What does your badge look like?
This was discussed a little in another thread, but I'm giving it it's own now.
I have a pearl badge, and I just got my chapter letters guard (Eta Mu!) and ritual (marshal) dangle! I can't wait to wear it all together at chapter on Monday. Hooray! What does your badge look like? |
Mine was a sapphire-and-pearl one with enameled letters. I lost it in April of 2007. :( I had a recording secretary dangle. My guard was our coat of arms. I decided I wanted that instead of my chapter letters since I had to wait so long to be able to wear the coat of arms. I figured my chapter would come up in conversation anyway. The coat-of-arms guard is no longer available for the general membership but is used for LCs or GCs or some other official office.
I do have a 25-year pin now, but I do plan on replacing my badge one day. |
Don't give up hope, MSKKG! We've had some amazing rescue/return stories. :)
My badge is sapphire/pearl, no enamel. I've rescued two badges from eBay that are both all-pearl. One is from the 1930s and you can see the difference in the quality from then to now. Some day I'd like to have an antique plain gold one, but they seem to be *just* out of my range at this time. I've seen some Keepers' collections and they have some *gorgeous* old badges!! |
I'm still hopeful, but I'm anxious to get another one. I can't decide if I want one like I had or if I'd rather get a plain gold one. I keep checking eBay but seem to get outbid every time.
|
Mine is pearl with enamel and its prettttttty much my prized possession.
We had a sister have her badge stolen out of her car this past fall and she was devastated. So I really hope you are able to replace yours MSKKG! |
Mine is a sapphire and pearl one, no enamel, with the requisite initials, chapter, and initiation date enscribed on the back. But hopefully I'll get a pearl dangle soon for a 3.8! I think that this is gonna be the semester :)

All pearl
enamel Delta Xi (Carnegie Mellon) guard attached 2 dangles Marshal-gavel, Chapter Award-fleurdelis |
Mine is sapphire and pearl with enamel letters. It would break my heart if I ever lost it.
|
You bet it would . . . and it has broken mine. :( I can hardly think about it without getting sad.
|
Well, I have a collection...
My own badge, which is all sapphire. I ordered plain letters, but it came with enamel, which I've never really liked. It has my EE chapter guard, and I removed my officer dangles a couple of years ago. Some of my other favorites, from ebay: An all pearl badge with an EE chapter guard from the 60's. No luck in contacting the original owner after I won the auction. An all-pearl with plain letters from the 50's, which I to which I added a tiny pearl fleur de lis pin, another ebay purchase, as a guard. (The owner was deceased.) A plain gold with plain letters from the 30's, which has a beautiful brushed patina. (Another instance in which the owner was deceased.) I like to wear a couple pins at once, and I always get questions. This is when I say, "This one is my pin, and this one is my Kappa public service announcement." It's a great opportunity to share the importance of badge disposition. |
Sorry to crash but ya'll need to post pictures....your badges sound gorgeous.

Here's my badge! It looks like the letters have enamel on them, but they're plain gold. The dangle is a candle for ritual (marshal), but it's kind of hard to see. |
Very, very pretty. Thanks for the pics I love to see other NPC groups badges.
|
I just re-examined my badge and I just realized I have a candle instead of a gavel. Hmmm, it's only been since the mid80s that I was Marshal and I still wear my key (and H's USMA A-pin) at least once a month. I always thought it was a gavel. :)
|
My Marshal dangle is more of a sceptre for Seargeant at Arms, which was the closest thing to Marshal that was available, and what the Marshal before me had. I like this Herff-Jones "Keeper of Ritual" candle much better:

Yeah, I have the HJ candle one. I can't really picture the other one you're talking about, though.
I wore my new guard and dangle to chapter on Monday and everyone was like, "Oooh!" Yay! |
Color me jealous... No one told us about guards or fun stuff like that when my New Member class ordered our badges. But I think I'm gonna buy one over the summer now. The things GC teaches you... :)

I know! I don't think anyone in my chapter has a guard. I would love to have one with my chapter letter though. |
It seems like having chapter guards is one of those chapter-specific things. We all had them at EE, but no one in best friend's chapter at LSU ordered them.
|
In my chapter, only the president wore a guard. The guard was passed down from prez to prez along with a special award badge that looked a little like this, but older:
http://www.hjgreek.com/assets/images...large/7721.jpg The only other "special" badge that got passed down was for the member with the highest cumulative GPA. It looked alot like the above badge, too, but not exactly the same. My own personal badge is the alternating sapphire and peal and looks like this: http://www.hjgreek.com/assets/images...arge/12139.jpg I chose it because my birthstone is also sapphire. |
I FINAAALLLLLLLY got my badge in this past weekend! I got the all pearl one with enamel. I was very sad to open it and see a pearl missing. Now I have to send it back =(

I have an all sapphire badge w/ emanel. i have a chapter guard and officer dangles for: new member chairman, housing chairman, member at large, song chairman and adviser! that's a lotta bling! :)
i also have 2 rescued badges that i adopted. one is about 20 years old alternative pearl and sapphire and the other is an older badge, plain gold. the plain gold badge is my absolute favorite! not many of my actives have chapter guards - heck, some don't even have a badge! we went through a period of time a few years ago where the girls did not want to order a badge. (i cannot imagine).... |

I've never seen anyone wear a badge with a dangle or a chapter guard at USC. Hmmm.
|
My badge is a sapphire pearl with black enamel letters. I have a chapter guard for EK chapter which is also sapphire and pearl. Some of the active girls bought me a convention dangle in 2002 when we were there. It was a very nice present!

My Badge + ZE President's Badge
In addition to regular badges, does anyone else have pictures of the more unique badges? I'm curious if most chapters have one or two special badges for various purposes.
Well of course I love my badge (don't we all?)- it's sapphire & pearl, no enamel, with a ZE chapter guard. My chapter didn't really use officer dangles so I never really considered them. Before my new member class, I don't think most got guards either- but I believe around 1/3 of my class did purely by coincidence. The main reason I got the guard is that I was paranoid I'd lose my badge otherwise! I always thought that I may "upgrade" to sapphire & diamond someday, but I've really grown to love the sapphire & pearl look. So I guess we'll see! http://img443.imageshack.us/img443/317/badgemine2.jpg But I also think the special badges are really interesting. My chapter had two- one for the President and one for the VPS. The VPS key was an antique plain gold badge from... I want to say the 40s? We usually awarded it weekly to someone who went above & beyond in sisterhood or sometimes academics. And the President key was a special award key with opals and enamel, which was worn by the President: http://img27.imageshack.us/img27/544...president2.jpg I took these pictures back in college on the lid of a little Kappa box :-) I'd love to see pictures of the non-standard badges out there if anyone has some! |
Has anyone ever seen the official fraternity jewelry that's super special and old and is passed down by the fraternity presidents? Before my chapter's installation, we got to see it. It was like story time with Denise Rugani. Soooo neat!

Any of the Keepers care to show some pictures? I actually don't think I've seen any!
|
I saw some of them at Convention and I practically drooled all over the table. There's also a Kappa history book that has some cool pictures of badges before they were standardized. Some have turquoise, opals, etc.
