That'll be the end of them if true.

jmagnus 01-22-2008 01:54 AM

That's just nuts. NO ONE should have to do that!

jmagnus 01-22-2008 01:54 AM

Students have reported to 10News that the fraternity asked pledges to perform push-ups on broken glass. The cuts the students suffered later may have become infected with staph.

Whatever happened to potato chips? It's not supposed to BE broken glass, idiots!

Tom Earp 01-22-2008 03:32 PM

Is this anything new at Fraternity Houses?

I know that the President of our house corporation was so mad when he visited the house, he blew a cork over the condition of new house and how it was taken care of.

This is nothing new as I have visited many houses where the same room conditions were the same.

Boy the parents get really upset when they visit.

But, if a place is not as clean as this states, there is a major problem.

Pay to have the house truely cleaned.

Update February 5, 2008: Pi Kappa Alpha suspended, membership review scheduled, etc.

http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=54205

Brief excerpts from article:

The University of Tennessee has rescinded registration of Pi Kappa Alpha, known as Pike, as a university organization, and the national organization has put the UT-K chapter on administrative suspension, following an investigation into allegations of hazing.

Student Judicial Affairs has also presented the chapter with charges of hazing and violation of a state or federal law. The chapter entered a guilty plea on the charges.

The moves stem from allegations that arose last month after three students fell ill, reportedly from staph infections. Fraternity members allegedly forced pledges to perform push-ups on bottle caps or broken glass.

. . . Justin Buck, the national executive director for Pike, said fraternity officials will conduct one-on-one interviews with each of the 100-plus Knoxville members to determine which students should be allowed to stay in the fraternity.

He said they plan to be on campus Feb. 17 through Feb. 20.

. . . They'll also turn over their findings to the university.

UT spokeswoman Karen Collins said that is when the university will decide how to move forward with its investigation and disciplinary process. . . .

Tom Earp 02-05-2008 03:56 PM

This in a word is "stupidity"!

They will be lucky if they are not sued or arrested!

KenUDiggit 02-14-2008 03:50 PM

What do you guys think the final word will be after the review?

Just like the feces in the toilet is supposed to be bananas. :p Spike Lee knew it!

This is why hazing laws cover everything because idiots can't be left to their own devices and we can't spot idiots until they show themselves.

draped-up 02-14-2008 06:01 PM

i hope that isnt true for their sake!! they are a very strong Pike chapter and i dont think they could be that stupid!

This needed repeating. And bolding.

I think one of the comments to the article says it best. It's an ongoing investigation and by going public like this the media is going to unfairly influence it. Until then, they're publishing hearsay, gossip, and most likely, slander.

Quote:

I find it irresponsible to report possible hazing when this investigation is currently underway. This station knows full and well that this report will prompt parents to contact the University and pressure them to take action, especially when it could influence the investigation and their decision. I personally know many of these young men and they are gentlemen who do many good things in this community, such as hosting Pike's Presents and other Philanthropic events. If these men are punished because of pressure from the community rather than actual fault, it is a shame that you should have to answer to. Please do not publish a story on your station if it could harm these young men while still presumed innocent, especially if you are not going to discuss any of the good they have done for our community as well.

KenUDiggit 02-17-2008 03:31 AM

UT seems to be lacking in terms of nice looking houses(besides Phi Sig,Fiji and EX.) Does UT get a lot of support from the University?

TNmomof5 02-29-2008 01:02 PM

I think the investigation will find that the hazing reported is only a little of actually what happened. They are a very strong chapter, I wish them the best.

TNmomof5 02-29-2008 01:05 PM

Ken, UT frat houses are in a state of being remodeled. Several as you mentioned are already complete and are gorgeous. They should be starting to build the sorority houses in a year or so. They already have the land.

Sickening

Judging from the information in following story links, something happened there that was determined to have been of a hazing nature as well as a violation of Code of Conduct:

Pike speaks out about hazing
It was about building brotherhood
That's what UT junior Rett Hixson, a Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity brother, says about the hazing that happened at the Pike house back in January.

That brotherhood is now a little shaken, with the chapter suspended, on probation, and with more sanctions possible.

"Someone was bound to get caught for it, and it just so happened to be us," Hixson said.
http://www.wbir.com/news/local/story.aspx?storyid=55827

This part I just have a rather hard time with:
"There were no push-ups on broken glass, there were no bottle caps involved," he said. "These are all long-standing rumors about our chapter, and I'm very anxious to dispel those rumors."

Instead, Hixson says some of the pledges were forced to do "lateral ab movements" on the bathroom floor. They're often called planks or "bows and toes," because the move is performed while resting on one's elbows and toes."
Planks are an exercise that is very common to see and do at a gym. Yet I have never seen or heard of someone getting a staph infection from it.

Well I'll be, they mentioned you bows.

bows and toes (or the bridge) is pretty common. A certain chapter at UofA is rumored to do it on glass or bottle caps, but I don't know any truth to it.

upandcoming09 04-04-2008 08:07 AM

i wouldnt have done push ups on broken glass in the 1st place.
