VH1's 100 Greatest Songs of the 90's

Did anyone else watch this? Which songs do you think should've been on the list...I loved it..brought back some memories and compared to some stuff today...I'm wishing for a comeback of loads of these acts!

knight_shadow 12-21-2007 10:44 PM

When did that come on? I love watching the countdown-type shows on VH1. I'm sure it'll replay 4.2 million times though...

jitterbug13 12-21-2007 10:47 PM

Not a single Boyz II Men song is on this list. No "The Boy is Mine". No "I Swear". :mad:

But the list is not bad. I saw part one on Monday.

Here is the full list...

ETA: If you go on the website and see how many songs weren't on the list, you would be :eek:. They have videos of some of the songs that didn't make it.

Wow, that is terrible. "Rico Suave" and "MMMBop," but no Boyz II Men at all. Kinda makes me glad I missed it now, heh

*SMH*

TotallyWicked 12-21-2007 11:09 PM

I'm wondering how "Say My Name" by DC is on the list...that didn't come out in the 90's, it came out Feb 2000, if they wanted to choose one of their songs...why not "No, No, No"?

TotallyWicked 12-21-2007 11:20 PM

I'm mad no Boyz II Men is on there and Busta's "Put your hands where my eyes can see" is not on it..I woulda thought En Vogue's "Don't Let Go" would be on it..

we must remember this is Vh1 so they're prob basing it on their 90's playlist.

jitterbug13 12-21-2007 11:21 PM

The album "Say My Name" was on (The Writing's On The Wall) came out in '99. And the reason they chose that song was it was DC's breakout song.

I can live with Mmm Bop, but Rico Suave? :confused: :p

And I don't know how I would have survived the 90s without BIIM.

Woo Haa!!! is my favorite Busta song. Come to think about it, why isn't Big Poppa on the list? And One Sweet Day (which is the longest running #1 on Billboard 100)? Who voted?

TotallyWicked 12-21-2007 11:27 PM

woooow..."Gangsta's Paradise" was not on the list :eek::eek::eek::eek:
"Whoomp there it is"
"Gin and Juice"
"Black or White"
"Kiss from a Rose"
"Hard Knock Life"
"Boy is Mine"

Nearly made it but for some reason didn't...they coulda replaced Lisa Loeb any day :mad:

ZTAngel 12-21-2007 11:33 PM

I'm surprised Boyz II Men was not on there. Also, I'm surprised that Chumbawamba's "Tubthumping" wasn't on there. That song was HUGE and (I admit) I still turn my radio up whenever it comes on.

TotallyWicked 12-21-2007 11:51 PM

I could go another day without having to listen to anything BSB, they're showing "I want it that way" right now...I am soo glad that era is over...and cannot believe I lived and survived it!

cuteASAbug 12-21-2007 11:57 PM

no Macarena?

jitterbug13 12-22-2007 12:00 AM

Speaking of boy bands, why aren't there any songs by New Kids on The Block?

I also realize that the Humpty Dance is on the list!! :)

Dear VH1,

There are a lot of songs left off this list.

Agreed. While I'm at it, "Waterfalls" and "Losing My Religion" are both vastly superior to anything Britney Spears ever released. TLC should never, ever be ranked lower than Ms. Spears anywhere or in any way, shape or form. :eek:

LeslieAGD 12-22-2007 11:02 AM

I really liked the countdown, but I took issue with the order.
Ice Ice Baby is only #29...really?!? Mama Said Knock You Out is #56? ...But U2 is #2, yuck!!!

Also, there were a lot of artists that I would have picked different songs to represent them on the list.
For example: The Cranberries "Zombie," not "Linger"

There were only about 10 songs I would honestly take off the list, but here are some I think were seriously overlooked:
* Los Del Rio - The Macarena
* Boys II Men - Motown Philly
* Fat Boy Slim - The Rockerfeller Skank
* Mandy Moore - Candy
* Coolio - Gangsta's Paradise
* Shaggy - Boombastic
* Aqua - Barbie Girl
* Des'ree - You Gotta Be
* Ini Kamoze - Here Comes The Hotstepper
* All for One - I Swear
* Michael Jackson - Black or White
* Roxette - It Must Have Been Love
* Leann Rimes - How Do I Live
* Snap - Rhythm Is A Dancer
* Quad City DJs - C'mon And Ride (The Train)
* Big Punisher & Joe - I Don't Wanna Be A Player No More
* Something by Ace of Base - The Sign / All That She Wants / Don't Turn Around
* Something by Brian McKnight - Crazy Love / Anytime / Back at One
* Something by Janet Jackson - Love Will Never Do / That's The Way Love Goes / If
* Something by Usher - You Make Me Wanna / My Way / Nice and Slow
* Something by Brandy, Monica, Aaliyah, or Toni Braxton

jitterbug13 12-22-2007 11:21 AM

I was getting ready to post that there was nothing by Michael or Janet (or Scream would have covered them both) They did have some pretty good songs in the 90s. I also agree that something from Usher, Brandy, Monica or Aaliyah should have been on the list.

I forgot about Boombastic, Got To Be and Here Comes The Hotstepper. I agree they should be on the list (come on, Informer made it on!)

I disagree with Barbie Girl. I hate that song. I wish Mattel would have won that lawsuit.

For the Boyz II Men, I would have either chose End of the Road or I'll Make Love To You. They could have also chose One Sweet Day and covered both them and Mimi.

Where are the R. Kelly songs? They could have at least had either Bump and Grind or I Believe I Can Fly.

ETA: Thought of some more! Save The Best For Last, How Do You Talk To An Angel, A Whole New World (from Alladin), Love Is (Vanessa and Brian McKnight)

Yes, Barbie Girl is obnoxious, but you have to admit that it was a highly iconic song of the 1990s.
For that reason, I think it should have made the list.

jitterbug13 12-22-2007 01:01 PM

I did think of another song: I'll Be Missing You (Diddy).

Senusret I 12-22-2007 02:05 PM

I gotta say, even though a lot were missing.....most of the songs that DID make the list were my JAM!!!

I literally became a man in the 90s.... I was in 5th grade in 1990 and a Junior in college by the end of 1999.

sunnyhibiscus 12-23-2007 02:05 AM

S Club-7 didn't become popular until after 2000 here in America. I'm so glad that Nirvana had the #1 song of the 90s. BSB at #3? You've got to be kiddin' me!

I miss the 90s. Things we're so simple during that time.

I agree. I don't get how that song ended up at #3. A more popular or influential song than "Jeremy" or "Waterfalls"? I don't think so!

tld221 12-24-2007 02:16 AM

im so mad that i missed the last hour of this series! but Nirvana's "Smells like Teen Spirit" i think was a good #1 choice - it does scream 90s for me, but too bad it doesnt reflect as many genres of the 90s. but i think grunge screams 90s more than, say, gangsta rap or boy bands. i so need to get it on my iPod.

random notes:
1. i was just WAITING for Mariah Carey/Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day" to be on there and it sho wasnt! doesnt it hold some Billboard record?
2. though i was a HUGE BSB fan, the fact that they made it at #3 (and for one of their lesser hits - i mean what about "All I have to Give?") vs *NSYNC's #30 "Tearing up my heart (would SO trade in for "Bye Bye Bye," which, though released 3/2000, i think another song on this list was released in 2000...) is a sure way of knowing that this list is BOGUS!
3. no DMB??? come on! and where is Prodigy "Smack my B*tch up?"

but i will say a lot of these songs were my JAM and wish they were on my iPod. VH1 needs to compile a CD or have some iTunes link for me to DL these songs - i think i'd like about half the songs on this list on my playlist.

PeppyGPhiB 12-24-2007 09:05 PM

BoysIIMen was one of the biggest groups of the early 90s...I can't believe they're not on the list. Ah, I remember the days of dancing with a boy at a middle school dance to "It's so hard to say goodbye to yesterday."

Velocity_14 12-24-2007 09:22 PM

Dang, no SWV...."Weak" is a classic....and where in the world is Shai's "If I Ever Fall In Love" and I don't see Xscape on here *singing: Just Kickin and Tooooooniiiiiight*...goodness, and what about R. Kelly...okay, I'll stop but I must admit, a lot of the songs that made the list were my songs..."Informer" by Snow was my junt....lol:o.

I LOVE that song (the slow version)!

thesweetestone 12-25-2007 11:06 PM

How the Hell did The backstreetboys rank #3?

When ever I think of the 90's I think about BIIM's "End of the Road"

96,97, 99, and 100 should have been left off the list.

For real! I'm mad they practically stopped playing it once the remix came out! :mad:

Thetagirl218 12-26-2007 01:36 AM

So I watched a few minutes of this with my dad.....Laughed at the fashions that I copied when I was kid...I did not like most of the song choices...

No Ace of Base....It saddens me...The Sign kinda was an anthem when i was a kid!!! lol!!!

I will have to disagree with you on the Cranberries front. Linger was from their first album, and it's what made them huge here in the states.

I too cannot believe the appalling lack of NKOTB, BIIM, and where's Bobby Brown? I realize we have some BBD, but where's the love for Bobby? What about Tony, Tone, Toni (or whatever order it was in)?

Jimmy Choo 12-28-2007 10:48 PM

Looking back I have to echo everyone else... no Boys II Men?!? And nothing by Janet Jackson??? Her tours were one of the hottest tickets in the 90's. I also can't believe they didn't include Outkast. "Rosa Parks" was huge!!!
