Favre finally calls it quits!!!
Only took 17 years!!
GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Brett Favre has decided to retire from the NFL after 17 seasons. FOX Sports first reported Tuesday that the Green Bay Packers quarterback informed the team in the last few days. ESPN.com said that according to Favre's agent the quarterback told coach Mike McCarthy of his decision. Only two years removed from perhaps his worst season, Favre had a resurgence in 2007. He broke several career records. Among them was Dan Marino's career mark for career touchdown passes. He powered the Packers to an NFC North title and a 13-3 regular-season record. He was named to his ninth Pro Bowl. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/200...x.html?cnn=yes |
That sucks! :(
|
Part of me is just glad that he finally made up his mind. The local news (Milwaukee) has been completely dominated by people trying to predict whether or not he would retire. 4 out of 5 nights a week it has been a feature story. For the past 3 years.

I won't believe it until week 2 of regular season. |
The NFL just got a little bit uglier.

No biggie - it happens to the best of us. |
Technically speaking...this thread was first..but I ain't sweating it...LOL...just goes to show my prediction was pretty darn close...but then even Ray Charles could have seen back in March that this fool was gonna come back....LOL

He isnt a fool, just someone who decided he wasnt quite ready for retirement! MANY football players change their minds after they retire and to call a 3 time MVP, superbowl QB, future Hall of Famer a fool is just ridiculous. |

And please......since you emphasized "Many"....please make a list....how many players at or near Favre's caliber contemplated retirement or actually retired only to come back? Hmmmm....let's take a running head start. Not Jerry Rice, nor John Elway....maybe Joe Montana. Trent Green needed one more concussed season to do him in.....Preist Holmes...nah...doesn't count. Vinnie T only did it out of need and no one else was available, not out of hubris.... Heck I thought for a moment a long time ago, someone could coax Rich Gannon out because after he left the Raiders SUCKED...and still suck.... Deion Sanders did it so you can put him on your list.... I will let you continue.... |
Ok maybe the word MANY is a little exagerated, but he certainly isnt the first nor will he be the last. Ted Thompson's arrival at Green Bay was when his indecision to play at the end of each season began. He and TT have never liked each other and Brett has never felt lke TT wanted him to stay on board. With that said... I am not going to go look for a list of names because I have only had one cup of coffee and I am not up for it... but I remember a list being posted on a different site by someone and I was shocked there were many pro athletes who do change their mind return to the sport with a different team... but dont forget Lombardi himself retired from the Packers only to return to coach another team, Reggie White retired and came back and so did Michael Jordan a couple of times (ok basketball not football but still) ...
|
Another Green Bay example--Reggie White. Retired and return a few seasons later to play for... the Titans?
This who Favre debacle is just.... ugh. They should have let him come back right away. But since they didn't, he should have been a big boy and buried the hatchet when he did have a chance to return. I mean, wasn't the point in returning to make it to one more Super Bowl? I guess I don't see the Jets as that kind of team (although improved, but not quite ready for prime time). Just a big ol mess--and as I true Green Bay fan, very disappointing. |

Let's 'tackle' theseone at a time

My whole point is this, Brett Favre is 'unique' because of what he put not just teh Packers thru these past few years but the entire NFL.... Plain and simple, if you are going to retire, sit out for a while and decide youthink you want to come back...fine. But if every year for 3, 4, 5 years no one knows what you are going to do up until training camp in July and August, then it's a hassle because your team still has no idea of how to proceed! Should I draft a QB this year? I dunno because we don't know what Favre is gonna do. Should I start grooming this guy to take Favre's place? I dunno...because we DON'T KNOW what Favre is gonna do until 1/2 past July... and think by the time Favre always tend to make up his mind, it's past the draft and any 1/2 way decent veteren QBs have been snapped up..... It's an inconvenience for him to do this each season. Again as stated before, when you mention Jordan and White...we aren't talking about guys who came out of retirement and inconveniencing a team. I said it before in earler posts...anyone worth his salt knew that Jordan was coming back. Reggie White came out due to need. and honestly the only other person whose unretirement caused controversy was Magic Johnson's.....for obvious reasons.... Quote:
I don't fault the Green Bay organization...please check out what I just wrote....Favre should have had his mind made up in March....either play or stay retired or immediately ask to go somewhere else. I have never been a Favre fan but you cannot doubt his ability...he can make a team good and I think he can get the Jets out of the rut that they have been in, but seriously, the man needs to make his mind up. |

there are very few players at or even near his caliber. |
Quote:
When someone of HIS CALIBER decides to leave and come back...it's not good for the person playing that position See Aaron Rodgers. Think: What if Joe Montana still wanted to play...well we saw what happened with that... What if John Elway still wanted to play and kept changing his mind? And so on....think of what may happen once Peyton starts getting close to ending his career...Colts are gonna have to groom someone other than Jim Sorgi Think about what happened in New England all those years ago with a then unknown 6th rounder named Brady came in and ran Drew Bledsoe out of town... When you have guys of that caliber that still wanna play...MAKE UP YOUR MIND. |

ok ... first it is hardly Brett Favre's fault that the "entire NFL" is effected by his inability to decide if he wants to retire or not during an off season and I defininatley think that is a total exageration on your part. The MEDIA may be obsessed by it but it doesnt effect the entire NFL. What difference does it make if he retires and changes his mind 4 months later or changes it 1, 2 or 3 seasons from now? He is almost 39 years old, he doesnt have time to sit it out for a year or more. He realized that this summer and decided that his days were numbered to play football and he decided not to let these last few hoorahs slip past him. As far as "should I draft a QB or not this year" TT took care of that years ago when he first wanted Brett to retire and has made it pretty clear at the end of every season that he doesnt really want Brett there anymore. Aaron has been there as #2 being groomed so that wasnt an issue. You can say that anyone worth his salt knew that Jordan was coming back, but I say that anyone worth their salt knew Brett Favre would be back. My husband laughed at him during his retirement speech and said he will be back by July. There is no way he is done. !/2 the people I talked to pretty much said the same thing. So whats the difference. oh and here is one list I googled, but there was a bigger one somewhere. oops sorry that was the wrong list ... I will try to find it later I have to give the dog a bath lol |
Quote:
cool...now we agree on exaggerations...heh! ok.... 1. He realized that a number of summers ago that he knew his days were numbered and the Pack should have traded him then...but no...somehow Favre managed to work his voodoo and stay there. 2. If you look at the beginning of this thread...remember I myself said he would be back...thus that point was pointless. 3. All of those players you listed with the exception of Favre DID NOT retire and come back....they got traded. Emmitt Smith - retired after Arizona opted to not pick him up Thurman Thomas retired due to injury Jerry Rice - bounced from the Niners...played in the Disaster Bowl (Super Bowl XXXVII) and lost to the Bucs....played a season with the Seahawks and since no one picked him up...also retired. Cris Carter and tim Brown - ditto...tried to get with other clubs but due to age...just didn't make the cut Tom Boselli retired due to injury... The last 3 guys aren't even in the same category as the above listed players and no where near Favre.... that list is a list of players and how thier careers ended....you were doing better when you had Reggie White on that list....but still not in the same ballpark with favre and his flip flopping. |
I know I deleted that list when I realized it was not from the same thread I read it on a few weeks ago. Sorry that was not the list I meant to fpost. Anyway, I stated there are few players at the level of play Brett is and of course I can not produce that sort of list because it is just impossible, but many pro athletes do retire and change their mind to come back.

so ....I will retire from this line of conversation and elect to exercise the right to unretire myself should this thread gets more interesting) |
lol I will look for the list.
If you were a Favre fan you would feel passionately about this too, but admittedly you cant stand the man, so you wouldnt see his side of things. People either love him or hate him, I havent met many who could care less, except my mother. |
Quote:
Try this... If these guys did the same thing....there would be similar blow back 1. Michael Strahan 2. Tiki Barber 3. Steve McNair ( and some of us Ravens fans are kind of hot about this because he waited so late!) especially if he still expected to start. ETA: it's not many players that retire at the top of their game and have the option to come back because they STILL got game...therefore when you have players like Favre who never seem to quit....it's a circus. |
Quote:
The team has to draw up two contingency plans, sure - one with Favre and one without. That is not exactly rocket science. All the cap issues are the same, there isn't any real downside (two NFL-caliber starters is a "problem" anyone would love to have), and the team had every opportunity to sign a new starter to take his place and make the whole thing moot from 2004 to today. His teammates don't care - see Al Harris's "I'm a captain, and I speak for the team - we'd welcome him back with open arms" speech - and the "media circus" lasts, what, 3 weeks during training camp? Seriously. Camp. Not even the voluntary offseason activities, that are way more important for implementing a system. Add to this the exceptional amount of money and prestige that Favre has brought to the organization, and the front office comes out WAY on top in this deal, regardless of the "will he/won't he" thing. Indeed, the same thing that made him a great quarterback makes it hard for him to retire. |

So yeah - is the "circus" worth FIVE wins? |
It would have been worth it 3 or 4 years ago.....think about it....how many playoffs and Super Bowls has Favre gotten them to every since the R word started getting tossed around? If Last season was like the 06 season, we wouldn't be having this discussion right now.
Since their last Super Bowl in 97...... 5 or 6 playoff appearances and MOST of those are Wild Card wins..... |

We'll see how "wise" they are when they finish the season 4-12 hahahaha sorry I havent had a chance to do any digging for that list, but whatever, you retired from this thread right hahaha or have you unretired again? |
Quote:
Hey...better to go 4 - 12 w/o favre than that have a disgruntled favre and do the same. |

Favre is an aging, somewhat overrated but still Hall of Fame-caliber QB, while Aaron Rogers has put up middling (and largely meaningless) numbers when he's worn his helmet. Unless you think getting those snaps would have reversed Aaron Rogers' fortunes (which even the GB front office seemed to disagree with up until this season), I simply can't imagine what argument you're really trying to make. There is probably a <10% chance that Aaron Rogers EVER has a season like Favre's 2007, not to mention the 4000 yd/30 TD season he put up in 2004, when you think he should have retired the first time. Green Bay is clearly building for a Favre-less future - but they're so convinced that Aaron Rogers will lead that future that they drafted Brian Brohm just a couple of months ago. This is only a detriment for the FO because they made it one themselves - putting this on Favre is short-sighted and foolish. |
Quote:
Ksig...no rookie since Dan Marino has ever put up numbers like he did..so we agree on that... I dont think Favre is overrated BTW....he is just a big flip flopper....and no...drafting another QB was brilliant....they are doing what u just said they did...they were planning for No Favre...meaning...they are bringing Rodgers up and protecting their season...however, they still need a veteran presence on the team....who knows...Duante Culpepper still needs a job....heh! |
