Predictions for BCs national title game?

LSU 42 OSU 17

chitownxo 12-26-2007 05:52 PM

LSU 35, OSU 31

As bad as the Big 10 was this year, according to the (good, non-crackpot) computer rankings and projection systems I've seen, the two teams are almost exactly evenly matched - this means the real difference between the two of them, on the whole, is that it's a home game for LSU.

That's about a 3-pt swing, so I'll go with something like 28-24 LSU . . . OSU should probably be able to run the ball at least a little (assuming they stay away from or double Dorsey) and their LBs should be able to contain a little, so I don't see the scoring getting too ridiculous unless LSU gets momentum early and the crowd lets them turn it into a rout. Should be an interesting match up.

LSU put up 49 against Va Tech, I don't seen anyone other than another SEC team stopping their offensive attack.

Ohio State has had quite a bit of experience with their new cheer:

"We're #2, We're #2!!!"

Please excuse me, I thought this thread discussed only two schools, but...as for my wonderful alma mater...well, the football team didn't lose a single game. :p

DeltAlum 12-27-2007 09:37 PM

I'm not predicting an Ohio State win, but either way I don't think it will be a rout.

Remember that this was supposed to be the proverbial "rebuilding" year for the Buckeyes. Not bad considering that.

PhiGam 12-28-2007 11:53 PM

Last year wasn't a rebuilding year and they got trounced. We'll see if Tressel tries that lame attempt at a Tampa two like he did last year, it will be the end of him.

Fratty McFrat-Fratt,
I dislike you more and more everytime you post.

I dislike OSU being in the national title game just because they beat up on the cupcakes in the Big Ten all year. LSU should be playing a team with athletes like Georgia or USC. OSU has some great players in Wells, Jenkins, and Lauranaitis but as the game drags on and the subs start to come in it becomes obvious that if you want to have great athletes you must recruit from warm weather climates.

I've been televising football for over thirty years, and if there's one thing I've learned it is that anything can happen in any given game.

If you don't believe it, look at all of the upsets during the season.

That's why I don't make predictions.

Anyone who makes a prediction on the basis of which conference is "strongest" is nuts. "Strongest" is a moving target based on a lot of variables.

The BCS "Championship" game this year will pit two teams with the same record -- both of whom were ranked number one and were upset.

I just hope it's a game that lives up to the BCS hype.

Strongest is based on which conference's teams can beat comparable teams in other conferences. As the fan of a team who's rival is an SEC team, I can admit that the SEC is dominant.

Oh, you mean football? That was in 1986 (when we beat another team in FL) http://www.infoplease.com/ipsa/A0747059.html. Though many will still make the argument for a rightful share of the title in 1994 (http://www.greatsportsrivalries.com/...champions.html).

And FSU's last one was in 1999. So? I posted the link in response to your calling Big 10 football "cupcake". You stop talking nonsense about Big 10 schools "not knowing" football and I'll stop reminding you of FSU losing to PSU in their home state of FL.

Man, and just as you were starting to grow on me the teeniest bit your last couple posts...

The year we backdoored the ACC Title? We were not very good that year, we just played well enough to beat Va Tech. Lets talk about the last few years with OSU and UM getting demolished.
FSU hasn't been good since 2001 but we're going to be very good in the near future.

You're right - FSU hasn't been good since 2001. I couldn't disagree more, however, with the second half of your statement. FSU won't be good again until Bowden is gone, and I just don't see that happening any time soon. Also (and I'm sure I'll get flamed for this by someone), FSU has such a reputation for putting criminals on the playing field that I'm glad they haven't been doing well. And I'm glad to see so many players kept out of the bowl game for their part in the recent cheating scandal. Maybe this'll make them clean up their act a little.

But, back to the topic of the thread... I'd like to see LSU win the championship game but, like DA said, anything can happen.

I can see how someone who's on the outside looking in would think that, but its just simply not the case.

TonyB06 12-31-2007 04:15 PM

Ohio State 20
LSU 17

OSU's Chris Wells will have to have at least 20-25 carries, allowing the Buckeyes to control the clock in this game.

(either that or we could get LSU to wear Michigan jerseys, in which case we'd crush em 40-0)

Munchkin03 12-31-2007 05:29 PM

Duh, we're all having fun with this, so no need to bring the obvious truth that anything can happen...

I'm going to go with LSU, 24-17. They'll be behind for most of the first half, but will take over just after halftime. The SEC IS a superior conference, after all.

OFFENSE - Per Game Average/ NCAA RANK

Total Yards
LSU 463.1 / 18th
OSU 405.4 / 61st

Passing Yards

LSU 244.2 / 53rd
OSU 204.8 / 95th

Rushing Yards

LSU 218.9 / 13th
OSU 200.7 / 22nd

Points Scored
LSU 38.7 / 13th
OSU 32.0 / 37th

Ohio State might be the first team to be crushed in consecutive national championship games...and by two different SEC teams.

i checked out Strength of Schedule stats @ http://teamrankings.com/ncf/27confratings.php3.
the algorithm they use ranks the SEC as the toughest SoS conference. also, OSU has a -0.064 and LSU has a .03. so those stats and NCAA rankings i posted don't mention that OSU got those mediocre ratings against weaker teams and in a weaker conference.

the fact that Ohio State is even in the national championship game again illustrates the demonstrable lack of compassion the BCS system has for the self-esteem of OSU's players and the entire Big Ten.

LSU 41
OSU 14

PhiGam 01-01-2008 03:21 PM

I was surprised at the way that the ACC performed against the SEC yesterday, half of FSU almost beat UK and Clemson hung with Auburn.

Kentucky Head Coach Rich Brooks' Post-Game Opening Statement: We find ways to make games entertaining. We’re always concerned about concession sales.

And for what it is worth, when people look back at the game, most will just remember that Kentucky won. Not that FSU had 36 players suspended for cheating etc.

As to the original question, I feel confident that Louisiana State will win. Just not sure by how much at this time.

You pansies in this thread need to wake up. This is not an "anything can happen" "Ohio State is evenly matched" situation.

They are not evenly matched.....at all. That's hilarious. Ohio State cannot match up with LSU, especially their defense. Their speed is ridiculous and will be 10x faster than anything that OSU has even come close to seeing this year. Ohio State got in this game by friggin' default......let's not forget that. The only reason they are in is because they were a 1 loss team from a BCS conference and every other team in the hunt had 2 (..and yes, I realize Kansas had only one loss, but they blew their chance with Mizzou). I must be nice playing Akron and Youngstown followed by 4-9 Washington leading into conference play in a conference that was about as good as the WAC. Also, they are playing in New Orleans. That would be in Louisiana.

...and what is with the link to the Penn State/FSU game. Oh wow. Ohio State beat a mediocre Penn State team who beat an even more mediocre Florida State team. LSU outscored their first four opponent 165-23 and beat 6 top 20 teams this year.

I'm calling something like 38-14.

NutBrnHair 01-03-2008 10:52 AM

I think it's so anticlimactic to have this game one week after Jan. 1. Hurry up and play the game already!

KSig RC 01-03-2008 11:22 AM

Can we put this "the SEC is too fast for the Big 10" shit to bed already? Florida, which has had as much talent as anyone recently (and runs a spread), is now 2-4 against the Big 10 in bowl games since 2000, including a down-year Michigan team hanging 525 yards while giving up 4 TOs and winning.

The SEC is the best conference in the nation, no one on Earth can argue that (I don't really think it's particularly close) - and LSU is probably the best team in the country in terms of raw talent.

But in the age of the 80-scholarship limit, it's pretty inane to argue that speed is the difference between two traditional powers - now, you can probably argue that the SEC plays at a faster pace. That's 100% true, in my mind - and I'm pretty sure possession-by-possession data bears that out. That's not the same thing as speed, though.

Comparison of Northern and Southern Football

Since there seems to be a kind of South versus North thing going on, perhaps it might be fun to pull out this chestnut. ;)

Comparison of Northern and Southern Football

WOMEN'S ACCESSORIES
North: Chap stick in back pocket and a $20 bill in the front pocket.
South: Louis Vuitton duffel with two lipsticks, water-proof mascara, and a fifth of bourbon. Money not necessary; that's what dates are for.

STADIUM SIZE
North: College football stadiums hold 20,000 people.
South: High School football stadiums hold 20,000 people.

FATHERS
North: Expect their daughters to understand Sylvia Plath.
South: Expect their daughters to understand pass interference.

CAMPUS DECOR
North: Statues of founding fathers.
South: Statues of Heisman Trophy winners.

HOMECOMING QUEEN
North: Also a physics major.
South: Also Miss USA.

HEROES
North: Mario Cuomo.
South: Paul "Bear" Bryant.

GETTING TICKETS
North: 5 days before the game you walk into the ticket office on campus and purchase tickets.
South: 5 months before the game walk into the ticket office on campus and put name on waiting list for tickets after you donate $5K to the Athletic Fund.

FRIDAY CLASSES AFTER A THURSDAY NIGHT GAME
North: Students and teacher are not sure if they are going to the game, because they have classes on Friday.
South: Teachers cancel Friday classes because they don't want to see the few hung over students that might actually make it to class.

PARKING
North: An hour before game time the University opens the campus for game parking.
South: RVs sporting their school flags begin arriving on Wednesday for the weekend festivities. The really faithful arrive on Tuesday.

GAME DAY
North: A few students party in the dorm and watch ESPN on TV.
South: Every student wakes up, has a beer for breakfast and rushes over to where ESPN is broadcasting "Game Day Live" to get on camera and wave to the idiots up North who wonder why "Game Day Live" is never broadcast from their campus.

TAILGATING
North: Raw meat on a grill, beer with lime in it, listening to local radio station with truck tailgate down.
South: 30-foot custom pig-shaped smoker fires up at dawn. Cooking accompanied by live performance by "Dave Matthews Band," who come over during breaks and ask for a hit off bottle of bourbon.

GETTING TO THE STADIUM
North: You ask "Where's the stadium?". When you find it, you walk right in.
South: When you're near it, you'll hear it. On game day it becomes the state's third largest city.

CONCESSIONS
North: Drinks served in a paper cup, filled to the top with soda.
South: Drinks served in a plastic cup with the home team's mascot on it. Filled less than halfway with soda, to ensure enough room for bourbon.

WHEN NATIONAL ANTHEM IS PLAYED
North: Stands are less than half full, and less than half of them stand up.
South: 100,000 fans, all standing, sing along in perfect 3-part harmony.

THE SMELL IN THE AIR AFTER THE FIRST SCORE
North: Nothing changes.
South: Fireworks, with a touch of bourbon.

COMMENTARY (MALE)
North: "Nice play."
South: "Dammit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs!!"

COMMENTARY (FEMALE)
North: "My, this certainly is a violent sport."
South: "Dammit, you slow sumbitch - tackle him and break his legs!!"

ANNOUNCERS
North: Neutral and paid.
South: Announcer harmonizes with the crowd in the fight song, with a tear in his eye because he is so proud of his team.

AFTER THE GAME
North: The stadium is empty way before the game ends.
South: Another rack of ribs goes on the smoker. While somebody goes to the nearest package store for more bourbon, planning begins for next week's game.

AOIIalum 01-03-2008 09:47 PM

Can both teams just hurry up and lose already? I don't care that I'm a SEC girl, let LSU go down in flames already. Same goes for my adopted hometown team, as I'm sick and tired of the OSU bandwagon fans. If it's anything like last year, the bandwagons crashing throughout Ohio will probably be measured on the Richter Scale.

Go halftime show!!!

nittanyalum 01-03-2008 09:57 PM

Ohhhh, TSteven, you poor, misled fool. You have CLEARLY never been to a home football game at Penn State. All the "big-time" football things you claim for "the south" are true, if not truer, at dear old state. You HAVE NOT SEEN A STUDENT SECTION until you've been to Beaver Stadium (packed at over 107,000 fans). So besides all the dip-isht girly assignations you made, I would flip just about every comparison you made and say that anyone at a big northern school would have the exact opposite assumptions of how things are in "the south" versus "the north".

BuckeyeTriDelta 01-03-2008 10:43 PM

Oh TSteven, I must agree with my fellow Big Ten friend...Ohio Stadium seats 102,329 and is the fourth largest on campus stadium in the U.S. Also, the ONLY two time Heisman Trophy winner came from *gasp* not Ole Miss *gasp* not Auburn..why..yes it came from The Ohio State University. Last time I tried to get OSU tickets, they were sold out (thank goodness for Alumni tickets..). You cannot walk up to the ticket area at Ohio Stadium and expect to get in. It just is not going to happen. We won't even touch the tailgating (obviously you have never been on Lane Avenue or walked down 15th). It is tradition to stay after the games to sing "Carmen Ohio" with the football team and band and it send chills down my spine everytime. Let's not even discuss marching bands..TBDBITL;)

Did I leave anything out Benzgirl?

Benzgirl 01-03-2008 11:14 PM

First of all, my friend TSteven plagiarized a website without quoting the source. Something that I guess they don't teach in southern schools. Here are some corrections to the site, the article, and to Mr. Steven.

STADIUM SIZE

What rock have you been hiding under? The 5 largest stadiums in the country:
Michigan (Big 10) Michigan 107,501
Penn State (Big 10) Beaver 107,282
Tennessee (SEC) Neyland 102,038
Ohio State (Big 10) Ohio 101,568 (102,329)
UCLA (Pac 10) Rose Bowl 95,000

North: Statues of founding fathers.
South: Statues of Heisman Trophy winners.

Do you really want to make this statement? The last 10 Heisman winners...
2006 Troy Smith (Big 10)
2005 Reggie Bush (Pac 10)
2004 Matt Leinart (Pac 10)
2003 Jason White (Big 12)
2002 Carson Palmer (Pac 10)
2001 Eric Crouch (Big 12)
2000 Chris Weinke (SEC)
1999 Ron Dayne (Big 10)
1998 Ricky Williams (Big 12)
1997 Charles Woodson (Big 10)

Getting to the Stadium
North: You worship it's entrance. If you want to hear the skull session (band pre-game) you must be there 2 hours in advance to get a seat. TBDBITL undeniably!

Game Attire
A Northern Woman wouldn't be caught dead wearing Lilly Pulitzer to a game. It clashes with team colors
A Northern Man simply wears a jersey bearing the number of his favorite Heisman winner:
ACC 5 Winners
Big 10 14 Winners
Big 12 11 Winners
Pac 10 10 Winners
SEC 7 Winners
Notre Dame 7 Winners (same as SEC combined. Ain't that special?)

After the Game
Northerners and their teams can't leave the field until they have sung their Alma Matter
Southern teams just repeat Cliches through the entire game, "Go Gators", "Hotty Toddy gawdy gawdy", "Roll Tide Rollin, Rollin, Rollin, Get those doggies rollin". By the time the game ends, they are so confused they can't find their way out of the stadium.

I could go on and on of your inaccuracies, but you are just not worth it.

ETA: And if my homecoming queen was a Physics Major, instead of a ditzy Miss USA, the north would have bragging rights hands down. (Internal Beauty, Scholarship and accomplishments vs. external beauty)

Woohoo! You go on with your stat-bad self, sister!! *gasp* And you're a GIRL! ;) :) Tell 'em how it is in the BIG stadiums where they play in short-sleeves in the snow. Girls in frilly dresses couldn't hack a game in November in PA or OH or Wisc. and the boys in their collared shirts would get all rumpled. We wear and yell our school spirit, and yes, the girls do yell just as loudly and as knowingly as the boys, thank you very much. We're all raised in our GRAND football traditions up here too. So whether it was a "generalization" or not (don't think he needs your defense, SEC, but thanks), it was waaaaayyyyy off. And deserved the rebuttal.
