another spring 2008 live recruitment thread!
so, i have been inspired by my twin sister, who goes to a different school than me and also has a recruitment thread on here somewhere, to write a live recruitment thread. i go to an east coast school where greek life is definitely present, but clearly not as much as in many southern schools. we have eight sororities:
alpha chi omega alpha phi chi omega delta delta delta kappa alpha theta phi sigma sigma sigma delta tau sigma kappa we have already gone through the first two days of rush, which were the open houses that gave us a chance to get a feel for the girls in each house. our rush takes place at night, because it's during classes, so our attire so far has been business casual, and i've worn business slacks both nights paired with a high-neck cream blouse with beading on the sleeves for the first night and a black sequined tunic top for the second night. you can definitely feel the nerves and tension amongst the girls. and on top of that we've been having to deal with very very cold weather! ok, so my next post will be about my first impressions of each house. i haven't come up with clever nicknames yet, so that will have to wait too. |
yay! :D
|
Good luck! I hope you get the invites you want!
|
I'm loving this new round of recruitment threads...I am needing the distraction from work right now.
Any chance you and your twin sister could become sorority sisters as well? |
good luck to you!
|
Yay! Another SDT thread!
Good luck! |
Oh I know what school you are at but I won't tell. Good luck!
|
i've decided to nickname the different sororities after disney movies (of course, in no specific order):
snow white cinderella belle mulan sleeping beauty pocahontas jasmine ariel and now, i finally begin my story. i went into rush with a two favorite sororities, based on reputation and girls i had met in them first semester, which is a definite result of having delayed rush. i tried to keep an open mind about the other six, knowing that there was the very real possibility that i had not discovered my favorite house yet. OPEN HOUSE, night 1 pocahontas- this was my first house, and therefore the one that i was the most nervous at. the girl who greeted me at the door was very friendly and outgoing, which made things a little bit easier, but i know that i tripped over my words a lot during my conversations with the various girls. this house has a stereotype at my school that definitely presented itself as i continued to meet it's members, but this stereotype is neither a bad one or a good one, more like a fact. one of the girls i talked to ended up knowing one of my best friends mothers, and for some reason talking to her put me at ease and allowed me to open up and really be myself. though i left this house feeling as if i ultimately would probably not accept a bid here, i really did want to come back for the next round and get to know more girls. belle- this house is like the third of the top three on our campus. the girls here were known to be pretty, sweet, and really down to earth. i definitely noticed that to be true, but there was also a very athletic component to this sorority that did not fit me at all. nevertheless, the girls could not have been friendlier. the conversation in belle did know flow as easily as it had in pocahontas, but i was still interested in what they had to say, and they seemed interested in me. i left planning on ranking belle in my top six and hopefully returning here for the next round. ariel- arielle is considered to be one of the not so popular houses on our campus. it is known to be one of, although not the, easiest houses to get into. upon entering arielle, i expected to meet a lot of unattractive awkward girls, but this was not the case. there was definitely a mix of girls here, a very diverse group. although there weren't many awkward pauses in the conversations i had with the girls at arielle, i cannot remember what we talked about at all. i was definitely ready to leave by the time the round ended and did not plan on coming back. jasmine- i knew very little about jasmine before visiting. the one thing i had heard was that jasmine got all of the cinderella rejects. it's not considered to be a top house on our campus, but it isn't a bottom house either. the girl who met me at the door was absolutely beautiful and very sweet too. i had a lot of fun having very comfortable casual conversations with the jasmine girls. again, the mix of girls was very diverse. out of all the houses i saw during open house rounds, jasmine was the most pleasant surprise, as i hadn't expected much from this house at all. jasmine definitely belonged in my top six. after the night ended, i felt a lot more comfortable with the rush process as a whole, and my ability to carry on conversations filled with small talk. however, i went to bed very nervous for the next night, as i had yet to visit either one of my top two houses going into rush. OPEN HOUSE, night 2 cinderella- for some reason, cinderella has always been a house i've wanted to be a part of, even before knowing anything about the chapter on our campus. i had met a few cinderella girls during first semester, as well as seen them out together at parties and bars, and they just seemed like a really fun close group of girls. cinderella is one of the top two houses at our school. they are known for having really beautiful (mostly blonde), wealthy party girls in there house. i have to say that cinderella met all of my expectations. i absolutely loved talking to each and every one of the girls in this house. they were all so friendly and bubbly, and we were easily able to carry on conversations that extended past school related topics (i.e. dorms, classes, major). when i left cinderella, this house was, without a doubt, my number one. snow white- snow white was another house i knew very little about. they had a very interesting and unique physical house, which i really liked. the girls i met here were really friendly and easy to talk to. we talked about everything from studying abroad in europe to shopping. i did learn that this house was unable to reach quota last year and resorted to COB. however, i still left snow white feeling that i would be happy to return. sleeping beauty- this house has the absolute worst reputation on our campus. there is even a cruel nickname attached to it. they never manage to reach quota and are by far the smallest house on campus. the girls here are known to be the ones that were unable to get in anywhere else. i also know a girl in my hall who is a sleeping beauty, and she is the most inappropriate, loud, obnoxious girls i have ever met. i did not like my visit at sleeping beauty any more than i had expected. everything bad i had heard proved to be true. because the house was so small, there were two pnm's to every sister, and i found myself more interested in chatting with the other pnm than the sister. also, i felt like the girls here were trying way too hard to impress is. it sort of came off as desperate and pathetic. sleeping beauty was at the very bottom of my list. mulan- this was the other house i went into rush expecting to love. this house is the other top house on our campus. the girls here are all very much wealthy city girls who love to party and go clubbing. they were all very stylish and seemed very confident. the girl who met me at the door ended up knowing one of my close friends, and we hit it off right away. she was very sweet and we had a lot to talk about because we were both from the same city (we live like 10 minutes away from each other). she never left my side the whole time i was at mulan, and i ended up sitting around chatting with a group of girls instead of switching girls and only talking to one sister at any given time. i felt very comfortable here and knew that it deserved the wonderful reputation it has on our campus. i left mulan feeling that it was tied for my number one with cinderella. i loved them both so much! at the end of the night, we had to rank our top six houses at number 1 and then the other two as 2 and 3. my list went as follows: 1.cinderella 1.mulan 1.pocahontas 1.jasmine 1.belle 1.snow white 2.ariel 3.sleeping beauty |
This isn't important, but I just wanted to point out that Anastasia isn't a Disney movie. Moving on.
I LOVE your descriptions. You're really honest without necessarily throwing chapters under the bus. Sometimes I wish people could just be completely honest, but we know holding back is obviously the best way to not offend and you're doing a great job! Keep it up! |
[quote=BabyPiNK_FL;1583828]This isn't important, but I just wanted to point out that Anastasia isn't a Disney movie. Moving on./quote]
you could always change anastasia to mulan.... but it's a common mistake i think because disney has so many animated movies about princesses that start with them living the hard life *well except maybe jasmine & mulan but they both go out on life changing events..but that's a whole other story** and then the princesses end up as royalty... so it's easy to see where eskimo made the mistake aahh working at disney for 6 months, really gets you in the know of EVERYTHING disney lol ;) |
While we're in the nit-picky mood, the Princess from The Little Mermaid's name is spelled Ariel, not Arielle.
I hope you get the invites that you want! |
anyways,
something i forgot to tell you.... GOOD LUCK!!!!! |

Is there really a need for GCers to say "Oh I know what school this is but don't worry, I won't say anything!" ? I mean, great that you know and all, but if I were a PNM posting a rush story, I'd be a little bit more hesitant in posting an honest rush experience if someone publicly said they knew what school I was at. We encourage the PNMs to be honest, but discreet, when posting rush stories. True, it doesn't take a genius to figure out which sorority is which if you're familiar with the campus Panhellenic (made clear in NLH's rush thread), but I just think it's unnecessary to let everybody know that YOU KNOW what school she's at. I think it's better if we just kept that knowledge to ourselves. |
I LOVE your code names! Haha I have a sister who's obsessed with Disney princesses, so I should tell her!
Good luck! |

ok, i've made all the changes relating to the princesses names. and i still cannot believe i didn't know that anastasia isn't a disney princess, but oh well.
last night we got our schedules for the next round, which is skit round. although the maximum number of houses we're allowed to visit during this round is six, they told us that a lot of the times people end up with three or four at this point. so, of course, i was really nervous to open my schedule when my rc handed it to me. but, we i eventually did, i found out that i would be returning to pocahontas, ariel, cinderella, mulan, jasmine, and snow white. i was thrilled to have a full schedule and even more excited when i realized that that schedule included cinderella and mulan! i was a little sad, though not completely surprised, about being cut from belle. for skit round i decided to wear a silver blue knee-length and three quarter sleeve silk dress and black knee-high boots, even though it was still freezing out. SKIT ROUND pocahontas- i was really happy that i was going back here. even though i still don't completely expect to end up here in the end, i have so much fun going to this house and visiting with the girls. unfortunately, i did not like the girls i spoke to during this round as much as i did the girls i met the first night. one of the girls made zero effort to keep the conversation going and genuinely seemed as if she did not want to be there. however, their skit was adorable! i really enjoyed it and laughed a lot. when i left pocahontas, i decided that even though i didn't enjoy it as much as i had last time, that i really liked the girls i had met in pocahontas on the first night, and i wanted to give this house another chance. ariel- i had not been thrilled with this house during open house round. but this time i really enjoyed speaking with the girls. they were all really friendly, and i even ended up finding out that i'm in a class with one of them. i found myself questioning my reasoning for putting this house in my bottom two at the last post office and realized that much of it was purely superficial. their skit was very clever and really funny. though i wasn't sure that i wanted to rank them as one of my top four, i did leave ariel not completely writing them off this time. cinderella- i am truly in love with cinderella! i talked to a whole new group of girls here today, and i loved every single one of them again. the conversations were very casual and easy, almost as if i was just sitting down chatting with some of my close friends. many of the girls i met the other night came over to greet me as well. their skit was most definitely one of my favorites of the day. the song they sang was very cute and catchy and watching them perform just really made me want to be a cinderella. i left this house in awe, and a little worried about how attached i was getting to cinderella so early on. every single girl i talked to who visited cinderella today is in love with this house. mulan- i know i just said this about the last house, but i am in love with mulan too! i felt so comfortable here as well. i met a lot of new people and got to spend some time with my friend's friend, who is just really making me feel welcome in mulan. she introduced me to some of her friends in the house, and they were all really really sweet girls as well. the style of the mulan girls matches mine more so than that of any other house. the one drawback about mulan is that there a few girls i know who have legacy in this house, and are therefore guaranteed a bid, who i very much dislike. i do not like the idea of being in a pledge class with them at all. nevertheless, mulan very much impressed me with their skit. it was definitely my other favorite one of the day. these girls just seems so fun and close with one another. i really want to be a mulan. and am a little worried about how much i love this house too. ahhhhh! jasmine- once again, the girls i met at jasmine were wonderful and sweet. the conversations were really comfortable and not at all boring or generic, as many rush convos tend to be. i feel like i have a lot in common with the girls of jasmine, and i would love to hang out with them, be friends with them, and maybe even be their sister. their skit did not impress me that much though. i really didn't find it that funny. for a second it had me doubting how much i like jasmine, but it is the girls not the skit that make up the house, after all. i really hope i come back here next round. snow white- i was exhausted by the time i got to this house. as horrible as it sounds, i could not make myself try my hardest here. the girls were nice enough, and i did have some really good interesting conversations. their skit wasn't bad either. but, nothing about this house really stood out to be. i just can't see myself really being a snow white. so, this house went to the bottom of my list after today. at the end of the night we had another post office ranking and my list went as follows: 1.cinderella 1.mulan 1.pocahontas 1.jasmine 2.ariel 3.snow white tomorrow night we get our schedules and then monday is philanthropy round. i'm really nervous about losing either cinderella or mulan, but all i can do now is wait and try not to stress out about it too much. wish me luck! |

Sounds like you are having fun! Good luck with the rest of your recruitment! |

Yeah, I wanted to second the thing about legacies not necessarily getting a bid. Plus, they may not click with the chapter at that school even though their mom/sister/grandmother was an XYZ at a different school. It's not a guarantee, so don't worry!
|
Based on your descriptions, it sounds like you'd be happy to return to any of the chapters.
Also, about the legacy thing at Mulan, no, they are not guaranteed bids, but even if the Mulan legacies that you don't like DO end up there, don't discount the chapter because of your potential pledge class if you like everything else about Mulan. Good luck with tomorrow's invites! |

Best of luck with tomorrow's invitations. |
This fall when I rushed, Zeta cut 6 legacies! And our pledges classes aren't extremely big. Zeta had 29, I believe and we had 30.

Being a legacy doesn't neccessarily guarantee these girls a bid to Mulan. |
It also doesn't guarantee that they want to be in "Mulan" either:)
|
i just want to clear up the legacy thing. one of my good friends, who also has legacy at mulan and another sorority, was told that she has a guarantee of getting a bid there. as far as whether or not the two girls i was referring to want to be in mulan, i do know that it is currently their first choice.

i wanted to say something about jasmine-you noticed that their skit was not on the same level as some of the other chapters. maybe you could use that observation to your advantage. if you are invited back to and choose to attend the next jasmine party, you could diplomatically mention that you enjoy acting and look forward to being able to participate in skits when you join a sorority. you just might be what jasmine is looking for! |
My word of advice is you that you probably would enjoy being in all six. I really think you just wamt tp be invited to the movie. Goodluck
|
At my dughters school, where legacies are honored, they supposely cut legacies if they are not going to offer them a bid after slide show day (2 day) I know this happened to several of the daughters friends. Some did not want to be in the mother sorority and were glad they cut them early on so they could 'voulenteer' that information to other groups they were interested in . Another reason I think legacies are honored their is national sororities have only been at the school 30 years. The last few years they could only have in-house leagcies so it was a big deal.
|
I know at my school unless you don't like the legacy or vice versa, you bid them. (Although this isn't something that we go and say to them during recruitment). We don't get a lot of legacies and are very appreciative when we can get some. This year we took every single one, and stole one from another group as well. Another chapter on my campus also took all of theirs as well. The majority of the legacies of the other chapter's also went to their respective legacy chapters.
Obviously this is not the standard at every school, and at some schools this simply can not be done, there are too many legacies. But thankfully it's something we're able to do and I think it's very cute. I suspect there are other schools as well who are also able to do it, which may be why the legacies in this story seem so confident. (I do agree though, if someone told them they were guaranteed a bid, there is foul play afoot.) |
no word yet

i wrote this last night, but it wouldn't let me post it for some reason:
today was philanthropy round. we found out last night which houses we were going back to for this round. when i got my schedule, i immediately scanned for mulan and cinderella, and was in shock when i realized the cinderella was not on my list. i seriously LOVED this house and every single girl in it i spoke with. i could not figure out what had happened and why they had cut me. it really hurt that they did not want me to be their sister. but, after venting with my friend, who was also cut from one of her top choices, i decided to be happy that i still had mulan, which i loved just as much as cinderella, and a full schedule. the other houses i visited for philanthropy round were snow white, pocahontas, and ariel. PHILANTHROPY ROUND snow white- the first girl who met me at the door here today wasn't very interesting. she took me on a quick tour of the house and was friendly and everything, but she didn't really make me want to be a part of snow white. i also had a hard time keeping the conversation going with the second girl i spoke with while we did the craft. BUT, i absolutely loved talking to the last girl i met today. and i also got to say hi to another snow white i had met on the first night and really really liked as well. however, i still left knowing that although i enjoyed myself at snow white in the end, there were two houses i wanted more, and so i would not be ranking snow white as a top choice. ariel- every single girl i talked to in ariel was so sweet and really fun to talk to. i had such an easy time carrying on conversations with these girls about really random things. i had a really fun time here today, and the hour went by pretty quickly. now that i'm typing this i realize that i probably should have ranked ariel higher on my list than snow white, but i feel like as hard as i try to keep an open mind, the sorority's reputations are still having some influence on my decision making. pocahontas- i found out that my twin sister accepted a bid from pocahontas at her school last night! so that definitely made me a little more interested in considering pocahontas at my school, because i think it would be really cute if we ended up in the same sorority. i had always liked the pocahontas girls. they all seem really outgoing and fun and easy to talk to. i did, however, not recognize a girl i had met during open house round and really liked today, and i think she may have been offended. i really hope that doesn't mess my chances up at pocahontas. i really really want to return for pref night! mulan- i cannot say this enough: I LOVE THIS HOUSE! every single girl i talked to in mulan today was so sweet to me. they all told me that they had heard so much about me from my friend, and that they were really glad to meet me. all if of them seemed so interested in making sure i was happy and felt welcome. i want these girls to be my sisters so badly. i'm a little worried because during one of my conversations with two of the girls, my twin came up, and they asked what sorority she was in at her school, and then later they asked what houses i had seen today, so i really hope they don't cute me because they think i'll end up joining the same sorority as my sister. i REALLY want to be in mulan. i hope that came across, and i really hope to return her for pref round. i would be absolutely crushed if they cut me. we then went to post office to rank our houses. when i got there, i was still a little nervous about the whole situation with mulan and pocahontas. but the girl i spoke to on panhel says that really shouldn't affect anything and not to worry about it. i ranked my houses: 1.mulan 1.pocahontas 2.snow white 3.ariel tomorrow we have a break from rushing. and wednesday is pref round. i am such a mix of excitement and nerves right now. |

I have a question - why is your twin going with you to rush events when she just recently pledged (within a day) at another school? This does not compute.
|
I think she means the subject of her twin came up, not that her actual twin was there. I THINK - it's the only thing that makes sense.
|
This is what I understood, too.

OHHH! I get it - Sorry, now back to our regularly scheduled programming:)
|
Haha, that's what I understood too, otherwise we might have a RITY situation on our hands again ;)
|
yess, haha, i meant that the topic of my twin sister came up. she is many states away from me. and the only reason i told them these things was because those exact questions were asked, and i didn't want to come off as standoffish or as if i was hiding anything by not answering.
