Cuff links?

Sooo this is probably the most random thing ever, but I get all of my advice from GC! :-P How do men wear cuff links if their shirt has buttons by the wrists already? Do they just take the buttons out? I'm so confused by this.

And another one...would you sport fraternity cuff links? I think they're pretty sweet...

Men wear cuff links with a french cuff dress shirt. There are no buttons on the cuffs.

I gave my husband a nice pair of monogrammed cuff links whne we got married. He wore them at the wedding and wears them at business meetings.

SigmaChiCard 01-19-2008 12:24 PM

Probably the coolest gift for being in a wedding I've ever received is a set of monogrammed cufflinks. Those were normal, but i think the weired the better

As above, we typically only wear them with French Cuffed shirts

i think these are pretty cool: http://www.thelandsalmon.com/images/..._cufflinks.jpg

I don't like cuff links with my fraternity letters or shield on them. I would personally want something a little more subtle, like a fraternity symbol that's doesn't SCREAM APhiA.

LucyKKG 01-19-2008 06:33 PM

Well, I know my guy doesn't have French cuffed shirts, so I guess that's out of the question.

I don't think the shield would scream APhiA (or Theta Chi, in his case). I think the letters would be too blatant, though. Even if I lived in an area where Greek life was more visible, I think a shield on a cuff link is pretty small and discreet.

DSTCHAOS 01-19-2008 06:39 PM

I love cuff links.

I have to admit that I LOL'd when I read the OP's question.

I do not like the fraternity cufflinks that I've seen.

Tom Earp 01-19-2008 06:39 PM

French cuffs were made for cuff links! That means, that there was extra shirt sleeves that were folded over to take them. I had a ton of very nice links and some old fashiomned pealed ones from my heretaqge!

Then there the convertable sleeves that had both buttons and slits in the cuffs. You could do either one.

Classy, yes!:(

They were worn normally on formal occasions or if you worked in the Rag business as I did with Macy's. Fashion was a prime thing. Funny thing, I always loved the plastic flower that I pinned on each morning!;)

Today that has gone by the way side as shortsleves are worn today! Well if they ever wear them.

Shields scream APhiA for those of us who are familiar with their shield. ;)

A symbol would be less subtle, depending on the symbol. Some symbols would be cheesy in cufflinks.

Because it was kind of a "cute" question. :) Did your boyfriend wonder this or did you?

[But as long as there are guys who wear ties with tshirts, there can be guys who try to wear cufflinks with button sleeves. :p]

LucyKKG 01-19-2008 06:46 PM

Ok, my response is gonna get a little weird, so just believe me. I have a traditional Norwegian dress that is worn with a blouse under it. I have cuff links that I wear with it, so I was trying to think of how that relates to shirts my boyfriend wears...haha ok, sorry for such a weird tangent.

Anyway, cuff links are out of the question now. Anyone got a good anniversary gift idea? (I totally won't be offended if you ignore that question. hehe)

I think I've actually seen a dress like that before. :) There are women's cufflink shirts but they are relatively rare. Does your blouse have buttons, too?

What types of things does he enjoy doing? How does he dress? Those types of questions go into what you should get him. Also I believe MSN is one of a few sites that have anniversary ideas. :)

LucyKKG 01-19-2008 07:01 PM

I love the random "stories" that MSN has! Haha so random.

Anyway, my blouse doesn't have any other fastening things. It has a kind of V-neck with a collar. The sleeves are attached with cuff link and the top is fastened with decorative pins.

He really likes history and reading, but he has a million books so I'm not going to go there. I would get him a watch, but he already has one.

SWTXBelle 01-19-2008 08:04 PM

Don't give up yet!

Get a shirt AND cuff links. Sooooo cool - I always think shirts with French cuffs are tres elegant!

ThetaPrincess24 01-19-2008 08:44 PM

i gave my husband a very nice (and quite expensive) monogrammed pen last year that came with it's own monogrammed case. He travels a lot on business so I thought that would be good and he liked it.

If you are looking for something out of the ordinary, you could get him one of those digital photo frames and put pictures of you two and his family or whatever in it. I'm doing that for my husband for either our anniversary (which is May 13th) or for valentine's day. I havent decided yet.

My husband as well as my father and father in law are always hard to shop for because they have everything. What they dont have, they have the financial means to just go out and buy it and usually that's what they do. To top it off all three can be picky!!! If your guy is hard to shop for in general I feel you!!

LucyKKG 01-19-2008 11:22 PM

A pen is a really good idea. My step dad is obsessed with fountain pens (and the like) so maybe I'll ask him about it.

I've already gotten him 2 regular picture frames, so I don't think I'll get him a digital one, too.

And about getting him a French cuff shirt + cuff links...that's a possibility, too! Do you see why I get my advice @ GC?? Haha, thanks guys and gals!

If you do decide to go with the shirt and cuff links idea, Donald Trump has a really nice collection of both. And you can always throw in a tie for good measure. Good luck.

macallan25 01-21-2008 06:39 AM

Do not buy a Donald Trump label shirt or cuff link set. Please.

Pens, how about a Mont Blanc? Very nice.

French Cuff shirts? Brooks Brothers, Thomas Pink, J. Press, etc.

Cuff Links? Brooks Brothers has nice ones. David Yurman makes nice cuff links for men. Burberry has some good ones as well. Generally all nice quality men's clothing stores have nice cuff links.

VandalSquirrel 01-21-2008 04:36 PM

It takes a Viking to Raze a Village

Since you live in an area with real stores ;) you could always cruise Nordstrom Rack for a shirt with French Cuffs since they have decent prices and a liberal return/exchange policy. If he isn't fortunate to be Norwegian like us, maybe you could get him a subtle Dale of Norway type sweater to wear when you're rocking the bunader.

You could also make or buy something off of CafePress, you know, one of those dorky shirts or mugs that says "Pray for me I am married to a Norwegian" but you could change it to dating ;)

LucyKKG 01-21-2008 05:23 PM

Haha he's Swedish, actually! I'm getting him Theta Chi shield cuff links and a French Cuff shirt. Hooray!

Oh well, I guess I should pray for you then. Swedes are just Norwegians with their brains knocked out.

Dale of Norway sweaters can be "snazzy" as cuteASAbug likes to say, plus Santa Cruz gets foggy. There are some nice red ones.

Oh come on, this screams Theta Chi http://cache.norwaysports.com/i/d/da...an-red-10144-f

Haha oh my. He would look ridiculous in that. He's 6'5". :-)

I did find some cuff links that are for a man's bunader, I'm not positive, but I think it was for Telemark, Nordland, and some other place. I've always liked the tradition of when you marry a Norwegian you can rock part of their bunader since you're uniting your families. If you want to PM me your bunader region I will do some investigating for you.

*IF* I marry who I am currently with we were joking about getting matching Dale of Norway sweaters for the engagement photos, and then submitting them to the alumni magazine (they print pictures of people's pets in vandal gear, haha!). I can't think of anything goofier to go with "Ms. Vandal Squirrel '05, '08 and Mr. Vandal Shyster '05, '08 announce their upcoming wedding and are pictured here with their Vandalized dogs, Stella and Adrian"

I'll be on the lookout for a "Pray for me I'm dating a Swede" item for you ;)

Ditto!!!

LucyKKG, I assume you know what your husband would like, but just make sure. I absolutely detest French cuffs and cufflinks with anything but formal wear. I would never wear them except when dressed formally, and I tend to get a negative impression when I see other men wearing them with business attire -- it gives an air of pretentiousness, in my opinion. I recognize that's not a universally shared (or rational :D ) bias; the point is that in my experience, guys either love them or detest them.

As for pens, I remember my wife getting me a really nice pen early on in our marriage (or maybe even when we were dating). It's probably still in a drawer somewhere, along with the pens I got as graduation presents -- I know I never used any of them. She thought it was a very nice gift (and I hope I acted like it was). I thought it was a complete waste of money. Give me a Sanford Uni-Ball Onyx that I don't care if I lose anyday. Now, she wouldn't even think of getting me a pen, because she knows now I wouldn't want it.

Now, having said all of that, I will admit that the buttons on my navy blazer have the Phi Mu Alpha coat-of-arms on them. You have to look closely to figure out that's what the design is, but I love 'em.

VERY cool! Hope he likes them! I always think French cuffs are so distinctive. :)

LucyKKG 01-22-2008 06:49 PM

Ah! He's not my husband! Lol sorry, I read that and got a little scared. Anyway, my family is from Vaaler county in Norway so I have a Solor bunad. I'm not getting him those kind of cuff links, though. I don't know if I could ever get him into a bunad...lol oh my.

Thanks for all of your help!
