Spike Lee's School Daze Turns 20!
OK...I am feeling a bit 'long in the tooth' today as I'm knocking on 37's door:D...
Can you believe it's been twenty years since the release of School Daze?! Anyhoo, I posted some of my favorite scenes and thoughts about the flick on my blog. Watching the Alphas step still gives me chills (its sooooo ice cold!) |
I have School Daze on DVD and it's really interesting to watch with Spike's comentary.

Fortunately, the movie didn't come out until the year AFTER I crossed...!

It is indeed a classic!! |
This is an interesting thread...
I am in a scene in School Daze. I am behind the president and his wife during the homecoming game, when he says "Don't Worry". I'm the one who has green leggings on... My friends and I were freshmen when Spike filmed the movie. One of the nights, I actually spoke to Spike--long story--anyhow, Morehouse and Spelman would not allow filming on their campuses because no "educational scenes" were filmed--only "party scenes". At least that is why Spike said. I missed the pool party because many of my classmates were sho up in there... I actually know the "young lady" who was the "Big Man's" love interest during the pool party scene. |
Oh, I definitely have to bring out my DVD tomorrow & catch that scene. I'll be looking for the one who has green leggings on...
In other news, we're having an 80s party Friday. I want to look flyy! Any pics/suggestions? |
i'm old but feeling good and loving life. i was in love with the character that we now know as gina - - - tisha campbell.

Tip: to those who have the updated DVD, you must watch the movie with the cast commentary turned on (Tisha Campbell, Rusty Cundieff, Darryl Bell, Kadeem Hardison, and Bill Nunn). It was HILARIOUS and a lot of fun to listen to.

And I think somebody mentioned here on GC too that Cassie Davis (House of Payne) was in it as one of the girls yelling at Dap from the dorm window. |

I'm going to check out SD. I haven't watched it in so long. The nostalgia for those hair dos, the clothes...LMAO! I'll have to FF when PH performs at the HC concert. :( :spooked:
I think I was a Sophomore in HS, if it came out the Spring of 88. |

School Daze was my joint... I was just about to pledge Iota when I seen School Daze. I was like, is this what is in store for me.... NOPE.... much worse.
For the longest, I thought Mission College was Morgan State; right down to the brother named Dap that my roommate. I guess that makes me Kadeem Hardison, being that I was from NYC. |
I must have seen that movie twenty times when it came out! Just loved it. I was in high school.
I was aware of the D9, but never gave them much thought. I knew that I would be going to college and a HBCU at that. After School Daze, I went black Greek crazy. Started researching all the fraternities and sororities histories. It lead me to the light! That Alpha Light!!! |
SD may have had a profound affect on us in the Black community that the majority community will never understand. I would love to see some stats on who attended HBCUs, or any form of higher education past high school, because of it. I don't mean to give it more credit than it is due, I just know the affect it had on my household.
WAKE UP! |
My mother took me to see School Daze back in 88 i was 6 or 7 years old but it stuck with me for a long time and it is still one of my favorite movies. I still have the soundtrack VHS and the DVD with Spikes commentary on it. The BBC actually Aired it tonigh here in the UK. Although I had to watch it as an Adult to really understand it, but it motivated me to want to go to a HBCU, unfortunately i did not have the money to go to school until recently with my GI Bill, I am still just a bystander in the greek world and working on my studies, doing community service, and making friends that are in the fraterinites and sororities. I am overseas but i will be back home soon and I can't wait for the New chapter to open in my life. Wish me luck :D

I loved this movie alot growing up. I know that movie inspired me to want to have the experience of going to a HBCU. Fast foward to college and my mom would not let me go out of state so I bought the VHS to take to school and mix HBCU and PWI!! I can say that I got to meet Spike Lee while in school and asked alot of questions about the movie which he so graciously answered. Now I have the DVD with commentary and it is really good. I plan on showing it to my nephew and niece as they grow up and beginning college planning.
|
It came out in 1988, two years after I graduated (PWI). To me, it's definitely one of Spike's more entertaining works (my actual favorite is Mo Better Blues).
I can tell you, however, it didn't really have any influence on my pursuing membership. I may have already figured out that NPHC greeks on the graduate level had differing priorities. |
|
Spike Lee is one of my favorite film directors and School Daze is a movie that I often like to see even on reruns on television. It addresses so many cultural issues that are still prevalent in our communities today. I wonder if he ever thought about doing a reunion with School Daze 2 at homecoming with the characters children going to their former college! Sounds like a great screenplay--hit me up Spike!
