Yayyy! I'm so glad our mascot inspired an entire thread! There was an argument years ago about whether it should be a sea lion or a banana slug. I'm glad the banana slug triumphed. No know predators, baby!

ComradesTrue 02-29-2008 04:13 PM

It's no banana slug, but how about Texas Christian University's Horned Frogs...

Slugs disgust me which means I had to look up why your school chose this unofficial mascot. Now it all makes sense but slugs are still gross. :)

NutBrnHair 02-29-2008 04:43 PM

Really?

I can't find any images, but Centre College used to be the "Prayin' Colonels". Now their just the "Colonels".

Campbell University is the "Camels".

And, let's go ahead and bring it up: The Rhode Island School of Design Nads.
"Let's go, Nads, let's go."

ForeverRoses 02-29-2008 05:47 PM

I always though the University of Akron Zips was a funny name!

OK, not a college, but I kinda liked it in high school... There's a school in Tennessee called The Webb School. And they are totally the Webb Feet. LOVE IT! Especially since they had large feet/tennis shoes painted all over the walls of their gym (at least the last time I played a high school basketball game against them there!).

NutBrnHair 02-29-2008 05:54 PM

High School Nicknames are fun too!

I'm an alumna of an all girls' school with the colors BLACK and BLUE.

We're the BRUISERS!

Yes, the Carnegie Mellon Mascot is a piece of fabric, ie the Tartan.

I've always liked MIT's Beavers since they are nature's engineers.

That's Joe Vandal our mascot, with our I logo. I'll edit later with the explanation why we're Vandals, not Vikings.

It's another high school, but my favorite is the Poca, WV,

Pepperdine Waves (and mascot Willie the Wave...who everyone knows is laughable)

The Banana Slugs are also my favorite, but the other one I like is...

The UC Irvine Anteaters.

SoCalGirl 02-29-2008 10:30 PM

I've seen it referred to as the official and the unofficial mascot.

Nickname Origination
Given UC San Diego’s close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and its connections with the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the nickname of the Tritons became an appropriate one in 1964. The Triton is described as the son of Poseidon and Amphitrite who is a demigod of the sea with lower part of the body like that of a fish. It is known as a mighty and fierce sea warrior.
Quote:

UCSD's unofficial school mascot is the Triton. According to Greek mythology, a Triton is a merman, and the demigod of the sea. He is represented as human down to his waist, with the tail of a fish, and equipped with a "trident"-- a three-pronged spear.

The only logo they use seems to be their monogram:

but we can't forget the Presbyterian College Blue Hose!

From the gozips website:

One of the unique nicknames in all of intercollegiate athletics belongs to The University of Akron.

Originally Zippers, athletic director Kenneth Red Cochrane officially shortened the nickname to the Zips in 1950. Twenty-five years earlier a campus-wide contest had been conducted to choose a nickname for the University's athletic teams.

Suggestions submitted by students, faculty, and alumni included Golden Blue Devils, Tip Toppers, Rubbernecks, Hillbillies, Kangaroos, and Cheveliers. The winner, freshman Margaret Hamlin, received a prize of $10 for Zippers - a $6 pair of rubber overshoes and a brand name of the BF Goodrich Company.

Go Hose! That is the official logo, but we've started using a highlander (think Braveheart).

When the 2000 census rolled around, we made T-shirts for the occasion. On the front was our logo with "2000 Census" around it. On the back, it said: "How many Hose does Clinton have?" (ICYDK, Clinton is the city that PC is in). Oh, the double entendre!

LOL! I love it.

The husband's school's athletic teams are the Rose-Hulman Fightin' Engineers. They use Rosie the Elephant as their mascot.
http://i30.tinypic.com/a1ob46.jpg

Sometimes they just use the "R" without the elephant and sometimes they use a stylized "angry" elephant:
