Cowboy boots, yay or nay?

Recruitment starts on the 24th.
What do you think about wearing cowboy boots during open house?
I'm going for TTU in Texas.

Shoot me now if you think they're dreadful, lol.
For the third round I'm going to wear a tan-ish brown dress and I was thinking to wear brown cowboy boots.
Not pref day, but the day before. Our open house days are split into 2 days.

Yes. No. Yes. No?

ktbug10474 01-22-2008 01:42 PM

Well me personally I would say no to the cowboy boots but that's just because I've never really liked them.

What I would do if the third round is pref (i'm assuming) I would do a really pretty brown sandal with it ( a heeled sandal like a kitten heel to a 2" heel)

GOOD LUCK THOUGH WITH RECRUITMENT!!!!

kddani 01-22-2008 01:44 PM

Not sure if you're asking about open house or third round...

Open house they may be okay, depending on the campus. They'd better be comfortable, though.

If third round is pref (not sure if it is or not), I would say no to the boots. Pref is a more dressy event, and cowboy boots with a dress are not dressy. I realize that I'm not southern, but cowboy boots and a dress just scream casual to me.

DSTCHAOS 01-22-2008 01:45 PM

I like some cowboy boots but wouldn't advise wearing them for an open house.

Benzgirl 01-22-2008 01:51 PM

They are too cliche. Don't wear them.

KSUViolet06 01-22-2008 01:54 PM

I would say no. I could MAYBE see them during an earlier round with jeans, but never during 3rd round WITH A DRESS.

SWTXBelle 01-22-2008 03:49 PM

No - you want the attention on you, not your clothing. Boots would really stand out - maybe in a good way, maybe not - I wouldn't risk it.

Kitemom 01-22-2008 04:12 PM

Ok I am from West Texas and if you see people wear boots and they look cute, I'd wear them. I would check with my friends and see what they said. That being said a friends who daughter went through rush at TCU this fall wore some Jessica Simpson boots with a sun dress. It looked really cute and she could pull it off. But if this is pref day I would say NO. And no to sandles in Lubbock in Jan.

violetpretty 01-22-2008 06:09 PM

Normally I'd say no to cowboy boots, but you ARE in Texas. I mean, Wade Phillips wore cowboy boots to his interview with the Dallas Cowboys and he got the job. I'd ask your Rho Gamma or get the consensus of other PNMs.

TexasStar 01-22-2008 06:22 PM

No.

breathesgelatin 01-22-2008 06:31 PM

I say no. I don't care what round it is, don't wear them to recruitment with a dress.

LadyLonghorn 01-22-2008 06:58 PM

No. Please. No.

AlphaFrog 01-22-2008 07:07 PM

MY opinion...

Yes:

No (for more reasons than the navy blue & black combo):

LadyLonghorn 01-22-2008 07:23 PM

Alpha Frog, with all due respect, trust someone experienced with a lot of Texas rushes. Although cute in its own way, that is not a look that will go over well at Tech and will draw attention to the PNM in a not so positive way.

Palpitation, if you seriously question if something slightly unusual would be OK to wear during rush, chances are you'll end up being self conscious if you wear it. I've seen your other posts and know you're super anxious, so don't add anything you're unsure of to the mix.

Army Wife'79 01-22-2008 07:59 PM

My D had to buy a pair for rush b/c all the actives had to wear "themed outfits" every day and one day was western so I wouldn't want to wear them to a house that all the actives were wearing them. Since you don't know what they'll be wearing, I'd steer clear of them.

That's why I said MY opinion. I personally like the look if you find the right color combos and can pull it off....meaning it's something you would wear outside of rush and feel natural in. If it's feeling a little like a little girl wearing mom's heels or a Halloween costume, don't do it.

But...take this as the advice of someone who went to rush straight from colorguard practice in workout shorts and a t-shirt, and then black jeans with a funky sash-like thing 2nd round.

Benzgirl 01-22-2008 08:34 PM

LadyLonghorn,

The OP did not ask for opinions to be given only from Texans. Alpha Frog is entitled to her opinion, as am I, as is everyone else on GC. We may even get an SEC Fratty to tell her to wear Croakies and Ray Bans with her boots.

Ultimately, the PNM needs to make up her own mind whether she decides to wear the boots during recruitment or ever. IMHO, I put cowboy boots up there with UGGs. Hate them both! But put on a pair of glove-leather Chanel Thigh-Highs...that is chic!

Alpha Frog has two very good examples of Glamour Dos and Glamour Don'ts. Accept her opinion as that, and be happy she didn't blast you.

Ciao

icelandelf 01-22-2008 08:55 PM

I like the sundress look with cowboy boots :)

palpitation 01-22-2008 08:59 PM

okay, okay.

Thanks for your opinions everyone, but it's not for pref night.
It's for casual dress.

This is a picture of me before a brad paisley concert about a year and a half ago.
And it's pretty much what I'm talking about, is that too stand-out for rush?
But remember, I'm from Texas.

SWTXBelle 01-22-2008 09:00 PM

Army Wife makes a good point. I thought I had the CUTEST dress for third round - blue with red polka dots. (It was the 80s - trust me it was cute THEN) Walked into the Gamma Phi room- they had the EXACT SAME DRESS - only red with blue polka dots. Sigh. Please note - I ended up Gamma Phi. AND I'M GLAD I DID - but I was mortified when I walked in that room.

eta - You are SO CUTE in that outfit. But ask someone from Tech if it would be a good idea for recruitment.

Stef the Pef 01-22-2008 09:54 PM

Baylor opinion? Yay, but no white for winter. And nay on any day past the sorta casualish first rounds.

That's a cute outfit, though...good luck!

kddani 01-22-2008 09:56 PM

Not a fan of the outfit, personally. Some people may like, but some people may have a strong dislike of it. Plus, like was mentioned above, if its something you're not sure is appropriate, you're going to be paranoid about it.

Also, consider the length of your skirt. Don't want to be flashing anyone.

FSUZeta 01-22-2008 10:01 PM

honest opinion: in your photo, i thought your boots looked like majorette boots from days of old. if you are planning on wearing that dress(which is cute-and i like the accessories) i think that strappy sandals (flat or heeled) would be most flattering.

wearing the boots will be a gamble, even in texas. i think someone else said something similar in an earlier post, and i paraphrase: it could be good of bad. you could either be known as the girl in the cute boots( a plus) or as "boot girl",(a negative).

breathesgelatin 01-23-2008 04:41 AM

No no no no no---

I can speak only for UT, and there not as an advisor or anything and only really from what I observe sorority girls wearing on campus here and my alumnae friends from Texas schools here in Austin. But no! no no no.

It's true that girls at UT and I'm sure at Tech too wear this look for football games and things like that but recruitment is different than those... Those are really ultra-casual and even first rounds is a different deal. I actually don't think that outfit is heinous but I wouldn't wear it for recruitment. Honestly I also agree that that dress is too summery for right now... I don't know if it's been as cold in Lubbock as it has been here but GIRL! don't freeze yourself! :)

Good luck with everything. I went up to Lubbock for Thanksgiving and got to see the Tech campus. It's so pretty!

LadyLonghorn 01-23-2008 06:00 PM

Thank you, Breathesgelatin. That's exactly what I was trying to say. It doesn't matter how cute an outfit is, if it's not a great look for rush at a particular school, then you should really reconsider wearing it. I was born in Texas. I live in Texas. I go to school in Texas. I have dozens of friends and family members in the Greek systems in all the big Texas schools, and many at Tech. I know what rush is like at these schools. Sure, anyone could give their opinion about what to wear for rush, but if you aren't familiar with a school's culture, you can be steering a PMN in the wrong direction. It's not about whether or not a look is cute, it's about whether it's appropriate for a particular situation. We're not the SEC here, but we're pretty danged southern and traditional.

In the end, it's up to the PNM to decide what she wants to wear. But since she's asking for opinions, I think it's a positive thing that she gets some from people who actually know what her campus is like.

SigKapAngel767 01-23-2008 06:03 PM

I vote no boots for rush (even though they look ADORABLE in your outfit). I cosign with FSUZeta and think sandals....paired with an incredible pedicure, of course!:)

ErinBee 01-23-2008 06:23 PM

I'm from Texas and I would say that as long as it is in the first round and you can pull it off. I think it looks really cute and know a lot of girls that look fabulous. As for me, I could not pull off that look to save my life and I raised cows my whole life.

You're welcome! LOL.

And agreed on all points.

Let me just re-emphasize to the OP one more time: GIRL! It's been like 30 degrees here! You should wear something warmer and seasonal! :)

I hate that they are called this. I know that this is just the popular culture reference for them, but still. :(

I think the boots look big, and the heel somehow doesn't work.

Or did she say that b/c they are literally from the Jessica Simpson line of shoes and boots (as in "my Jimmy Choo boots" or whatever) - which being a shoe person, I am still personally horrified by the designs from her line, but that is just me, the shoe queen...

RushLeader08 01-24-2008 04:55 PM

Oh lordy, she's back.

We were hoping that your absence meant that you threw yourself into a pack of hungry hyenas.

Apparently they were from the "Simpson shoe line" of which I'm unfamiliar.

I thought they were just talking about her Dukes of Hazard-ish look. :p

I didn't know either.

But now that I know, wearing Jessica Simpson boots are about just as cool as wearing Jaclyn Smith's collection from Wal-Mart.

I refreshed my Jessica Simpson memory and looked on Macy's website. Her clothes aren't too pricey but they are certainly average if not below average.

Jaclyn Smith is K Mart. (This is what brand my black sorority pants are, LOL.) Kathie Lee used to be evil empire Walmart but I think they got rid of it.

Jessica S does have a shoe line and I've been frightened that some of them are actually cute...much in the same way that I'm frightened that I like Paris Hilton's perfumes. But I figure...if I wouldn't buy something FOR the name, I shouldn't NOT buy it for the name.
