Thirtysomethings come forth!

It seems that the majority of people who post on here are actives, but I was wondering how many on here are from "my" era? I'm talking about the days of gummy bracelets, acid washed jeans, big hair and large shoulder pads. Yes, children, we're talking about the '80's! Any thirtysomethings out there?

AlphaXiGirl 04-18-2001 09:59 AM

Here I am!!!! Okay, so I'm "late" 80's but 80's none-the-less.

PenguinTrax 04-18-2001 10:04 AM

Pledged as a sophomore in '82. Queen of all that was magenta...punk hair...B-52's...the whole 9 yards.

Have my 20-year high school reunion this year. http://members.nbci.com/burke1981

Ok, so I did all that stuff in high school, but I'm almost 30 (unfortunately!).

royalbluelady 04-18-2001 01:49 PM

I feel the same way. I was wondering how many 'OLD HEADS' were here. I pledged the fall of '88. Those were the days...

You know you're an 80's person when....Hooters are a rock band, not a restaurant. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

Pledged as a sophomore FALL 86!!

tcsparky 04-21-2001 01:35 AM

Here I am- graduated high school '88. Loved early REM, B-52's, had lots of hair, shoulder pads, and loved guys in rock bands with long hair and earrings.

Miss friendship bracelets, Bon Jovi, and the crinkled look- to make up for not having time to iron!!!!

matthewg 04-22-2001 02:17 PM

another one in his early thirties here.... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
Cheers to all the other "old" guys around!

Shabbydo 07-05-2001 05:03 AM

Isn't life better in your 30's? Older and wiser now and yes I do remember a time when I couldn't decide what "color" to wear my hair. One week it's blue, the next week it's purple and my earrings could never ever be matching. LOL

I am a few years away from the 30's yet, but had to respond to the Hooters comment. THEY ROCK! (Benefits of having an older sister who is 32) and dont even get me started on The Outfield. "Josie's on a vacation far away, come around and talk it over." Gotta love it. Saw them live last summer. Rocked.

adduncan 12-15-2003 06:41 PM

The Official GC Resident GDI hit the big 3-5 this year.

Rushed at BU in 1987.

Still holding out for a bid one of these days. :D

HELL, YES!!! Life still throws you curve balls, but somehow, you don't freak out as much--problems can be dealt with and every little thing doesn't feel liike the world ending.

And my spiked-and-permed rock-star hair was a very tasteful shade of eggplant, thankyouverymuch. And I had blue eye contacts.

Pledged Spring '87 of my sophomore year at FSU.

AlphaSigOU 12-15-2003 07:41 PM

Pledged Alpha Sigma Phi in January 1984, initiated in April 1984.

Who can forget... hurrying through chapter meetings at Gamma Theta (University of Miami) chapter Friday nights to run over to the Rathskeller (the student bar) and watch Miami Vice? Feathered hair, narrow ties, parachute pants, Members Only jackets? Damn... I'm really showing my age! :)

Peaches-n-Cream 12-15-2003 07:44 PM

Hi :)

Sistermadly 12-15-2003 08:00 PM

Count me in! I missed going to the grocery store last night just so I could watch "Arena" (a Duran Duran video) on Much More Music last night.

(And John Taylor is STILL my future husband!)

AOIIsilver 12-15-2003 08:30 PM

Good grief

You know you are a woman of the 80's when you know every word to "Let the River Run" and "I will survive."

Am I the only one who actually misses jelly shoes?

Silver

ETA: fixes to my horrible spelling

James 12-15-2003 10:12 PM

What are jelly shoes?

Sistermadly 12-15-2003 10:18 PM

These are jelly shoes

http://www.santee.k12.ca.us/dunnigan...ics/jelly1.jpg

They came in a variety of colours.

SmartBlondeGPhB 12-15-2003 10:20 PM

Don't miss jelly shoes, but I do know the words to I Will Survive....

Pledged in Fall 1987

*sigh* Though I'm a few years away from 30, I remember jelly shoes. I had pairs in pink and purple.

They also used to make my feet STANK.

AOIIsilver 12-15-2003 10:40 PM

jelly shoes

My dad, a football referee, tried to teach me how to place kick. I tried it in jelly shoes and broke my toe nail off my big toe.

But, they were cool in summer, and we would wear socks with them in winter...I know, totally geeky!

AlphaSigOU, Mr. Silver STILL has his Members Only jacket!

CatStarESP4 12-16-2003 07:17 PM

Next month, I will celebrate my 31st birthday. I am still adjusting to being a 30 something. I miss my 20s a lot!

As child (I was about 7 when the 80s started)/preteen/teenager of the 1980s, I miss that decade (Like, Omigod!). I like to listen to the music from the 80s!

BTW, does anyone remember slinky jewelry?

When I was 11, there was a white chocolate candy shaped like a skull and if you push the eye sockets in, a strawberry flavored liquid oozes out (I apologize if I gross you out with the description). Does anybody remember that or was just a New England thing?

Shelacious 12-16-2003 07:28 PM

What y'all know about Duran Duran???!!! :D

I am a child of the 80s and attended college in the 90s. I am a thirtysomething (but too young to watch the show of the same name with it was on tv).

Steeltrap 12-16-2003 07:31 PM

About to leave the 30somethings

Next year to join the 40somethings. :D

Wasn't in a GLO in college (1982-86).

The stars of thirtysomething are now forty and fiftysomethings. :)

Pledged Fall 87 as a junior at CSU

phisigduchesscv 12-17-2003 02:04 AM

Definite child of the 80's, graduated high school in 85.

Want to talk about feeling old. One of our city councilmen sent out a flyer asking for donations to purchase new uniforms for the band since the uniforms were older then most of the band members. At first I was like, what is he talking about, I remember when those uniforms were bought back in 84. Then it hits me that makes the uniforms 17 years old and they are older then most of the band members. ARGH!!!! ;)

Speaking of Duran Duran,

I saw their Video"White Lines" with Grandmaster Flash last Night on MTV2's Old School Hip Hop.

RACooper 12-17-2003 03:29 PM

Well I guess I fall in this category now...... sigh

I graduated HS in 93, ended up doing a number of class B deployements through the reserves (3-6 month tours or courses), then decided to get an education (well my knees decided :)).

So i'm 30 and I'm an active (last year) in my chapter...... a little akward sometimes, but I'm getting by ;)

I LOVE JELLY SHOES!!! where on earth did you find that picture??? in the first grade, i was playing on the playground (otherwise known as the church parking lot), ran through a grassy area....and then back on to the pavement and proceeded to slide across the pavement on my knees. one of the 8th grade boys had to carry me upstairs to the office to get it cleaned up...and i still have the scar to prove it! would you believe that i never stopped wearing them....lol...and going to catholic school, you always had to wear knee highs. imagine jelly shoes with knee high socks...lol

did you know that jelly bracelets are back?? i got some for my friends!

AGDee 12-18-2003 12:07 AM

You are all forgetting the Flashdance look. Cut up sweatshirt so one shoulder was bare and the leg warmers over the VERY tight designer jeans.

High school class of '83, pledged in January '84, Initiated April '84.

40 something is coming too quickly!

Dee

Munchkin03 12-18-2003 12:35 AM

Even though I'm still a few years from 30, I remember jelly shoes! I never had any 'cause my mommy thought they were tacky, but I wanted some so badly.

Tom Earp 12-18-2003 12:35 AM

KRose, I find this thread very offensive against Maturer People of all ages!

Damn Kids! Boo To you!:D

CutiePie2000 12-18-2003 12:51 AM

I had to chime in and represent. I graduated H.S. in 1988 and if I had a magic wand, I would have pledged in Sept 1988. Alas, 'twas not to be. But I am just chiming in to echo the Duran Duran sentiments (and let's not forget Howard Jones, The Thompson Twins, Talk Talk, etc.)

AOIIsilver 12-18-2003 10:53 AM

Flashdance look

Oh, good grief!

Remember those so tight jeans that actually had zippers in the legs so that you could get them over your feet?

Old...school... HIP HOP?!?!? The frack? Even though I think it rates as one of the coolest covers ever, their version is SO not hip hop.
