I majored in English, don't even get me started! I went so far as to join a group on Facebook called "I know the difference between there, their, and they're." :p I also joined "I picked a major I like and someday I will live in a box." :(

LOL. I don't judge people with poor spelling or grammar, it just makes it hard for me to take you seriously. I know they teach this stuff in schools so I find it hard to believe that people aren't at least being exposed to it since attending some kind of school is required by law in this country. And on a forum that is about Greek Life (which equates to people in college or who have graduated from college), finding bad spelling or grammar is even more surprising to me.

Then sweetie, you might want to check your own posts for typos. Especially since you have graduated form college. Just teasing! I know exactly what you mean.

SthrnZeta 12-14-2007 11:09 AM

Indeed, lol. I fixed it! I usually spell-check myself, hence seeing that I edit most of my posts after that fact. Sigh. I just type too fast for this super brain of mine! ;)

Since the title of your post is "Can someone please help me!!" and I am in a very snarky mood today, indeed I will help you.

First of all, "Can someone please help me" is a question. Generally those are ended with question marks. Unless you are writing in Spanish, and although I don't know the language very well, I believe questions both start and end with question marks.

Second of all, I would highly recommend suing your high school. Apparently you learned very little about the English language, much less that it's a transcript, not a transcit.

Thirdly, I do understand why you used the "confused smiley." We are all confused by your poor writing skills. I suggest taking every English class possible to improve your syntax.

I could go on, but as snarky as I feel today, I do have a ton of errands to do.

In the words of Tim Gunn... "Carry on!"

^^^I'm with you. Now Earpus wants to send me to Hell for my criticism. I need a good tan these days, anyway!

My other pet peeves:
  • "a lot" are two words, not one
  • to, too and two
  • ain't (don't go there)
  • "we was"
  • "y'all guys" -- the plural is either You or Y'all, for both Southerners and Northerners

SthrnZeta 12-14-2007 11:28 AM

^^ That reminds me of a Southern joke: If you're a true Southerner, you should get this. What is the plural of "y'all?"

ALL Y'ALL! :D

I've been grading finals all week long, so I'm in absolutely the WRONG mindset to read crap like this. I had to break out the red pen and fix this mess.

It took me so long to figure out what her question was that I'm not going to spend anymore of my time actually trying to provide an answer. I will, however, offer this answer to her Thread Title (even though it isn't presented as a question). Yes, I can help you. Seek out your university's writing center. They have people there who can help people like you. Seriously, you should try it.

I have been doing a lot of research and I believe I have a good grasp and understanding about them and what they mean and thier programs. (The previous sentence is just wrong in too many ways to correct it. Plus, I realize I'm completely wasting my time) I have been invited by the vice president to go to all their events, community service projects, informationals and interviews. And yes I went to everything she invited me to.

Do you think I have a good chance of becoming a member?

I haven't turned all my papers in because I'm waiting to get my transcript. (Omitted all this, so I'm not bothering correcting it: because It would be my first transict for college, and i finally got my grades. And I was wondering it might be too late to turn everything in and b/c i'm have to wait to recieve my transcit.)

^^^LOL, Sydney. If only you could get your red pen on her username! (I mean, really, this is either really purposefully bad, in which case it's just annoying, or I'm truly afraid of this incoming college generation...)

AlphaFrog 12-14-2007 12:53 PM

Sydney - You missed "thier" in the first sentence of the second "paragraph". Though I'm sure this is beyond the level of anything the OP will ever get to, it is improper to end a sentence with a preposition, like the last sentence of that "paragraph". Although I admit the preposition thing is one of my worst grammar habits.:D

Benzgirl 12-14-2007 12:53 PM

We can't blame today's teachers entirely on poor grammar and spelling skills. I mean, look at Earp.

I do hate to do this, but I must deduct 1/2 a point from you, Benzgirl, for using the word "snuck" in another forum. :)

From the American Heritage Dictionary:
ETYMOLOGY:
Probably akin to Middle English sniken, to creep, from Old English snhttp://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/...hd/s/imacr.gifcan
Usage Note:
Snuck is an Americanism first introduced in the 19th century as a nonstandard regional variant of sneaked. Widespread use of snuck has become more common with every generation. It is now used by educated speakers in all regions. Formal written English is more conservative than other varieties, of course, and here snuck still meets with much resistance. Many writers and editors have a lingering unease about the form, particularly if they recall its nonstandard origins. And 67 percent of the Usage Panel disapproved of snuck in our 1988 survey. Nevertheless, an examination of recent sources shows that snuck is sneaking up on sneaked. Snuck was almost 20 percent more common in newspaper articles published in 1995 than it was in 1985. Snuck also appears in the work of many respected columnists and authors: "He ran up huge hotel bills and then snuck out without paying" (George Stade). "He had snuck away from camp with a cabinmate" (Anne Tyler). "I ducked down behind the paperbacks and snuck out" (Garrison Keillor).
