whats up with the male wearing our letters?

Hey sorors, I could not find this posted on GC so if someone else has already posted this then please disregard. The message boards have been lit up with sorors who posted about Randy Jackson's dance show on MTV. On the last show, there was a dance crew competing called In Live Color who wore blue n gold (not an issue) but one of the males in the crew wore our letters with the Rho letter bottom half torn off. What in the world? This young man attends an HBCU so ignorance is not an excuse. I am trying to wrap my head around why he would wear our letters? Is he making a statement that he wants to be a member? What in the world is up with that? What are your thoughts? Here is a link to the show. You can see their performance after about the first 4 minutes in the video.

Crashing but gotta say it doesn't even begin to make sense.

wooooooow

DSTCHAOS 02-23-2008 07:29 PM

Yeah we typed about it in the Random Thread.

It sucks but I was extremely shocked and interestingly humored. Can't be too mad at dude because an SGRho may've given him the letters.

I remember years ago this dude showed up at a Delta party with a Delta shirt on--his sister or gf gave it to him so he could get in free with letters.

Still BLUTANG 02-23-2008 10:13 PM

i don't know whats going on in the video (i'll click to view and come back), but i do know that there is a KKPsi brother competing. HBCU chapters add gold to our official colors of blue & white.

IncontRHOllable 02-25-2008 01:52 AM

The young man is a member of KKPsi, so that makes it even worse that he would wear sorority letters.. I have read a so-called letter of apology that reeked of rudeness from this young man. I am still baffled

Still BLUTANG 02-25-2008 03:06 PM

watched and all i can say is WOW! what in the world?

Was it posted on MTV website or was it just sent to you all?

The Grand Basileus, HQ and all Syntakti are very much aware of the situation and the matter is being viewed by legal counsel.
The situation is being handled.

GRACED2BSGRHO 02-25-2008 06:07 PM

My sister asked me about the night it aired. I thought she was joking. I have no idea why would do it or even think it would be acceptable. Not cool at all. I don't know if i should be offended or just say oh well.

NinjaPoodle 02-25-2008 06:17 PM

Personally, I was offended. If the guy was not greek, then whatever, but he reportedly is a KKPsi. He knew better. If he had no choice in the matter as to wearing the article of clothing (as he claimed), since he was wearing a jacket, he could have turned the shirt around and had the letters on his back, which would have been covered by the jacket. MTV always blocks out greek letters. Why didnt they do that this time?

To me his excuse is a cop out.

DSTCHAOS 02-25-2008 06:35 PM

MTV doesn't always block out Greek letters.

In this case, they were obviously Greek letters to us but some people may've thought they weren't--especially since he shortened the "P."

I don't watch MTV but I do know that they cannot aire trademark letters without the permission of the org. Most folk in greekdom recognized it immediately. Of course if you are unaware or outside of greekdom, you wouldn't know but that's just it, he is in a fraternity so he knew. It just baffles me that he would even put on those letters for TV. I would have been embarrassed and scarred to run on stage with A Phi A letters on with the last A shortened. So disrespectful...Oh well, its being handled so let me quit thinking about it.

Of course he knew.

I was talking about the MTV viewers who don't know Greek letters when they see them.

rhoyaltempest 02-26-2008 08:43 PM

I was watching the show when it first aired and I couldn't even enjoy the performance because I was too busy trying to see what the third letter was until I realized it was a cut off rho. I'm glad that HQ is looking into though. It may seem small to some but we definitely don't want non-greeks (those who didn't attend college and have no clue) thinking it's okay to sport greek nalia and especially in the media.

I would like to read that letter of apology-CUZ right now I would rather just go whoop his ass:mad:

NappyBison 02-28-2008 08:17 PM

For shame

I remeber seeing this episode and wondering if what I was seeing was correct. Now this post confirms it. As a non-greek I didn't understand the whole "cut-off" Rho on the shirt, so I was extremely confused as I watched him dance all over the place  Seems very irresponsible for someone who is supposed to be well-versed in Greek culture, to do something so blatantly disprespectful like this.

likeaTREE 02-29-2008 12:12 AM

The group in question, live in color, went home tonight...

SGRho wins!!! :p

I didn't like them that much, anyway, and that letters thing distracted me and annoyed me when I saw it.

Speaking for myself, I actually was surprised that they went home. I did not vote for anyone because voting to me is a waste of time for shows like this. My theory is the winner is always predetermined so votes don't count, therefore why waste your time and vote. MTV is the party responsible for the misuse of our letters. I was only interested in why that guy would wear the letters especially since he is in a fraternity.

jojapeach 03-02-2008 06:01 PM

I was watching out of curiosity, and they did an okay job that night. when they lost, I instantly thought, "I bet y'all know now not to mess with Sigma Gamma Rho...." But it really was all about MTV's gaffe, not the group.

In a fraternity at FAMU no less. He explained very well why he did it (the classic "They [MTV] made me do it!"), but that last part of that letter was disrespectful which discredited the letter entirely.

canuhandleit 03-02-2008 11:49 PM

Now he knew better. That is so disrepsectful! I know it's old, but I am giving him the gas face!

I really want to read this letter *looking crazy*....lol. How could MTV make him wear that shirt??? I will say that I was a bit surprised when they went home though...they may not be the greatest but they are a better dance group that a couple of those that are still on. Oh well...

Handskillz 03-05-2008 09:58 AM

I saw that last week, I believe and as my friend and I were watching it, I said "WTF???....Is that guy wearing Sigma Gamma Rho letters and why is the "P" cut off?" I knew this was going to start controversy. That is extremely disrespectful; even moreso that only half of the "Rho" is visible. =\

Educatingblue 03-09-2008 01:28 PM

I guess he thought he was going to try and tie in the greek thing with his intro. Either way it just made him look stupid. If he knows what I know he is going to have hell to pay when he gets back to the yard!!! :D
