gray or grey?

So all the bickering threads lately invariably seemed to mention a "gray/ey area" here or there. I noticed how many people used the "-ey" spelling and since I don't feel like even looking at the "heavier" threads right now I thought I'd start a totally simple one.

Do you spell the color g-r-a-y or g-r-e-y?

I'm an "a" girl myself. Gray.

DeltAlum 03-03-2008 10:28 PM

Usually gray, but sometimes the other when I'm feeling...well, like spelling it grey.

DSTCHAOS 03-03-2008 10:31 PM

Random Thread kinda thought or its own thread? THAT is the question.

nittanyalum 03-03-2008 10:34 PM

I didn't think having a ton (or, ok, 2) of "gray" or "grey" posts would be all that welcome in a random thread. Thus, its own.

And a gray one, too.

ComradesTrue 03-03-2008 10:47 PM

sorry, off topic:
how about getting the rhyming thread up and running again? It can bring happiness and harmony in these difficult GC times :)

Now...back to the important issue at hand...

grey

SWTXBelle 03-03-2008 10:50 PM

grey

Scully 03-03-2008 10:56 PM

Does the difference have to do with British vs. American spelling of the word? I'm still unsure, but Crayola uses "gray" so I will use "gray."

I was debating with myself about that. Myself decided it was more grey than gray. Ionknow why.

"Grey" is supposedly used primarily in UK English and "Gray" is supposedly used primarily in US English.

Woohoo.

SoCalGirl 03-03-2008 11:17 PM

I always thought gray is a color and Grey is a name.

texas*princess 03-03-2008 11:17 PM

I typically write it with an 'e'....

i'm pretty sure i've typed it with an 'a' before, but I think i normally use 'e' :p

Gray and Grey are names. :)

These unfortunate people's parents have just used variants of the same adjective/noun/verb.

KatieKate1244 03-03-2008 11:51 PM

I use it both ways. Just depends on the situation I'm using it in. I think "grey" is more formal.

honeychile 03-04-2008 12:06 AM

I've always used "grey" - I think as a holdover from the Little Grey Rabbit books and other English children's books. "Gray" seems just... odd.

Senusret I 03-04-2008 12:39 AM

I'm ambigreaydextrous.

I literally have used both and consider both to be correct. When I was teaching, I let kids spell it whichever way worked.

LOL. 'xactly.

And to be honest, I'm really surprised at the overwhelming majority of "grey" answers. I don't think I've ever in my life spelled it that way.

ForeverRoses 03-04-2008 02:30 PM

Gray for the color.

Grey for a mood/type of day and the TV Show.

SATX*APhi 03-04-2008 02:43 PM

AlethiaSi 03-04-2008 07:36 PM
