Help on shirt design

http://aycu25.webshots.com/image/448...1724558_rs.jpg

What should I put in the middle or should I maybe scrap the whole thing? The logo up top is going to be on the breast of the shirt and this is the back design.

I get that you're trying to do a "Corona" type theme, but do you really have to use Old English font? At first glance it was hard to read "FIJI".

Is there a trademark on the crown?

Islander is synonymous with us and no, there is no trademark because its not the actual crown from the corona logo.

knight_shadow 02-10-2008 04:32 AM

I agree with OTW - the font is very hard to read. Maybe a less scripty font?

As far as what to put in the middle, I'm not sure. Is this going to be a shirt for brothers only, or something passed out to attendees?

I know that. I was giving my feedback on the choice of font. It's easy to read the rest of the shirt in Old English, just not FIJI.

Xidelt 02-10-2008 05:56 AM

I like the shirt design, just not the font. Save the Old English font for gang-banger graffiti and prison tattoos.

AlphaFrog 02-10-2008 07:54 AM

Wait - weren't you the one that said that the nickname Fiji is gay and your chapter doesn't use it??

Other than that, I think the whole design is amazingly cliche and cheesy.

If you insist on it though (yes, I know you suggested above that you'd be willing to scrap it, but I have a feeling you'll come back and defend every crticism of it, which says otherwise)...as others have suggested - change the font. The only other thing you MIGHT add is either a palm tree or a lime. One or the other though, because ottherwise it's going to get cluttered.

Hahahaha!

But seriously...FIJI is hard to read.

PGD-GRAD 02-10-2008 12:34 PM

Islander shirt

PHI GAM,

First, some posters don't understand that nearly all Phi Gamma Delta chapters celebrate with a "FIJI ISLAND" event, whether they prefer to be knows as Phi Gams or Fijis. There are, geographically, FIJI ISLANDS; nobody ever heard of PHI GAM ISLANDS!

So--decide on something that is definitely in the tropical-island-hula-sand-palm tree theme. Corona is OK, but not as tropical as--say-- some kind of rum. Maybe you could tie in the lime that is always a part of the Conona experience? There are great Fiji Island shirts that have included palm trees, coconuts, hula girls, sunsets, outriggers, grass huts, etc. The play on "get lei'd" is clever and certainly works, but it has been used from coast to coast for years.

You have a good start--think outside the box a little and just play with your ideas. Bright colors are also typical of Fiji Island shirts. Good luck; you have a nice start. And the comments about the Cornoa font are correct--it is a little difficult to read.

nittanyalum 02-10-2008 02:40 PM

^^^This is exactly along the lines of my initial reaction. First, I heartily agree that both "FIJI" and "Everyone" are very difficult to decipher in that font.

But more importantly, I think Mexican when I think Corona. So if you're doing a "lei'd" thing, something more tropical (like rum) would be more apropos and "islandy". Maybe something with Captain Jack's rum (everyone can "get jacked"), or you could spin it off further to Captain Jack Sparrow and incorporate a Pirates of the Caribbean theme. That could offer all kinds of possibilities.

Benzgirl 02-10-2008 02:53 PM

Font looks like a pointy blob to me and the shirt will be "lost in translation" from people squinting. Lack of impact.

FSUZeta 02-10-2008 03:06 PM

font is difficult to read. capt. jack rum theme, pirates of the caribbean theme, "limin'"=chillin in the b.v.i.'s, tommy bahamas theme would all work well with fiji island theme.

you might google "pirate t-shirts" (there are hundreds of designs) for some inspiration-cafepress.com is one you might try. let us know what the final design looks like.

Yeah, yeah...I get it. It's usually gay unless it's convient for a party theme. Because all Greeks must have parties, and all parties must have themes. Swell.

Ilaria Ame 02-10-2008 04:11 PM

cosign on the font needing to be changed; it's REALLY difficult to read! do you have a font reading program? if so, try dafont.com for some really fun and different fonts.

Stef the Pef 02-10-2008 05:38 PM

Yes, change the font. There are less intricate old English-type scripts out there--you've just got to find them. Google "free font downloads" and see what you come up with.

Some cute (OK, maybe a bad word to use about a fraternity shirt, but oh well) graphics on the back would be cool. Maybe have a couple people sitting in chairs on the beach looking out over the ocean with leis hanging on their chairs (think Corona's commercials here) and then "Everyone gets lei'd / date" above them in the sky of the beach theme, and then frame the back graphics with a couple of palm trees.

Have fun with this. See if there's an artsy brother who'd want to help or if t-shirt company who's printing them has a graphic designer on staff. There are soooo many great graphics you could come up with that relate to the Corona theme there. As a girl, the more intricate fraternity shirts are the ones I like to wear...and re-wear...and re-wear....thus boosting your fraternity's visibility on campus via girls wearing your stuff.

Good luck!

Thank you, this is the kind of advice I was seeking. I'm gonna scrap the whole thing and go with some sort of Hawaiian lettering, I was inspired by the pro bowl today. I think that it would be much more appealing to sorority girls if I scrap the corona/ old english font and go with something more "fun." The "everybody gets lei'd" tagline is set in stone by the committee so I might as well stick with the Hawaiian-ish stuff and maybe try to find a hawaiian/ flowery font.

Attempt #2

Stef the Pef 02-10-2008 08:41 PM

I like attempt #2! Is there any way to make the flowers in the lettering a lighter color so "FIJI Islander" stands out a little more, though?

The lei hanging off the bottom is cute, too. I liked that in the last version and I like it in this one. :)

catiebug 02-10-2008 08:44 PM

Why do I always think of Red Dwarf whenever I check this thread???

Xidelt 02-10-2008 08:45 PM

I really like this font! It's much more tropical and consistent with the theme.

Benzgirl 02-10-2008 09:47 PM

Typically, if you are mixing colors darker colors are "background" colors and lighter colors are in "forward" colors for emphasis. Also, you are losing color in the lei. Can you put some brighter colors in it or make the outline heavier?
(sorry, I work with marketing people everyday, and they argue about "just the right color of grey")

Thetagirl218 02-10-2008 09:48 PM

I like both designs, but I agree that the first was hard to read "Fiji". I think the first design, with a font change, would be great for brothers' shirts, but I think the second design would be better for sorority shirts. I absolutely love the second design, hence why I think it would be best for sorority shirts.

alum 02-10-2008 09:53 PM

Could the letters that make up the words "FIJI Islander" be a cobalt or dark bright blue while the leaves behind the letters be a kelly green? Then the wording will be more prominent.

PhiGam 02-10-2008 10:34 PM

What I'm working on now is making the flowers alternate between pink and green, its coming along really well but its taking a good deal of time.

indygphib 02-11-2008 06:27 AM

Just a suggestion, but I'd definitely use a different font than the Comic Sans you used for the date of the event. It looks too 3rd-grade teacher-ish. (Personally, I can't STAND Comic Sans because it's so overused.)

I really like the other font, though!

FSUZeta 02-11-2008 09:37 AM

much, much more readable . agree that the lei is a little lost right now and brighter colors and more deliniated outline of the lei might help it "pop".

maybe a little grass shack at the edge of the water with a surfboard leaning against a wall and a woody parked nearby. palm trees too.

and since we all helped out, can we come?

I couldn't even read the FIJI until i read the next post ^

The 2nd one is so much better
You could make the date font more fun too though

PhiGam 02-11-2008 03:40 PM

Attempt #3, I really like this one and I think that all the girls will too.

I think it's perfect. Nice Job.

What indygphib said.

alum 02-11-2008 03:52 PM

Maybe the date could be written in the same font although a different size as FIJU Islander minus the flowers.

PhiGam 02-11-2008 04:59 PM

New attempt at a guys shirt, I incorporated the Fiji coat of arms into it (the country)
http://aycu11.webshots.com/image/429...7313488_rs.jpg

FSUZeta 02-11-2008 05:03 PM

both are really nice. have you tried "fiji islander" in a smaller size under the coat of arms? of course, that is if this is the design for the front of the shirt-then you could do the same on the back , only larger.

alum 02-11-2008 05:07 PM

I like the bamboo lettering except I would have it written in a lighter shade of brown. The capital D in Islander looks a bit like an O.

I think it's somewhat offensive to use a fake crest of scantily-clad natives with that risque saying as the motto.

PhiGam 02-11-2008 05:10 PM

Or this... with a bikini top hanging from the F.

As long as none of my brothers are offended (which they wont be) I think we'll be ok. Delta Tau Delta got away with a shirt that says "Fuck you, I'm a Delt" earlier this year.

Unregistered- 02-11-2008 05:18 PM

I don't get it. You're trying to do an "Islander" theme but your "natives" look almost Mayan/Incan/Aztec.

I'm Hawaiian. And I know my ancestors surely didn't look like that.

You might want to leave the "natives" out. They look out of place already as it is.

FSUZeta 02-11-2008 05:21 PM

that bikini top looks kind of like a double santa claus hat-i could not tell what it was until i read the post. maybe a different one?

You might have wanted to read what I posted. Thats the official coat of arms for the island of fiji.
