# of Single Letter Chapters Still Active?

This is a spinoff of AF's thread listing all of the NPC groups by single letters...

In this thread, ALL groups can play!

There are 24 letters in the Greek Alphabet -- how many single-letter chapters does your GLO have which are still open/active?

azureblue 12-14-2007 01:28 PM

Zeta: Rockford Seminary, Rockford, IL - 1874-1878
Nu: Franklin College, Franklin, IN - 1879-1884
Tau: Lasell Seminary, Auburndale, MA - 1881-1882
Phi: Boston University, Boston, MA - 1882-1971
Xi: Adrian College, Adrian, MI - 1882-1944

This is where things get confusing, though. Prior to 1890, chapters that were established after a previous chapter had folded were given that chapter's designation letter. Then, at the 1890 convention, it was determined the second chapters would use the letter Beta to preface the chapter letter to show they were the second chapter of that letter and closed chapter letters would not be re-used. Chapters that were closed and then later reinstated use the designation "Deuteron" (a small delta set superscript to the letter) for the Greek term meaning "second".

So theoretically:

Beta Gamma: University of Wooster, Wooster, OH - 1876-1914
Beta Beta: St. Lawrence University, Canton, NY - 1881-1903, 1915
Beta Zeta: University of Iowa, Iowa City, IA - 1882
Beta Tau: Syracuse University, Syracuse, NY - 1883

could/should have been single-letter chapters considering they were founded before the final single-letter chapter was founded in 1884.

Our Beta chapter is still going strong .. and in fact enjoys the distinction of actually being older as an organized group than our Alpha chapter. Beta chapter of Alpha Xi Delta was chapter S of PEO until PEO decided to withdraw collegiate chapters.

For Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, 10, arguably 12, out of 26 (we've had two Gamma chapters and two Zeta chapters -- I'm not sure how that happened):

Delta -- Ithaca College (1901-present)
Epsilon -- University of Michigan (1902-1967, 1991-present)
Theta -- Syracuse university (1904-1972, 2005-present)
Zeta -- University of Missouri - Columbia (1907-present)
Iota -- Northwestern University (1910-present)
Mu -- University of Oklahoma (1912-present)
Xi -- University of Kansas (1914-1988, 1997-present)
Pi -- Simpson College (1917-present)
Tau -- Kansas State University (1921-1934, 1960-1985, 1999-present)
Phi -- University of Wisconsin - Madison

In addition, our Eta Chapter (Cincinnati College of Music, 1903-1955) and our Omicron Chapter (Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, 1914-1955) merged in 1955 when their hosting institutions merged. The resulting chapter -- Eta-Omicron -- has existed continuously since 1955 and is our only chapter with a "hyphenated" name, which is done to commemorate the chapter's double history.

All of those from Zeta to Kappa were established between 1974-1978...we apparently had some really lax expansion policies back then, and none of these chapters lasted very long at all. Omega was founded in 2000, and had closed already by the time I joined in Spring 2004.

Ohio State University is Omicron Deuteron, and was founded in 1878. They were reinstalled in 2005. At least this is what the website siad
The chapter was the first fraternity on Ohio State's campus and their most famous member is Jack Nicklaus. That I know to be true

LegallyBrunette 12-15-2007 04:08 PM

This is accurate as of right now too.

And I'm curious, why doesn't AST have an Epsilon chapter?

What the heck is 'deuteron' ?

Benzgirl 12-15-2007 08:01 PM

Typically it is a chapter that has become dormant (inactive). Oftentimes, it has re-colonized or re-established.
Our sorority does not use it but many others do

epchick 12-15-2007 08:54 PM

Alpha Phi has 21 of 24 active single letter chapters.

Alpha--Syracuse University

Lambda--UC Berkeley

We could also add Phi deuteron, Stanford (1892-1944, 1978-)

Our confusing Phi/Phi deuteron chapter history: Our Phi chapter was established at Univ. of the Pacific (then in San Jose) in 1889. The Phi chapter charter was transferred to Stanford in 1892. Stanford "outlawed" sororities in 1944. In 1959, a chapter was established at the new University of the Pacific in Stockton as Phi. When Theta was able to return to the Stanford campus in 1979, the re-established chapter was given the Phi deuteron (Phi the second) designation. Both Phi/UoP and Phi deuteron/Stanford still exist.

There has never been a Mu chapter of AOII

And, because AOII does not name its chapters in order, there are a few double-letter chapters that are older than single-letter ones, so the game doesn't work so well for us. (Although most of the oldest chapters are single-letter.)

The dates are right... I don't know if that chapter was OSU's first fraternity or not. What does that have to do with single-letter chapters, though?
