My live recruitment story, Spring 2008

So obviously I am at a university in Florida, attending a pretty big school. Next week they are beginning an informal Spring Recruitment for women who were unable to rush in the fall to get to know the sororities better and ask questions. Unfortunately not all of the sororities are accepting new members right now so I'm not sure which ones are participating. I am not concerned about finding the most 'popular' sorority to join, so of course I wouldn't be bummed if ABC wasn't accepting new membership. I'm trying to find one that I would feel completely comfortable being myself in.

Wish me luck!

Good Luck Florida Girl ... PS im super jealous your in FL with the warm weather and I'm suffering through 20 degree weather up in PA!

FSUZeta 01-21-2008 08:21 AM

a year or two ago another pnm reported her informal recruitment experience at uf here on greekchat. she went in not knowing what to expect, and ended up falling in love with one chapter and happily accepted a bid from them. i wish the same for you!!

Scandia 01-21-2008 08:48 AM

Good luck! Please keep us updated.

KSUViolet06 01-22-2008 11:25 PM

Best of luck!

Ok so an introductory meeting was tonight. It was a chance for potential girls to meet all the chapters at our school and chat with the members. It went fabulously! There are 3 sororities that I REALLY have my eye on, but unfortunately two of them aren't rushing until the fall. If the other sorority is interested in me I should receive an email tonight inviting me to do an informal rush this week. I am torn between this one sorority or just waiting until fall....ahhh!!

I'd say check out every chapter that is participating this semester. If you find one you like, and they offer you a bid, it might be a good idea to take it. It's not unheard of for juniors to get bids even at the most competitive schools, but the longer you wait, the harder it will get. I'd hate for you to blow a chance with a chapter that would be a great fit and available for you to join now, only to not have any of those three as a choice in fall recruitment.

Thetagirl218 01-23-2008 12:44 AM

Edit!

KSUViolet06 01-23-2008 01:31 AM

I don't know what school you're at, but at the bigger schools in FL like UF & FSU, it can be harder for upperclassmen to get bids. It's not totally impossible, but your chance of getting a bid would be less than that of a freshman or sophomore.

smiley21 01-23-2008 08:14 AM

I definitely say give informal recruitment a chance. I agree that if you wait for fall, your chances will be very slim. Maximize your opportunity now. If you get a bid from an sorority that you really like, then I think you should accept.

FSUZeta 01-23-2008 09:35 AM

fingers crossed that you receive emails for all the sororities that can participate in informal recruitment. give them all a good look, and visit them each several times if you are invited to.

in other words, give yourself as many chances to fall in love with these 3chapters as you can. if it doesn't work out, you can always give fall recruitment a try, but why delay enjoying the fun and sisterhood you can be enjoying now, for something that might not materialize in the fall?

Benzgirl 01-23-2008 01:29 PM

Consider all invitations and decide if you could call it "home". If it doesn't fit you, you will know. But, the longer you go on through school, the harder it is at an SEC school to receive a bid.

Good luck on your invites!

FlaGirl07 01-23-2008 02:40 PM

I got an email from one of the chapters that is participating in spring recruitment inviting me to come to the house tonight for a get-together. I'm really excited because I really enjoyed talking to the girls last night...We'll see how it goes!

OleMissGlitter 01-23-2008 03:20 PM

Good luck!

FSUZeta 01-23-2008 04:15 PM

hooray!!

Hayley2007 01-23-2008 04:56 PM

How exciting! Good luck and let us know how things go!

srmom 01-23-2008 06:21 PM

Good Luck!!! And, have fun tonight!!

FlaGirl07 01-23-2008 11:54 PM

OMG everyone, so the first event was tonight and it was fabulous! I was so nervous because I came alone. I chatted with a lot of the girls for about 2 hours and they took me on a tour of their house. There's another event tomorrow night.

Can't wait!

lindz0722 01-24-2008 12:11 AM

Glad you had fun, FlaGirl!! :)

I'm glad you have the opportunity to see firsthand that "popularity" of a chapter isn't everything, and it certainly is not the only indicator of a strong sisterhood.

KSUViolet06 01-24-2008 12:34 AM

It's great that you had a good time. At the end of the day, it's the GIRLS that make a chapter, not how "popular" it is. And really, "popularity" is relative. It varies depending on who you ask. It's also something that could change from year to year. And it does not indicate how strong the sisterhood is. I'm glad you can see that.

FSUZeta 01-24-2008 09:34 AM

popular schmopular. you had fun, liked the girls, they seemed excited to see you-that's what matters!

have fun tonight!

SigKapAngel767 01-24-2008 11:48 AM

Sisterhood trumps popularity anyday. Popularity won't pick you up in the middle of the night if you've had too much to drink at the bar and you know you can't drive home. But Sisterhood would be there in two shakes of a lamb's tail.

Hayley2007 01-24-2008 01:32 PM

Awww congrats! Good luck tonight!

Ah! I love this!! :D
And it's soooo true FlaGirl, take note. Just because you're popular doesn't mean you'll be happy, and just because a chapter seems popular doesn't mean that they're not covering a whole bunch of internal unrest. Go with your gut!

That last bit is especially true. A chapter on my campus was really popular but I was always hearing about their internal drama - everything from stealing a sister's boyfriend to eating disorders, hazing, you name it. My chapter wasn't so popular but I ended up living with one of my littles my senior year and our chapter just felt pretty tight in comparison to the others on campus. Bravo for keeping an open mind and looking for what's important in a sorority!

FlaGirl07 01-25-2008 12:46 AM

OK So i got back from the second event a little while ago and it was great! Bids will be given out soon so I'll be all anxious until then. I feel really good about it so far, but you never know what may happen. I love their house and I can definitely see myself tied to these ladies for life.

3 days til I know!

FSUZeta 01-25-2008 08:52 AM

so glad to hear that you had a good time-again!

Thetagirl218 01-25-2008 07:17 PM

I can't wait to hear more!!

twinkle555 01-27-2008 02:27 AM

You sound EXACTLY like I did in MY rush thread 4 years ago! I was doing spring recruitment with just one sorority that I ended up absolutely loving. After like a week of events and feeling really at home with the girls, it was so hard not to freak out and wonder if they felt the same!

My best advice is to do hamework, hang out with friends, do whatever it takes to keep yourself from sitting around worrying about whether or not you'll get a bid--otherwise you'll go nuts!

Best of luck to you!

I'm so afraid I'm not going to get a bid and I keep running the last week through my head trying to remember my every move and word with these girls...The ones I met all made subtle comments about how I've made a good impression and everything, but I still have this nagging feeling...

Did anyone else feel this way during rush?

um, yes! I think that's just the nature of it, to have insecurities--good luck m'dear!

FSUZeta 01-27-2008 10:22 AM

definately felt that way, and i would be surprised if everyone (even the most put together looking girl) doesn't feel that way too! hang out with friends, do your school work, get some exercise and try not to fret too much.

FlaGirl07 01-27-2008 11:42 PM

So I just wanted to update those that were interested...I can now edit my story to include ALL the details because I got a phone call tonight and I was extended a BID!
