Joyeux Mardi Gras, Tout Le Monde!

I've got a Mardi Gras rush shirt I'll be sporting today...with real clothes underneath because I have a bid opening to go to.

ForeverRoses 02-05-2008 10:35 AM

I searched two grocery stores last night for a crown cake to bring in to work, but couldn't find one anywhere. :(

Happy Fat Tuesday everyone!

I'm wearing my Mardi Gras colors at work today! I'll eat a homemade king cake my mom made and sent to me! Yummy!

Your right- King cake (don't know why I said crown). The groceries in Evansville used to have them right up until Fat Tuesday, but here in Indy they don't seem to have them at all.

I knew there was a reason that I really felt like a beignet this morning!

The bakery near my house was already sold out when I went by first thing this morning. Better planning required next year.

Meanwhile, I'm just drinking as much Coca-Cola and eating as much ice cream and cheese as I can today -- my system is in for such a shock tomorrow!

But for today, laissez les bon temps rouler!

This thread brings back so many memories of APO's national convention in Nawlins back in '02. You could've sworn it was Mardi Gras then!

SWTXBelle 02-05-2008 06:40 PM

My daughter made her first King Cake today - yummy, yummy. And I'm so proud . . .

Memories... :o I remember I didn't want to come home after that!

We don't have King Cake here, but we do have malassadas (eaten year round, but even moreso on Fat Tuesday):

http://www.96seven44.com/images/leon...alasadas_1.jpg

Malassadas are essentially a doughnut shaped as shown (no hole in it), about the size of a racket ball, deep fried until golden brown and dusted with a light coat of granulated sugar. It's best when served hot! Malassadas originally came to Hawaii in the late 1800s when Portuguese immigrants came here to work on the plantations.

Catholic rules = no wasting food. If it's already made, you eat it and fast another day.

SWTXBelle 02-06-2008 09:45 PM

I gave up red meat. AND I'M FROM TEXAS!

LucyKKG 02-06-2008 10:01 PM

I gave up fast food. I made a list of places that constitute fast food. Restaurants aren't fast food but Taco Bell, KFC, etc are.

I thought about giving up Coke, but I've already done it twice! Haha! Other years it was French fries and ice cream.

Benzgirl 02-07-2008 10:24 PM

On Fat Tuesday, the tradition in this area is to go to one of the Polish bakeries and buy Paczekis (pronounced Poonch keys). Oh, they are soooooo good!

Fat Tuesday didn't get it's name for nothing!
