What's your Minimum Wage?

Hey there,
I was just reading a post in newbie's thread about really crappy pay. I know minimum wage in Canada varies province to province, so I'm assuming it varies state to state as well.

What's the minimum wage in your state?

In Ontario, it's $6.85. But I'm pretty sure every job will start you at 7 bux cause the 15 cents doesn't make too much of a difference to them. I think only McDonald's starts at $6.85. What's it like where you live?

SSS1365 07-06-2001 09:28 AM

Dude, I'm jealous! I only make minimum since I work on campus... So I only get $5.15 an hour! Why is it so much worse here than in other places???

gphi2k 07-06-2001 09:32 AM

One quick thing I should point out. I live in Canada. And our dollar is crappy compared to the American dollar. So our minimum wages will appear higher. Think of it this way....$5.15 US an hour is equivilant to about $7.50 an hour Canadian. I hope that makes you feel better http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif .

Now I'M depressed!

Corbin Dallas 07-06-2001 09:37 AM

US min. wage is $5.15/hour. It's that way across the board, even though some states could have a higher minimum. It can't be lower. Of course if you make tips, you get less hourly pay, but you have to average at least minimum wage with tips. I think I heard the min. is going up again. Anyone know anything about this?

LOL, there's me being an airhead again! I didn't even know that it was the same everywhere in the US, and then I didn't even think about the fact that that was stuff from Canada!

I hope it goes up again, I am struggling with just $5.15/hour, but I don't have time for an off-campus job!

If min. wage goes up though, inflation will go up. When it went up from $4.25 an hour, prices went up at nearly all of the places in my town that paid min. wage to their employees, causing everyone who shopped there to spend more money, and so on and so forth. I don't know that min. wage increases really help anyone, and I'd wager to say it hurts people that make more than that, because they have to spend more money without a wage increase. I guess that's a little bit of my old DQ boss coming out though. He ALWAYS griped about how much he had to pay us, and how poor he was. Since I started at DQ in '95 to now, he's had 3 pretty new trucks...

True... I just wish I made above minimum http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Interesting about the 3 new trucks though...

Hmmm all the HR signs at work state minimum wage at $6.75, maybe that's just California, I don't know.

juniorgrrl 07-06-2001 01:33 PM

Its 5.15 here. I'm making a whopping 5.40/hr. When I figured out how much gets taken out for taxes (which i'll get back) and social security (which I won't get back, nor will I get credits for), I take home about 87% of my paycheck. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

At my campus job, I do phone surveys for the dpt. of economics. We get a .50 raise for each month we stay on (because people flake out from the mononoty of it). So I make about 6.50/hr to call people. Pretty cool http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I have no idea how it's set up, but I guess maybe it's because the cost of living in CA is pretty high.

Siobhan 07-06-2001 02:18 PM

In British Columbia minimum wage is $7.50/hour.

For my summer internship, I'm making $10.25/hour, which will hopefully soon be more, but I only take home about 75% of my paycheck. Isn't it wierd how the more you earn, the less you get, at least percentage-wise?

6.25

Hootie 07-07-2001 12:51 AM

I think minimun wage here in Nebraska is 5.15 but it might be 5.50. I am not sure. I make 5.50 an hour plus commission though, so generally I average about 9 to 10...16 dollars on one paycheck.
I know 5.50 sounds low but most places around here will generally hire at 7.50 an hour.

Lots-a-Heart 07-07-2001 03:51 PM

In NOva Scotia I believe that it is a whopping $5.65

Yay for tax-exempt employers! I could be working at a place and making 2 dollars more an hour, but I would be taking the same amount home, and I'm actually very happy not to be working retail this summer.

AXiD Sweetie 11-06-2004 02:33 AM

What is min. wage everywhere now??? At home (yakima, washington) I was making 7.75 an hour. (Although technically, min. wage was 7.16.) My boss just likes me :-)

IowaStatePhiPsi 11-06-2004 02:52 AM

shit- last time I had a job that paid minimum wage I was 14 years old. worked that for 3 months then quit to work for a lawyer for $6.50/hr
started at HyVee at the same rate 2 years later, am at... $8.50/hr now and all I ever do is stand around, socialize, and drink starbucks. I only bust ass when I need to. Hmm- that reminds me, Tgiving and Xmas are coming up, time to ramp up my productivity so I can get a quarter raise.

In general Congress typically waits until the prevailing wage is well above the minimum, and then adjust the minimum to be slightly therebelow. This minimises the economic disruption an actual minimum wage would cause.

Jill1228 11-06-2004 04:36 AM

Back in the Eastern US does the wait staff still make only $2.14 an hour plus tips? (It was that way when I lived in VA and moonlighted as a cocktailer)

In Washington State, you make $7.16 an hour plus tips

smiley21 11-06-2004 07:57 AM

an Amendment here was just passed to raise the min. wage to $6.15

AGDee 11-06-2004 09:16 AM

It varies greatly by state and two states do have minimum wage laws below the federal minimum.

Here's a link for details: minimum wage map

Lady Pi Phi 11-06-2004 10:10 AM

The minimum wage in Ontario is now $7.15. It's been like that for a while now. I believed it was raised in 2003.

AGDee 11-06-2004 10:18 AM

As of today's exchange rate, that would $5.96/hour US.

PoohsHoneyBee 11-06-2004 12:45 PM

At my convenient store job I get $5.25 and at my computer lab job I get $5.67. It's about 30 hours a week and I still struggle!

aephi alum 11-06-2004 01:13 PM

$7.10 per hour here.

Waitstaff can be paid $5.02/hr on the grounds that they make up the difference in tips, but only for the hours that they're actually waiting tables. For time that they spend preparing food, washing dishes, general clean-up, being a host/hostess, serving take-out customers, etc. the employer must pay at least $7.10/hr.

It is $6.75 an hr. I took a holiday job at target to offset Christmas expenses and it is obscene the little amt they pay and the grunt work they make you do

Glitter650 11-06-2004 10:57 PM

Here in San Francisco minimun wage is 8.50 I believe (not sure about the cents, but it's around there. I went to Hooters the other day and they have added a tax or fee or whatever they want to call it onto their food so they can pay it to their wait staff

preciousjeni 11-06-2004 11:44 PM

Minimum wage is horrible for the economy. :(

ETA: I see people talking about working in restaurants. These people aren't covered under the rules for minimum wage. Just FYI.
