shadowyi 02-02-2008 06:44 PM

Well, it does have the moniker 'University of Spoiled Children' (USC) because of many affluent people that attend there. But all my friends who went there are happy and very laid back.

Dear Belle,
Please check your PM box. The SC website is: www.usc.edu . Click on that for some facts about the university. Click on student affairs, check the menu for sorority and fraternity information.

ellebud 02-03-2008 12:43 AM

My daughter attends USC but did not affiliate. I did...in the olden days. What I can tell you is that rush is VERY competitive. And, I suspect that some kids at UCLA designed the moniker University of Spoiled Children. In fact the average family income of kids attending UCLA is higher than those at USC.

I know several people that left USC because they could not stand the surrounding area. They did not feel safe leaving campus.

bejazd 02-03-2008 03:42 PM

^^^ That may be true, SoCalGirl. but sort of an unfair slam on the university maybe? I mean, it's not like you go visit the campus and don't notice that there's a pretty rough neighborhood surrounding the campus!
I think USC has done a lot over the years to IMPROVE the safety of the neighborhood by buying and rehabbing dilapidating properties...and they def educate their students on the importance of taking responsibility for their personal security. All of the Greek houses have very good security systems- better than most of the other houses I've been to at other schools in "better" neighborhoods.

SoCalGirl 02-03-2008 03:46 PM

^I agree it's not fair to the university. But, these are people that went to the school over different years (decades) and had the same feeling. Which isn't fair to the student. :(

I managed to get two degrees from USC, live in the "bad area" for four years, and commute in for two, and never feel in danger.

USC is a wonderful school with great history. The school and the community at large are working hard on making the area a safer place. THere is a lot of development downtown that is creating great opportunities for living for students and young professionals. I wouldn't hesitate to send my children there.

To the OP, I posted my rush story in recruitment stories, granted, it is a decade old. PM me if you have any questions!

southernbelleQT 02-03-2008 05:06 PM

thanks yall!

tsteven those old kentucky cheer photos are sooo cute!

honeychile 02-04-2008 10:59 PM

southernbelleQT, the very best recruitment thread for USC was deleted by the original poster. It is every bit as competitive as an SEC recruitment - have the recs, the right look, the right sparkle, and the right attitude. You could probably read any of the SEC rush threads, and get a good idea about what to expect.

southernbelleQT 02-05-2008 03:56 PM

my entire family went to school in the SEC so i have a good idea of what that is.

what can i say, ima rebel ;) haha

While it has similarities to the SEC, USC will be different in some ways. For instance, dress will be different. Not many Lilly P. dresses worn in Calif...I had no idea what they were until some gals on here started posting links and photos. In general, Calif. tends to dress on the trendy side (designer jeans and heels) instead of floral sundresses with pearls. Pearls might come out at preference, but not much before then. Dress classy, but with a fun or funky twist...if that makes sense.

bejazd 02-06-2008 07:26 PM

Peppy, I think honeychile is talking about South Carolina!

I'd never heard of Lily P either til I saw it here!

bejazd 02-06-2008 08:16 PM

Oh, you'd be just as happy in the ridiculously expensive jeans we So Cal girls are addicted to! It's all about the sunglasses, the bag and the bling!;)

Jones Hall at UPS looks just like that.:):D;)

lulumobile 02-19-2008 07:36 PM

imo, schools in cali, NY, etc are more fashion THINK they are being avant garde by wearing a blue Lily dress instead of a pink one. personally I love Lily so its just whatever floats your boat!

lulumobile 02-19-2008 07:37 PM

*fashionable than southern schools who...sorry computer cut it out

amycat412 02-19-2008 07:44 PM

USC also has one of, if not the largest university police forces in the nation.

No, honeychile is talking about Southern California. She said it is as competitive as an SEC school. South Carolina is an SEC school. I think the point she was trying to make was like SEC schools, it is more important to have recs at Southern California than at other West Coast schools.

USC=Southern California. When you hear analysts on ESPN talking about "USC" there is no question in anyone's mind which USC they mean. Trojans.

I agree with this.

Those in the SEC often like to think that when saying 'USC,' it's in reference to their 'Cocks.

USC is Southern California. South Carolina is South Carolina.

I will agree, but it can be confusing when you're in the South & hear USC.

However...not nearly as confusing as OSU. Ohio State? Oklahoma State? Oregon State?

Yeah, true...BUT...if South Carolina had a decent football program, it might be a tad more confusing!

You are correct, violetpretty. I freely admit I'm absolutely clueless about anything in the SEC. I couldn't even name all the schools in the SEC!!:o
One of my son's friends just had an audition with the music program there last week! She's a sweetheart, so I hope it works out for her, but I don't know if she'll rush. The music dept is pretty time consuming from what I understand!

Alabama Georgia Mississippi State Arkansas Kentucky South Carolina Auburn LSU Tennessee Florida Mississippi Vanderbilt
Feel free to correct me if that's wrong!
