Rho Gammas
 

i interviewed and was selected to be a rho gamma next year. but i didnt tell anyone in my sorority. we have certain rules about who is allowed to do it, and everyone decided that i had to stay for rush because im one of the prettiest girls in our chapter.
its really unfair because of the rush system we have. the prettiest girls stand near the front door and walk girls into the house where they are paired with someone else. really pretty girls get paired with all the bestlooking rushees, plain janes are paired with normal girls, etc.
were only allowed to be a rho gamma if you are in group 4. selections will be posted on the greek website first day of class- heres my question

should i tell my exec now or wait for them to find out. im afraid that if i tell them now i will be pressured to resign my spot.

anyone else been in a similar situation? i know all the sororities here do it except for the best ones because they have so many pretty girls it doesnt matter.

Since you've already been selected, maybe try talking to the Rho Gamma coordinator or Panhellenic VP Recruitment on how to tell your chapter. I can't see how your chapter could force you to resign the position. Having good Rho Gammas is important! You're recruiting PNMs for the whole community.

My chapter's VP Membership was sad that I wouldn't be recruiting for SK last spring, because she says I am good at recruiting, but we'd never tell someone she CAN'T become a Rho Gamma.

On the flip side, it probably wasn't in your best interest to go behind the chapter's back and apply and be selected for a Rho Gamma position. I do think it's unfair that only "group 4" girls can apply for the position, but if you don't tell your chapter now, it will be a bigger deal when they do find out. Tell them ASAP, and hopefully you ladies can work something out! :)

I would have thought that the chapter would have had to verify your standing (like that you were active, didn't owe serious money, etc.) to become a rho gamma.

If you are close to someone on your executive board (or whatever you might call it) I would talk to them first.

Unfortunately, rush is a pretty superficial process when it comes right down to it, and your "system" is in place because that's what works for the sorority as a whole, and is in the best interest of the group.

But I'm SOOOOO sorry that you're too pretty to be a RhoGam. It must suck to be you.:rolleyes:

I don't blame you for disliking your chapter's system, I wouldn't be jazzed about something that's basically using me for my looks - and then you don't even get to talk to the girl, you hand her off to someone else!

If you're resentful of being there, it doesn't matter how perfect your face or figure, that is going to come through and NOT create a good impression on the rushees.

Definitely stay in your rho gamma position, and explain exactly why you decided to take it.

My chapter's EC had to approve you before you even applied. Sure helped to avoid situations like this... I say tell them before they find out. No sense in creating drama if you can avoid it.

i applied for Pi Chi recently(I dont find out until a month from now) and i have had a few sisters come up to me and tell me that i shouldnt have because they say im good at recruiting (i feel like a clutz though).

I think its good to have strong Pi Chis/Rho Gammas, they have to deal with so much that they have to be strong women! I say tell them now and if they make a fuss, just let them know that it was something you wanted to do to make not only your chapter, but Panhellenic as a whole better.

I don't think she's bragging - on the contrary, it sounds like she thinks her chapter just picked her for her looks and that they are the main thing she has to offer, and that kind of bites.

I got the same thing from her post. ...You need to tell your chapter, be firm, tell them why you stood up and wanted to be Pi Chi/ Rho Gamma. They may be upset, but they have to realize that you are representing your sorority by serving a position in Panhellenic!

It is soo important to have good Pi Chis!!!!

If you promise to dirty rush a few girls, I'm sure they'll change their mind.

why did i do this??? its like being stuck between a rock and a hard place. i dont like rushing because bid meeting are so mean. girls fight and yell and scream so i wanted to be a rho gamma.
i told my big i did it because we are not that close and i thought we could bond over the situation and at least something good could come of this. she just got mad and said i shouldnt have done it and that she was so embarrassed. im sorry, but i messed up you know???
but she said she wouldnt tell exec but that i had to so i guess i will soon.

i know they are going to make me talk about stupid stuff and when i give a girl a 10 no one will care because i always give girls 10s but its because i get all the good ones.

what is an easy let down? i want to keep my spot i would even tell girls what the best houses are. i dont want them to be clueless you know?? ill be a good rho gamma. i just dont want them to make me quit. sorry i know no one can really help me because i did it to myself. its just so unfair. i hate rush.

i dont want to be mean but i didnt know i was in a bad sorority during rush. all the fat rho gammas were in my sorority!! im not the prettiest but there are some well lets say not very attractive girls in my sorority.
i love my sisters but looks are not everything. so many girls have good personalities that we shouldnt care but they do anyway. i will barf if i have to talk to stupid barbies on group 1. i will tell them i do coke!!

im not bragging you are right. why would i brag when i am so stupid for doing this???

our system sucks. all the "less attractive" pnms have to stand in the hallway or the back porch when the good ones get to sit down in the living rooms.some days during rush i wish i was busted so i could work in the kitchen you know?? i dont know sorry for rambling.

Like others have said, be firm. Explain why you wanted the position and why it is important. They may try to guilt trip you, but can they really force you to resign if this is what you want?

First, sorry, but this really bothered me. You mean as a rho gamma you would "tell them what the best house is"? That is the absolute OPPOSITE of what you are to do. You are to be NEUTRAL in all matters concerning recruitment. You are NOT to give unfair advantages by giving your opinion, which these girls will take as the word of god because they know no better, even if it's to chapters other than your own. A GOOD Rho Gamma will remain neutral no matter how hard it is.

The best Rho Gamma's chose to be a recruitment counselor because they had a true desire to BE THERE for the new PNM's. Naturally, most that choose to apply for the job aren't there for that reason. Honestly, that was only one of mine, and I had several. But you have to be able to handle following the rules even harder than your sisters who are on the other side of recruitment are. You have to be able to handle NOT talking to them. You have to be able to handle being COMPLETELY neutral, no matter how badly you do or do not want a girl. You HAVE to understand Panhellenic spirit.

Not every Rho Gamma is going to want to do all of those things, and some won't even try. The best ones at least make a GENUINE effort to do all of that. And no, it isn't easy. I hate recruitment too...I truly do. But I can't say that being on call for PNM's, being disaffiliated, having to set an example by following all of the rules (everyone should try, but a sorority girl making an honest mistake and a rho gamma making an honest mistake are two different matters), remaining neutral, having to talk to girls who got dropped, and staying cheerful ALL of the time (at least when you're setting up for recruitment each night you get to let off some steam and be an ogre) was any easier. You're going to find that it's not an easy break.

If you still want to do it and think you can REALLY be a good rho gamma then I suggest you talk to your Exec NOW. I doubt they will be very happy with you, but I also doubt that they will remove you from the position unless there are rules against non-approved candidates applying for the position.

after talking to my big and after seeing some of your responses i think i decided i will tell my exec ASAP. i think i might even resign the rg spot myself. after what you wrote i realized that im not sure if i could help these new girls. how could i let them join the worst house on campus without knowing??
plus if i resign i think there would be less drama and maybe they wouldnt even tell the whole sorority and have everyone hate me. ugh but that means talking to the ditzes on group one about hair products.
i will learn to take a fall for the team and let you all know how it turns out. obviously i wont really tell them i do coke because i dont but i will put my best foot forward.
sorry about some of my posts. i know you cannot help me but i needed to vent because its the week before well you girls know how it is. i will call my vp tomorrow!! thanks for the advice!!

What you might consider the worst just might be "home" for others.

But yes, with that kind of thinking, please do your Panhellenic community a favor and resign.

I'm going on the premise that you are legit and have just had a drink or 2 before posting so...

If you honestly would tell the girls what the "best" and "worst" sororities are, you need to resign as a Rho Gamma NOW. They are supposed to be impartial, even if you think you're "helping" someone.

Your best bet at this point is to come down with a weeklong illness (something gross and contagious like pinkeye would be good) that prevents you from having any role in rush, period.

what a disaster!!:( i told my exec today and it did not go well. it could be worse i guess. before i could even tell her i was going to resign myself (thank you 33 and everyone else for helping me make a hard choice) she started yelling and made it into this HUGE deal that i was selected.:eek:
i might as well have been the wicked witch from the east!!:mad: so she yelled at me to quit being so selfish which doesnt even have anything to do with this and resign.:mad: i told her i wanted to and that i tried to tell her but she didnt believe me.:( now shes going to tell the entire exec and i will have to go to standards!! for coming clean!!:eek::eek::eek:
i dont tell them half the stuff that goes on and thank goodness because they would probably hang me in public!!!:rolleyes:

If they threaten you with standards call your adviser and talk to her. Be clear that you would like to be a Ro Ghamma or whatever they are calling it now. Threatening you with standards is stupid.

Well, considering her subsequent posts, it may have nothing to do w/ her looks - more like they don't want her to be saying stupid shit to the rushees because even though she's disaffiliated, when the rushees say "oh and by the way, RushLeader08 told me XYZ is the best sorority" it will still come back on the chapter.
