I'm getting horrific flashbacks of VT.

I haven't seen any reports of deaths, just those wounded. Any word on if our Greek brothers and sisters were among the wounded?

Sending lots of prayers to the NIU community. :(

CNN is now reporting 3 dead including shooter.
Reporting many head wounds.

Senusret I 02-14-2008 06:45 PM

My friend is okay. They locked down everything and moments ago told people they could go home. He is very traumatized by this. He was less than half a city block from the shooting.

shinerbock 02-14-2008 06:46 PM

Damn coward.

nittanyalum 02-14-2008 06:48 PM

I'm glad you're friend's ok, Senusret. And I'm glad the shooter bit the big one.

I'm praying for the other 2 known dead and their families and for the wounded. WTH is wrong with people?

EtaPhiZTA 02-14-2008 06:51 PM

I am so relieved -- we just got a text that my nephew, a freshman, is ok. He is planning to leave to come home for the week-end as soon as they lift the campus lock down

Shooting at NIU

http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/...shooting_N.htm

DEKALB, Ill. (AP) — A gunman who opened fire in a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University on Thursday, injuring several people and sending students screaming and fleeing, is dead, DeKalb Police Lt. Gary Spangler told the campus newspaper.
No further details were available about the gunman, although The (DeKalb) Daily Chronicle, citing information heard over a police scanner, earlier said that officers had been alerted to a white, male shooter with a shotgun and pistol.

"The gunman is deceased," Spangler told the student newspaper, The Northern Star.

"It has been confirmed that there has been a shooting on campus and several people have been taken away by ambulance," officials said in a message posted on the school's website.

University Police posted a message on the site by 4:14 p.m. saying the gunman was "no longer a threat" and "the immediate danger has passed."

Alpha Sig Scott 02-14-2008 07:05 PM

I'm listening to a radio interview right now with the on-line editor for the NIU Northern Star student newspaper. He's saying there are unconfirmed reports of a hostage situation that occured earlier today during the shootings. The gunman is now confirmed as dead.

KenUDiggit 02-14-2008 07:06 PM

My heart goes out to them.

Sister Havana 02-14-2008 07:30 PM

Sad and scary...

I have a lot of friends who went to NIU. Thoughts and prayers out to the whole NIU community, and to our Eta Chapter Alpha Phi Omega Brothers.

Scandia 02-14-2008 07:38 PM

It is almost as if there were an epidemic of shootings.

Or should I say pandemic? After all, there was a school shooting in Finland last year.

So sad.

RedRoseSAI 02-14-2008 07:54 PM

As a proud NIU alumna, this hits way too close to home. I had several classes in the lecture hall where the shooting occured. I can't believe this happened...

AKA_Monet 02-14-2008 08:05 PM

So sorry for the loved ones in that area...

There's at least one GC ADPi at NIU. Hopefully, she's not involved.

ETA: The one sister has graduated already (thank you, Lord!). There's another I haven't heard about yet, though. ThetaGirl218, your poor aunt must be horrified - as are we all!!

Aye, this is very distressing. I don't get a lot of news from back home over here, but this past week, I found out the guy who shot and killed 2 Robert Morris University students in PA about two weeks ago was a high school classmate and close acquaintance. :( :(

KSUViolet06 02-15-2008 03:37 AM

Tri Sigma has a chapter there (Beta Alpha). I hope they're all okay.

Scandia 02-15-2008 08:26 AM

What else is known about the shooter? Any particular motivation? Why would he target those particular students in that one classroom?

DaemonSeid 02-15-2008 09:29 AM

Scandia..still nothing yet, just the news still saying that he was a former grad student and that a 6th person has died this morning....tomorrow will be 10 months since the VT shooting sadly enough

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/23171942/
Another person shot when a gunman opened fire at a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University has died, bringing the toll to seven, including the gunman, a coroner said Friday.
Investigators and school officials did not immediately know why the man indiscriminately fired into the crowd with a shotgun and two handguns Thursday, wounding 15 people and sending panicked students fleeing for the exits before killing himself.

Sixth victim dies in Illinois college shooting
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A sixth victim of a shooting spree at an Illinois university has died after black-clad man fired into a lecture hall packed with students before killing himself, the DeKalb County Coroner's office said on Friday.
Classes were canceled after Thursday's shooting at Northern Illinois University, a 25,000-student school 65 miles west of Chicago.
The gunman, who police said was a former Northern Illinois student, had a shotgun and two handguns when he stepped onto the lecturer's stage near the end of an afternoon geology class and began shooting, witnesses said. Terrified and bleeding, students fled the hall before the gunman shot himself on the stage.

DEKALB, Ill — A former student dressed in black walked onto the stage of a lecture hall at Northern Illinois University and opened fire on a packed science class Thursday, killing six students, wounding 15 and setting off a panicked stampede before committing suicide, FOX News has confirmed.
Police say they have no motive for the rapid-fire assault, carried out by the gunman who fired indiscriminately into the crowd with a shotgun and two handguns as students dove to the floor and ran toward the exits.

Per new report I just saw you are correct-Pi Kappa Alpha

And judging solely on Nationals web site, SAE chapter was not directly impacted by the tragic events.

I just received an email confirming that the sister of a Sigma Lambda Beta Fraternity, Inc. member was also killed. I do not know if she is affilated with any of the sororities on campus. My thoughts and prayers out to the Garcia family and to all of the family members/friends of those lost yesterday. :(
