Curly Hair

okay well i love posting new topics and i love it even more when it gets a lot of responses. Hopefully this one will, well atleast from everyone with curly hair. Like i think i have said before, i have curly hair but its not really really curly like some people, Allie- you have the REALLY curly hair right? Anyway, it is so hard to manage on foggy/rainy days!! Does anyone have any suggestions or products they have used that seem to work? I have tried a ton of products. There is this one by Frizz-Ease called secret weapon and it works alright. In a couple of hours my little baby hair frizzies are back up! Also, what types of things do ya'll put in your hair. I have to put mousse on, and then let it air dry. Thats why i wash my hair at night, so the next day its not dripping wet. Therefore, i take two showers a day. One in the morning to "wake" me up and then one at night to wash my hair.

About two summers ago i went to the salon to get it professionally straighten and it actually worked out great. I loved it, but i havent done it again. After my hair grew out i would blow dry it straight but then it wouldnt be as straight and it also got really dry. Now i have learned to accept my hair the way it is! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Okay so come on- lets hear from you curly haired gals and guys!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Well since i am unfortunately addicted to Temptation Island, i need to go and watch the season finale.

amycat412 02-28-2001 10:09 PM

Ok. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I too don't have super curly hair, but its curly enough. And on top of it, its long and ridiculously thick, so..lots to deal with.

For Curly days I use:
KMS or Rusk Mousse. (I prefer KMS tho both good)
Sorbie Curl Form
For lots of curls I blow dry with a diffuser--makes the curls smaller, curlier, more defined.
For looser curls, I leave in a towel for 20 minutes and then mousse and sorbie it, blow it dry for like 3 minutes and let it air dry the rest of the way.

For Straight Days:
Redken Glass and a COnair straigtener/steamer with comb attachment that you can get at target/walmart for $20.
When I am done my hair is as straight as Lucy Liu's. -- I've tried every combination of product to get it straight and frizz free and its this $10 bottle of Redken Glass that works like a wonder drug.

But by far the best thing I've done for my hair and the way it looks is to STOP washing it everyday. It goes under the water for a rinse and condition everyday, but I only shampoo it every other day. This has made the texture and hold of it, whether curly or straight 1000% better. I used to think I could never do this, that I HAD to shampoo everyday, but its just so much better since I stopped!!!

whew. Ok that's Amy's Hair Care Regimen. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ha ha LOL.

Oh my gosh - I could teach a class on the woes of curly hair. Yes, I have the dread-lock curly hair. This is what I do to it in the morning. After I wash it I brush it and then shake my head really hard to let it fall naturally. Then I put Friz Ease, then Mousse (alcohol free) on and hang my head upside down to blowdry. Never let it blowdry all the way. Then I go put on my makeup and stuff. Then right as I am heading out the door, I put on a gel - Tigi Bed Head Friz Control (I think - it is green and smells like apples) - lightly over the top layer to smooth down all the flyaways.

To give you an idea at to the curlyness of my hair - when it is curly it is at my shoulders. When it is straight, it comes to the middle/bottom of my shoulder blades.

People with curly hair usually have very very very dry hair, so it is best to wash every other day. I can't do that though, so to make up for it I get a really deep deep, super deep conditioner and one of those clear plastic hair cover things. I put a ton of the conditioner on my head then the cover thingie and then heat it with a blow dryer for like 20 minutes. It is the same thing as a deep conditioning treatment at a salon. I do that about every 1 1/2 to 2 weeks, and that helps a lot. I usually give myself a pamper day - I do all the little beauty maintainance things that we ladies do - you know what I mean, we don't have to share all our female secrets. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

One more suggestion - avoid dying curly hair. Yep, I made that mistake. It dries hair out even more!

On top of everything else, my hair is really thing - and dark red! So, with the thickness, you can imagine the bushiness. And red hair eliminated so many colors from my wardrobe. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

Anyway, hope y'all can use some of what I said!

And by the way, Lucy Lui is a Chi O! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I do dye my hair and if its done right with the right products (the goddess who does my hair uses redken--rocket red, Allie. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif ) it can actually be not bad for the hair. But its all in the product and the way its done.

My hairdresser has curly hair--to me that was the key, she knows how to handle curly hair.

a couple of years ago i thought i had dandruff, but then when i went to the dermatologist he said i have dry scalp and it is really bad to wash my hair everyday. so now i wash it every other day.

last summer i got highlights and they were sooo great, but that was when i wore my hair straight. i want to go back and get them this year but i dont want her to brush my hair out when she puts my hair in foils since that will cause major POOF!! anyway- i guess she'll know what to do!

its so great to hear all these tips for curly hair!!

Ahhhh. I have wavy hair that just frizzes, and it sucks cause I live in one of the rainiest areas. However I have found something to tame my hair - the TIGI Bed Head Control Freak Line: I use their shampoo, conditioner, straightner - it works sooo well. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif

Since no other guys are going to post, I thought that I would...

I have thick curly and wavy hair... but I generally keep it short short short so that I don't have to worry about it http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
BUT, I have to get it cut every week 'cause when it starts to grow out, I get the "BRADY BUNCH" poofy hair... you know, the BIG guy hair thing that was "in" back in the day.

Recently I started going to this all guys salon... not a barber, but a salon. Well this guy who is cutting my hair now is having me grow it out a little bit (I guess the military cut isn't in anymore or something) so I have to use Bed Head super goo (I forgot the actual name) to control it... and now I have all this crazy hair sticking up all over my head... I don't know if it looks good or not, I'm just trusting the hair guy...

gphi2k 03-01-2001 11:20 AM

It's soooo nice to be able to commiserate with fellow curly hair people. I was a frizz ball in high school until someone introduced me to mousse. I too have very curly hair. And I'm not here to offer assistance in how to handle it.

But I do have a question to my fellow curly posters. Do you guys wanna hurt people who have straight hair to complain they want curly hair? I have to explain over and over that curly makes me crazy and that they don't realize how easy they have it with their low mainenance hair. Got straight hair? Is it messy? Brush it. Cause you can. Got curly hair? Is it messy? Did you make the mistake of going to sleep on your hair? You have one of two choices, shower or pony tail. That's it. You brush out your hair if it's curly and side ways through doorways must you go. So take it from me and anyone else with curly hair, it's cute, and yes, it can be fun. But the high maintenance style of the curls can get pretty gosh darned annoying! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

Billy - Thanks!!

I will never understand people who dye their hair red, but I know guys who love it! As for dying in general, my hair breaks easily - very easily - so that may be most of the problem.

What I hate is when people ask me, "Did you perm your hair?" Right - I would pay someone to make my hair look like this?!?!?! Hi, Ms./Mr. Hairdress I want to look like Carrot Top. Yea - OK.

My darling brother has curly hair. My parents didn't cut his hair until he was three years old (I was only seven but already complaining about his future psychological trauma by the time they cut it) and it make me so mad. It dried naturally into perfect Shirly Temple ringlets!!! And he's blond. It would suck when strangers would come up and say "oh, what a pretty little girl" to Matthew and my parents would say - "he's a boy, we just haven't gotten around to cutting his hair."

I guess the grass is greener on the other side, so to speak. I want straight hair, and other people want curly hair. I think if they knew what a pain curly hair was they wouldn't be so happy with it.

Oh, I meant to say this earlier - I did the whole permanent straightener thing too. It lastes three days! And the everything was all back. So that was $$$ down the drain.

OK, I'm having issues with my hair. There must be some reason for this mess. I just am not quite sure yet.

hey Allie--

http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I dye my hair red... It was red when I was little --gold red and got black as I got older--very odd on someone with the coloring for red/gold hair. So now its red, but a dark auburn red and I love it.

Also can't beat the 2-3 days of relaxed curls after its dyed. LOL.

I agree Leslie! I wake up after sleeping on my curls and its like insta-dreadlocks...which explains the ponytail I'm sporting today! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Don't you love it when straight haired people look at your messy mop of curls and quite seriously say 'why don't you try brushing it sometime?' aaaarrrgghhh my aunt does this all the time, drives me freaking nuts!

bucutie02 03-02-2001 09:45 AM

my best friend has thin straight hair, she is always telling me how she loves my hair and wishes hers was the same! i always tell HER that i wish i had hers since all she does is wash it, blow dries for like 2 minutes and goes! she could even just wash and go and it would dry on its own. She doesnt have to worry about frizzies, or it poofing out! seriously, straight haired people have it sooo easy compared to us!

My mom is always telling me to brush my hair out, and i always tell her that that isnt possible with curly hair. we always get in an argument like that, and then in comes my dad agreeing with her that i should brush my hair!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/rolleyes.gif

even though having curly hair is a pain sometimes, i think that if styled right, it looks pretty and not boring or plain http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Billy is my HERO!! Just wanted to say that.

I totally forgot about metioning the brutality of post-shower curly hair dealings. No such thing as wash and go. It's wash mousse, go do something for a bit, go back to mirror, locate frizzies, water down, remousse, and redo process until forced to leave the house. Frizz is EVIL. EVIL I TELL YOU!!!
And as for the whole red thing...I have very fair skin and green eyes, so I decided I was born to be a red head. I dyed it (natural instincts) a couple of weeks ago and got compliaments left right and centre. I did wash out stuff cause I was nervous about how it would look but now that I've learned that red heads have more fun http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif , I think I'm gonna go permanent.

i just wanted to say that yesterday i bought some paul mitchell mousse and it works great! it defines more of my curls instead of lumping it all in one big thick curl. I hope you guys know what i mean! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

JulieBaby 03-06-2001 10:38 PM

I have Curly hair and I LOVE it. I wash it in the morning, us Redkin #7 or 8 (I don't remember) and any gel, then go about my day. In the evening all I do is use a little spray gel and my hair is still great.
My friends are so jealous cause they have to wash, blowdry, & curl their hair and then it's flat 20 min. later.
I've tried all kinds of gels, mousses, and goos. They're all pretty much the same. I can't blowdry mine though.
I've found that once you accept your curly hair and enjoy it, it cooperates much better.
Just let it do what it wants and work with that. Don't try to mold it into something else, then it will just frizz.

Chris_GAT 03-14-2001 06:22 AM

Hmmmmmmmmmmm.........curly hair. I hate it with a vengence. My hair grows out very rapidly with no respect to my self who is increasingly getting pissed of with the whole thing. Anyway I just pile on the jel and hope for the best....

Turtlegirl 04-15-2001 07:58 PM

Ok this thread is kinda old but I wanted to bring it up again. I have SUPER thick, wavy hair that goes just about 2 inches past my shoulders. I am beyond irritated with it because it is that pesky kind of in-between hair. It's not curly enough to gel it and scrunch it while its wet but its wavy enough that I have to blowdry/straighten it for about 30 minutes then hot-roll it. I have to roll it everyday (then it looks good - smooth with a slight curl at the ends). Anyway, I'm looking for an easier way to deal with it. I am considering getting a perm but ya'll don't seem to like having curly hair. Any ideas or suggestions?

HeidiHo 04-15-2001 10:06 PM

Turtlegirl- I have stick strait hair & get bored very fast. A few years ago I permed my hair rather than cut it or color it for the millionth time. I loved it curly. Maybe the difference was that it wasn't natural so I didn't have the frizz, but all I did was wash/wet it, gel it & scrunch. I tried blow drying w/ a diffuser once or twice but then it got frizzy. I used Fizz-Ease serum before towel drying & Back to Basics vanilla bean gel. I'm pretty risky with my hair & willing to try things so I say perm it!
Heidi

Turtlegirl 04-16-2001 01:08 AM

Thanks for the tip HeidiHo! I guess that was exactly what I was hoping to hear. I'm looking for an easy style and it seems like a perm is a way to go. I'll probably do it after school lets out for the summer. I'd still like to hear any other comments from anyone. Thanks! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Turtlegirl 05-27-2001 04:04 PM

Hey Heidho!
What kind of perm did you get (like spiral or soft etc.)? I think I am about ready to take the plunge but I'm not sure what kind to get. Thanks http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

orchid2 05-29-2001 12:37 AM

Well, my hair is VERY naturally curly. I have it cut in long layers because it looks like a bush if I cut it short! (I have pictures to prove it too!:razz http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I've been through the "frizz ease" and the "biolage" and nothing seems to work for me like herbal essence extra-hold mousse. It smells really good too! I never brush my hair when it's dry and never fully blow dry it (that causes frizzies!) The best way to go is to start the blowdrying at the roots. Never all at once though, usually I blow dry it a little and then put on makeup, then blow dry it again. The moisture will slide down to the tips and it dries a lot quicker!

aaahhh....just my $0.02 worth!

lindsay_iu 06-12-2001 01:54 AM

Has anyone tried Curl Vive by L'Oreal? If not, you should. I bought the shampoo and conditioner last week, and it's great. It smells good and it's super at detangling. My comb just slides through my hair now, and I don't have to tug at knots. Anyway...enough promoting for L'Oreal.

I also use Bed Head Control Freak serum. I love it because it's not sticky at all. I usually blowdry my hair until it's about halfway dry, and it works pretty well. I prefer to let my hair air-dry though, when I have the time.

Have any of you ever had your hair professionally straightened? I'm toying with the idea of straightening mine, but I'm scared that my curls will be in sad shape after. I need a magic wand for my hair, so I can have a huge variety of styles without commitment.

I never thought I would say this - but I'm bored of my hair TOO!!! It's getting pretty long right now, but I'm kinda sick of my hair - straight in one place, wavy in the other...what kind of perm did you get Heidi? And is it hard maintenance (i.e., do you have to re-touch the roots every few months, how costly is it, etc.)? I also heard that when you get a perm you have to buy a whole new set of hair care products. Do you have any that you would like to recommend?

I want loose waves, basically to balance out my straight-hair-here, wavy-hair-there!

Turtlegirl, did you end up perming your hair after all? And if so, which type of perm - and is it hard maintenance, which products did you end up using (basically the same questions that I had for Heidi)?

Sorry for so many questions, girls! Thanks for reading http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif!

L'Oreal CurlVive... I swear by it! I HATED to let my hair go curly before I discovered this stuff! It claims to reduce frizz by 95%... and at least in my case, this is totally true! Naturally, without any special products, I have the frizziest hair you have ever seen. Even though CurlVive works wonders for me, I still need help beyond that. I use Frizz-ease... 3 different products of theirs... hair serum (extra strength), styling gel, and relaxing cream. And I cannot blow dry my hair. The result? My hair is literally frizz-free.

Turtlegirl 07-22-2001 05:07 PM

Hey Newbie!
Yep I finally went for the perm! I got a spiral perm on large rods in early June and I love it!!! Like I said before, my hair is naturally wavy so I was always right there in the frizzy middle between straight and curly. Now I have pretty, loose spirals that I can straighten if I want to go for a different look (but it takes about 45 minutes). Actually, I even think my hair is in better condition since the perm because I don't use much heat to style it anymore (just a little bit of drying with a diffuser). I did buy new products after I went curly but they were all pretty cheap. I got the green Dep gel, Salon Selectives Loosely Defined (this is the best stuff in the world!!!) and Suave Shine gel. Oh and there is a great website with a message board about curly hair I go to all the time - its naturallycurly.com
Good Luck with your Hair!!!

Hi Turtlegirl!!!! GUess what, I'm going in for a perm today! Hopefully I'll like it http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif, I want to get loose waves (is that a body perm?). I have a feeling that my hair will be even more dammaged after the perm, since I usually don't blowdry my hair anyways! See, I color all the time, AND I swim! Yikes, hopefully I won't ruin my hair! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

Thanks for all your advice!!!! I'll keep you posted on how it goes - hopefully I'll have good news to report back to you in the next few days!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Wish me luck!

I have curly hair too, and it's pretty thick. I wash my hair every other day and straighten it pretty much every time I wash it with a blowdryer and iron. I had really pretty, straight hair when I was younger but around age 12-13 it frizzed and curled and generally became a mess.

I really don't know how to leave it curly so I just straighten it! But I am absolutely a pro at straightening. I've gotten it chemically straightened by a Korean stylist who was recommended by my piano teacher/good friend and it's maybe the best thing I ever did for my hair. The night before I was terrified that it would irreversibly damage my hair or that I'd go bald (in high school you hear all sorts of these things) but oh my god...I got it done and it was so soft and so miraculously straight! It lasted for three glorious months and I'm getting ready to schedule another appointment for a couple weeks before school starts http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Anyways just thought I'd share a hair success story.

newbie 07-25-2001 05:13 PM

Ahhh!!!!

So I finally got a soft perm, and while it looks really nice, my hair is as dry as STRAW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! HELP!! My stylist kept on commenting on how my hair was so dry, due to being overprocessed (I swim, plus I've dyed my hair countless times!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif ), so she used a really gentle perm.

Still, my hair feels like straw! What should i do?! Does anyone have any creams/leave-in conditioners that they can recommend to me??? I bought Sebastian Potion number 9 from a beauty employee's suggestion (that is a very popular product), but even that isn't working for me!!!!

I think the stronger the product, the better - my hair feels like it's gonna break soon! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

Thank you for any help that you can give to me - I will appreciate it so much!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I forgot to mention that my hair isn't as curly as yesterday (when I permed it), b/c it is very dry! The stylist told me that if it seems that my curls have sorta disappeared, it is b/c my hair is very dry. She said wetting the hair with water would help the curls spring back...but I'm wondering if products would get rid of the dryness?

HELP please! Thanks!!!

Turtlegirl 07-25-2001 11:24 PM

Whenever my hair is extra-dry, I condition it with plain old olive oil. Just wet your hair and coat it with olive oil, let it sit for like 20 minutes, then wash and condition as usual. Also, since your hair is curly now (congrats http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif ), try not to wash it everyday ( thats hard if you swim) just wet it and condition it but don't shampoo. That helps a lot with the dryness. Oh and I used to leave a little conditioner (regular not leave-in) in my hair but I find that if I use my SS Loosely Defined on top of conditioner, its too much and my hair gets all dull and waxy-feeling. Well thats it for my dryness tipsZ http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Good Luck!
