Baseball Trivia!!!

I will start with the first question. Which team had the worst record ever for a single season? Hint: the team plays in a city that has a baseball team now, yet the answer is a team that went defunct years back.

Thrillhouse 07-20-2001 10:42 AM

Sorry, good guesses though

newbie 07-20-2001 02:12 PM

Good question!!

VERY wild guesses...

Seattle Pilots, or
Houston Colt 45s, or
Los Angeles Angels?????????????????????

Have no clue whatsoever...

newbie 07-20-2001 02:18 PM

Here's another question!

Which Hall of Fame pitcher managed to win 266 games despite missing nearly 4 seasons due to service in WWII?

newbie 07-20-2001 02:48 PM

I think this is an interesting piece of trivia:

Which World Series (year and teams please) was notorious for having "monster crowds," so much so that "18,801 with as many as 10,000 fans were reported to have been turned away. Gate receipts from the eight games totaled just over $100,000 with the winning ABC team players taking home $1,182 each while the losers received even more - $1,316.25 - thanks to team owner Mr. Stone (I took out the real name), who contributed his entire share into the pool.

It was the only time in World Series history that the losers took home more than the winners."

Hint: This World Series was a best-of-9 series...

Second Hint: Best-of-9 series were utilized only through the years of 1903-04, and then 1919-21.

Yes...I'm bored http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif! Procrastinating so I don't have to study http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif! www.mlb.com is a great place for trivia...

Newbie, is the answer to the first question Hal Newhouser? I have no idea about the second one.

Thrillhouse 07-23-2001 12:28 AM

hey is the second one Boston red sox?

The answer to my question is the Cleveland Spiders who went 20-134 in 1899.

Next question. Who holds the record for most saves in a single season?

That's Bobby Thigpen, with 57 . . . I still have the rookie card, which i snagged early in that season, thinking he'd get the record.

MY TURN!!!!

We've all heard the BS about Mike Hampton breaking the single-season home run record (for a pitcher), which currently stands at 11 . . . now, that's not entirely true - who holds the record for most HRs by someone who pitched at least 100 innings in a season? How many? (HINT: he was a left-handed pitcher who twice threw more than 300 innings in a season . . . )

KSig RC 07-23-2001 11:59 AM

OK - if you don't get the one above, here's a couple of general-knowledge ones to get us going:

Who holds the all time single-season records for:
-hits? how many?
-doubles? how many?
-triples? how many?
-total bases?
-most HRs given up?
-most wins in a season?
-most wins all-time? (easy)
-most losses all-time? (just as easy)

Some other interesting ones:

Who hit the "shot heard 'round the world"? Who threw it? What is the controversy surrounding the swing?

Who has the lowest OBP in the hall of fame?

Who holds the all-time record for lifetime BA?

ok more to come - Ex Greek can probably drop those back to me in about 5 seconds!

newbie 07-23-2001 04:59 PM

If I don't know the answer to that one, I wouldn't be a true Giants fan - the shot heard around the world was hit by Bobby Thomson...he was a NY Giant...and his HR in the bottom of the 9th inning of the rubber-match, 3 game playoffs between the Brooklyn-hated-Dodgers won the NL Pennant for the Giants in 1951!!!!!!!!!

One of the reasons why this was such an important moment in baseball history is b/c it draws attention to that time in baseball where there were 3 teams in one city - NY Giants, Brooklyn Dodgers, and of course the Yanks. That was the "golden era" for baseball in NY, since the Yanks were pretty much there at the end of the season, and usually the Giants or Dodgers were in the playoffs at the end of the season too.

Another reason why this was so big, is b/c we were something like 12 1/2 or 13 1/2 games out by August, and the Dodgers came to play us and swept 3 games from us, giving them some damn record against us, like 12-3 or something (sorry I'm getting rusty here). Then after that, the Dodgers all sang , "the giants are dead, the giants are dead," all so the giants clubhouse (which was next door) could all hear.

Then, OF COURSE http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif, my giants started going on a tremendous run where we hardly lost...then we found us facing the hated Dodgers for the NL pennant. the controversy, Rob, was about the stealing of signs, which supposedly the giants did...

Branca was the losing Dodger pitcher.

The Shot around the World proved how great baseball was back then...the passion the fans and players BOTH had for the game. And of course, it's the greatest moment in history b/c the DODGERS WENT DOWN to the hands of the GIANTS!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Always a great day in Giant-land when the Dodgers go down, especially if it's b/c of us.

Alright, now back to studying...

ExGreek, answer to my first question was Bob Feller..which i already told you though in IM. Second question's answer was Boston Pilgrims...they were playing against the Pittsburgh Pirates. year: 1903.

Is it babe ruth? I know he pitched for awhile with the red sox.

Thrillhouse 07-24-2001 12:12 AM

Another question. A level 3 one http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Which team had the worst record in the 90's?

Also, which batter had the highest batting average in the 90's and what was his average?

Dynamite drop-in - it is George Herman Ruth. In 1919 he hit 27 home runs, and pitched 166 innings for the red sox. Then he was sold for $100,000 to fund a broadway show, representing history's darkest day.

Ruth, it turns out, was a dominant left-hander, maybe even the best lefty in the not-koufax catagory . . . but alas that bastard could hit too well to let him pitch and wear himself out. I guess.

Worst overall record in the 90's, or single-season? hmmm . . . i'll go with the pirates overall (b/c i really don't know - it's hard to remember teams' finishes other than playoff teams before 94 for some reason, maybe drinking), and the worst record in a single season? well . . . i think the last team to lose 100 games was the Orioles in like 92, so I'll go with them.

Again - single-season or decade-long? For single-season, well i was going with Nomar and Helton at .377 but that was in 2000, so . . . how about Tony Gwynn at .374 or whatever he hit the season he was over .400 in august? And overall i'll go with Tony Gwynn, who has the highest overall active lifetime average.

Those are good questions - i'm bad at those sort of "in this decade . . . " when it comes to more modern times. Haha - i might actually be better in the '30s or '20s catagories!

KSig RC 07-24-2001 01:15 AM

Here's tonite's entry (sorry for like 3 in a row . . . bad call Rob . . . ) -

Which 3 active players have won the Rookie of the Year and MVP awards?

We'll call this one level 3, maybe 4 . . .

yay, i think i actually know this one! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

1) Cal Ripken
2) Jose Canseco (how is he doing BTW)
3) Jeff Bagwell

now another question - Giants related http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif :

Who hit that famous HR in the 12th inning in September 1997 (the year of "Dustiny"), vs. the Dodgers, to pull the Giants and Dodgers into a tie for 1st place in the NL West??? That game basiclaly clinched the NL West title for the Giants. The game, where the Giants and Dodgers both played a seesaw game, where the Dodgers had a chance in the 10th to win it all, with bases loaded and No outs...

That HR is so special in Giants history, that Freeway 101-riders supposedly felt that an earthquake had hit SF, since ppl at the Stick erupted! It is also said to be one of the most momentous HRs in giants history, right up there with the Shot heard round the world.

Damn dude, I meant ty cobb on the .367, what the hell was I thinking? THe etam with the worst record in the 90's was actually the tigers. And right on about gwynn, he ended up with a .394 batting average that year.

a. Manny Ramirez
b. Roberto Alomar
c. Troy Glaus
d. Dean Palmer
e. Magglio Ordonez
f. Jason Giambi

Sorry, this may sound dumb - but what is the Silver Slugger award? Does the NL have that, too? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif

I'll take a wild guess...Dean Palmer?

Hey Hootie - Sorry about that; actually, Newbie did a great little bit about it earlier - it was hit by Bobby Thompson in the 3rd game of a cross-town playoff for entry into the world series. He hit a game-winning homerun to cap off a rally in the bottom of the 9th, off of Ralph Branca. The controversy is that he probably stole the sign, so he knew a fastball was coming - Newbie fills in the gaps about why it's the Shot Heard 'Round the World (historical importance et al.

Hey, not that dumb - not a popular award w/ the media. Silver Sluggers are given out to one player at each position, in each league - it's the hitting analog of a gold glove, and is given based on production in the triple-crown catagories and OPS (essentially).

Alas, that is the essence of this sort of 'trick' question - the players have to be the top hitter at their position, in their league. Thus, the answer is JASON GIAMBI, who of course puts of great numbers, but is still annually behind the great Carlos Delgado, the winner the last two years. Giambi's never won one - but Alomar and Palmer have, by out-slugging weak competition at their position.

-----NEW QUESTION------

Name the last player in each league to hit TWO grand slams in a single game. What was so special about the NL player's feat?

Thrillhouse 07-25-2001 04:32 AM

Hey newbie, the arrow thingie is a new trend http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Anways ksigrc, the NL answer is Mark Whiten. The significance was he tied the all time single game marks for hr's-4 and rbi-12.

[This message has been edited by Ex greek (edited July 25, 2001).]

Thrillhouse 07-25-2001 01:43 PM

The answer to the question of the last tiger stadium home run was Robert Fick.

Actually . . . Whiten only hit one grand slam, i think - either way, it's been done in both leagues since then (and that was a great guess - i'd totally forgotten about that).

NL - Fernando Vina - significant b/c he hit both in ONE INNING, in '99.

AL - Nomar Garciaparra, in '99.

Interesting move, b/c gomes and J.T. snow have had a very intersting history between them (lots of fights between them), but that should be past them, since it was about 3 or 4 years ago! Hopefully all goes well for the Giants and Gomes/Snow http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif! And we just won 9-5 over Arizona! So, at least a split.... I'm hoping for a SWEEP though!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif
