Aiming High

I was reading in "Psychology Today" mag. and it was saying that a new study reveals just how strong our preferences are for the taller-man-shorter-woman duo. Researchers found that only 23% of men would consider dating a woman taller than they are. Women were even bigger snobs. Only 4% were open to breaking the romantic tradition.

I think there may be a thread on this, but I was posting this one because I honestly think most women would date a shorter man if he had copious resources. A prime example would be Tom Cruise/Katie Holmes/Nicole Kidman.

I prefer taller regardless, but would you go shorter if he had a great personality and a little money (lol). Guys, would you date a woman that was taller than you?

I wish there was a way we could get a % bar going on this one.:(

DSTCHAOS 01-22-2008 04:21 PM

I'm short and I don't encounter too many men shorter than I am.

The ones I have encountered weren't too attractive, except for a couple. Some of them felt they had to be asswipes or obsessed with themselves to make up for their short stature.

I'm attracted to a certain look and I always find that in men who range from 4" to 1'5" taller than I am. :) There's no man shortage so I've never had to venture to men who are 5' tall.

Dionysus 01-22-2008 04:28 PM

My preference is 5'6'' to 5'9'', average weight, regardless of gender. I would choose short over too skinny.

KonfidentOne 01-22-2008 04:31 PM

I don't think I could date someone shorter than me. I'm only 5'2", and thats stretching it about a quarter inch, lol. I've come across two guys that were about my height, tried getting to know them, but it could have never been more than a friendship. I like a guy to be at least as tall as I am with heels on as a minimum, because I wear them alomost daily (which means he can't be any shorter than about 5'7") My preference however, is at least 5'11, 6' even. And there's no such thing as too tall ;)

AlethiaSi 01-22-2008 04:32 PM

I'm 5' 8" and I come across quite a few guys who are shorter than I am, it's kind of a big turnoff for me.
I at least like for guys to be 2 inches taller than I am. If I met a guy who was shorter than me but we clicked well, I suppose I would give it a shot.

My best friend is the same height as me and is approached constantly by shorter guys. She has dated guys that are about her height or shorter, but prefers guys that are taller.

You're 5'2", so you shouldn't have a problem at all.:p

Geez, he can be the sweetest guy ever, but if he's shorter than me, it's just not gonna work out.:o:(:)

lol lol lol. I was thinking the same thing too, but I just assumed he was a she after I read that post. :D

KonfidentOne 01-22-2008 04:49 PM

No... I'm definitely 100% woman, straight, and i'm a member of a national service organization, not an NPHC organization... (Though we do operate very closely with one)

Benzgirl 01-22-2008 05:05 PM

I'm 5'4" and have never gone out with anyone shorter than me. But then, what percentage of single men are?

I had one date with a guy that was 5'7". Most men I date are at least 6' tall. I don't have any objection to men that are say 5'9" or taller, but less than that I just don't find them attractive. It's not to say I wouldn't date them, though.

And, if they are skinny (tall or short), forget it.

A couple of years ago, I went on two dates with a short guy (he claimed we were the same height--5 ft. 3 in.--but I was taller than he was even in my flatest flats!). I came to find out on the first date that he was quite loaded. Didn't make any difference. I felt like I was out with a little boy and I just couldn't do it. Perhaps that's shallow, but I figure that if men can prefer a certain body type, I can prefer a certain height! :) This is the only guy I've been out with who was under 5 ft. 11 in...going back to 8th grade, lol!

lol--why did I think the same thing until I read her post? It makes sense now; she's a Kappa sweet.

When Doves Cry 01-22-2008 06:39 PM

I'm only 5'4" so most guys are taller than i am
But once, last semester, I went to the bars with some guy friends
And I danced with one of them and it felt reeeally weird because he was shorter than I was. He was kind of drunk and wouldn't take his hands off me. The attention was nice but I stopped it when he tried to kiss me .
Guys shorter than I am just don't attract me.I think it's because i'm already short so a guy shorter looks just weird to me. However, fi I was like 5'8" or something, I dont think I'd mind as much.

aephi alum 01-22-2008 08:17 PM

I'm only 5'2", so there aren't too many men out there who are shorter than I am. But height is not as important to me as other factors, like personality, intelligence, and sense of humor.

CULater 01-22-2008 08:27 PM

so many of us 5'2 here!! The only men i've dated have been 6' and up. My mom is about 3'' taller than my dad (i'm shorter than both alas), and it is definitely weird. I'm not the best at judging height (unless you are really tall or short), but somehow, I only go for guys at least 6', go figure.

AlphaFrog 01-22-2008 08:28 PM

I'm the exact same height as my husband...and he still compliments me when I wear heels...so I don't think he minds, and I know I don't.

I've never dated anyone shorter than me, and only one guy who was more than 4" taller than me.

I just don't feel comfortable dating a short guy. I like being no taller than his shoulders. I feel all safe and protected that way. I used to cross you off the list if you weren't at least 6' tall. The shortest guy I've dated was 5'8" to my 5'3".

No, I'm not a Kappa sweet. I'm a Krimson Kourt.

preciousjeni 01-23-2008 04:39 PM

I can't handle men shorter than I am (5'6). My husband is in the range of 6'3 or 6'4. There a biological factor to all of this - it's not just preference. Instinctively, heterosexual women seek men who are larger than they are. The bigger the man, the more protection he can provide...or so our instincts would have us believe. But, then again, if a man is a giant (clinically), it starts going the other direction because we instinctively see that as abnormal.

Thank goodness I am 6'4"

Scandia 01-23-2008 07:42 PM

I'm only 5'5"- and that's when I wake up in the morning. I have not met many men who are shorter than me. I like them between 5'8" and 6'2" in general.

I totally agree with you. There's no way on God's green earth am I gonna get serious with a guy who's shorter than me. I'm like 5' 6"/5' 7" somewhere around there, :p but yes you are SO right. If a guy can prefer a certain body type, then I can have a certain height preference.

I recently took an upper division physical anthropology class and the information we were presented with was that people sought mates of similar height and other characteristics (biological and social) about 85% of the time.

AGDee 01-24-2008 12:37 AM

All my life my dad had a complex about his height. He stopped growing when he had polio at age 14 (young for a male to stop growing) and is only 5'6". My mom was 5'4". My dad's second wife is like 5'9". I was really shocked that he dated, let alone married someone taller than him because he was always so sensitive about his height.

As for me, I prefer a bigger guy (not skinny, like others have said), but I'm only 5'3", so it's not tough to find men taller than me.

There was no need for you PMing me.

Believe me when I say I already knew the answer to your question before you sent it and I already know the 'history' of your org as it relates to Kappa Alpha Psi.

I wanted to see how you would respond.

Next time, feel free to answer here.

Lady Pi Phi 01-24-2008 09:19 PM

I really think that some women are passing up really great guys simply because they are shorter than you.

I was dead set against dating guys that were shorter than me (I'm 5'8"). But then I met Mr. Pi Phi. He's only 5'6". I wear heels all the time. He's completely comfortable with my height and I am with his. Every other guy I have ever dated had been taller than me, and those relationships never worked out (but I'm not saying his height has made our relationship successful), but if I had passed up on him because he was shorter than me, I'd miss out on a wonderful man, we wouldn't be buying a house and we wouldn't be discussing our future marriage plans.

SWTXBelle 01-24-2008 09:28 PM

At 5'2", this hasn't been an issue for me. I'v dated some "short" guys, but they were all taller than me!

I'm 5'4 and my current boyfriend is a foot taller than me, and i wouldn't have it any other way :)

LucyKKG 01-25-2008 12:42 AM

I'm 5'6" and my boyfriend is 6'5" or 6'6"! Yeah, I have to stand on my tippy toes to kiss him. I've dated a guy who was a little shorter than me, and I always found it weird. Even when a guy (dating or not) is seriously the same height as me, I just think he's shorter for some reason. Lol.

Oh but I love being able to wear heels when I'm with my boyfriend. Yay!
