penn state spring sorority rush 08

hi-
I am currently a sophomore, looking to pledge a sorority this spring. However, I know nothing about any sororities that participate in spring rush, and how to go about getting involved. Any help would be appreciated.
thanks

Your best bet is to start with the office of greek life ...

here's the link to the Penn State Panhellenic web site ... even though it refers to
fall 2007 recruitment .. these are the contact you'd need to make..

http://php.scripts.psu.edu/clubs/up/...ecruitment.php

good luck!!

Ooo Ooo!!! A Penn State thread!!! I don't know anything about spring rush details, but if you go through, please consider posting your story, I'd love to follow one from Happy Valley! :) :)

Megan51088 01-02-2008 04:03 PM

Thanks for the advice. I had tried emailing one of them earlier this year, but never recieved a response.

Do you go to Pennsylvania State University - the main campus or the other campuses? If you go to the main campus, there are 20 NPC sororities there out of the total 26 making Greek Life pretty big at your university. I would suggest contacting those in charge of Greek Life at your school. Do a search at your school's website and read about some information about sororities and get in touch with someone in charge of recruitment, I am sure they would be able to inform you of more about recruitment in the springtime.

I go to the main campus, and I tried to contact the people listed on the website, but have yet to recieve any response. (It's been a decent amount of time). I hope it works out, but I am beginning to think it won't.

Well then walk into the Greek Life office at the Hub (is that still what they call it?) and ask about it. That's what the folks in that office are there for...

They might be in a "silence" time when sorority memebers are not allowed to communicate with rushees. Don't take it personally. Watch for signs about rush and postings on the Greeklife website.:)

Hayley2007 01-02-2008 04:12 PM

I agree, but don't give up on hearing from them as well because if you emailed them after school was on holiday break and haven't heard back from them, it may be because they haven't or won't check their emails until they get back from break. I don't know, just a thought. But yes, go into the office for Greek Life and inquire in person.

Megan51088 01-02-2008 04:13 PM

how do they do spring recruitment, if they can't talk to you? im just curious

Actually, since Penn State has formal rush in the fall and only groups doing informal will be holding events in the spring, it's more likely you're running into communication gaps between old and new officers at both the chapter and panhellenic levels if elections just took place at the end of last semester. And it was holiday break. Again, walk into the GLO in person and talk to the folks there to see if they have info. on the groups holding spring events, they may be starting in the next few weeks.

None of us necessarily know that.

But you know who does? The staff in the Greek Life Office.

Oh, don't be nervous about talking to the people in the office, hopefully their goal will be to make sure you have the best experience you can and want to join the greek community. Plus, think of it as good practice for when you walk into the rush parties. ;)

nittanyalum 02-06-2008 02:13 PM

Hey, where's my little Penn Stater??

Any updates?

We need more Happy Valley-ians on here.

honeychile 02-06-2008 02:38 PM

Hmm... haven't heard from petals recently, either. Maybe she would know.

Hey, you came back! Sorry it's not with better news. And no, I'm sure greek life doesn't "hate" you, I just don't remember spring rush being that big there. How many chapters did you go to events for?

If you haven't gone through yet, try fall formal rush, you'll get to see all 20ish chapters then. And if you aren't up for that, then don't worry about it, at least you tried, and god knows there's plenty of other stuff to do at Penn State so you can still get really involved even if you aren't greek. Chin up and good luck!

Megan51088 02-15-2008 05:23 PM

Haha, yes I am back. I would have updated more, but I had trouble finding the post, with all the new posts. Spring rush wasn't that big, and I feel like that really hurt me. I was only able to make it to two events, for two different sororities. However, with one I got sick the one night, and since I couldn't go to their first event, I wasn't able to go to any of their others. And the other one just plain out rejected me.

I really wanted to go greek, but I know or at least I have heard that sororties look down on juniors pledeging. I feel liek that might make me akward.

I love Penn State I really do, but getting involved here is so hard!!! :(

I don't remember it being unheard of for a junior to get a bid, why not go through and see? If you only met 2 chapters, you haven't really given greek life there a try.

I admit it's a big campus, but there is PLENTY to do there, if you look/try. About 10% of the female population are in sororities, so 90% are doing something else, I'm sure you can find SOMEthing that interests you.
Activities

13% of men belong to 59 national fraternities; 10% of women belong to 31 national sororities. There are more than 600 groups on campus, including art, band, cheerleading, chess, choir, chorale, chorus, computers, dance, debate, drama, drill team, ethnic, film, forensics, gay, honors, international, jazz band, literary magazine, marching band, musical theater, newspaper, opera, orchestra, pep band, photography, political, professional, radio and TV, religious, social, social service, student government, symphony, and yearbook. Popular campus events include Late Night Penn State, Dance Marathon, and Distinguished Speaker Series.
Sports

There are 15 intercollegiate sports for men and 14 for women, and 15 intramural sports for men and 14 for women. Facilities include 6 gyms, 5 swimming pools, indoor and outdoor tracks, 2 golf courses, a jogging course, a rink, 2 rifle ranges, 32 acres of practice fields, and numerous courts for tennis, handball, squash, and paddleball.

Wow, negative much?

You said yourself that you got sick...and one chapter didn't like you? How would you know? Did they tell you to your face? Out of 20 organizations you're going to make sweeping conclusions that greek life hates you because TWO organizations were doing spring recruitment and you didn't get a bid? Perhaps you need to reevaluate your reason for wanting to go greek to begin with here.

Maybe you need to get more involved and meet more people in other campus organizations first, and perhaps be more proactive about greek life, as in going to the Greek Life office and asking questions in person as opposed to on the internet waiting for someone to get back to you.

Megan51088 02-16-2008 01:32 PM

I didn't mean to sound over negative. It was a bit of an exaggeration. I know Greek Life doesn't hate me, but it just seemed like it was not working in my favor at all. I apologize for upsetting you

nittanygirl 09-16-2009 02:27 PM

greek life at penn state has been a little rough for me as well.
things just arent working out.
i'm still hopeful though

As a Penn State alum, I can say that I am proud of my Penn State and sorority experience! I hope you girls are looking at "ALL" of the sororities and not just getting your hopes set on any particular one. If you open yourself up to all of the chapters, you have a chance to get involved in Greek Life!

Remember that just because sorority XYZ is the best at Penn State, that doesn't mean it is the best at another school and vice versa. I know many girls who have joined various organizations on campus and their experience was incredible at Penn State but also as an Alumna member of the sorority.

Why don't you check out chapters that may not have the greatest numbers and are more flexible when it comes to taking juniors?

Just remember: When THON rolls around-nobody cares WHAT sorority you joined, but just that you joined and spent some of your weekends canning for money to support Children's Pediatric Cancer! I implore you to go on YouTube and check out videos of this year's THON. Once you watch that, you'll understand why I am so proud to say I am a member of Phi Mu from Penn State University! THON makes me feel like I am part of something bigger than myself! Also, ALL of the sororities support various philanthropies that you can help with!

Would you rather join a sorority that isn't the #1 on campus or join a sorority that you can help build up (and also get involved with as an Alumna) and work to raise money for THON? Do you really want to give that up? Joining a sorority at Penn State isn't hard-just keep an open mind!

:)
