Concussion Experiences

As I write this, my husband is on his way home with our son, who sustained a light concussion during a wrestling match. The coach says he's disoriented. :(

Has anyone had experiences with concussions? Has anyone had lasting side effects from them?

honeychile 12-13-2007 11:54 PM

If I remember properly, you should wake him up and make sure he's oriented every two hours for the first 24 hours. If he doesn't seem alert, is drooling or whatever, then you need to take him back to the ER.

Unless he has several severe concussions, it shouldn't be a problem. Was he unconscious for long?

That was the drill I followed after my room mate received one.

I experienced a concussion after being hit head on by a drunk driver. It was mild (even though my car had no air bag, thank God for me wearing my seatbelt) but my mom insisted on me having an MRI to make sure all was ok (and it was). I have not had any long term effects as far as the brain goes however my nasal septum was crushed and I have had to have 3 rhinoplasties. I hope your son is ok.

Leslie Anne 12-14-2007 02:46 AM

I had a concussion when I was ten years old. I wasn't unconscious for very long but it wasn't considered "mild."

My parents did the same thing Honey mentioned with waking me up every few hours and making sure I was alert. I had a headache for several days but no lasting damage.

I'm sure you'll be watching him like a hawk so as long as he can focus when you wake him he should be just fine.

Best wishes for a smooth and speedy recovery.

ETA: It's not unusual to be disoriented at first. I definitely was. That part cleared up after about 8 to 10 hours as I recall.

Proverbs31 12-14-2007 04:16 AM

I had a concussion when I was 9 y/o (after a slip and fall in a flooded restroom at school). From what I remember, the doctor/nurse checked my eyes throughout the night to make sure I was conscious. I was released from the hospital the next day with no complications.

Drolefille 12-14-2007 04:34 AM

I've had a minor one from a soccer collision.
There's the "keep you awake for 24 hour" bit, which I think my mom did for a bit, but then just checked on me to make sure I was sleeping fine. The checking the eyes is to make sure the pupils are equally dilated because one not working right is a sign of damage. The disorientation fades, it's just the brain trying to sort itself back out again.

The biggest thing I heard was NOT to do anything that would get you re-concussed for however long your brain was recovering from it, a concussion on top of an existing one is a lot more dangerous.

But you don't need to bubble wrap the kid's head or anything, just no wrestling until the doctor says.

NutBrnHair 12-14-2007 09:42 AM

Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the "man-child" of the Carnation Nation. I've never known you had sons too!?!

carnation 12-14-2007 06:13 PM

Yes, NutBrnHair, we have 4 sons from 7 to 17! :)

Turns out that both our son and another wrestler were thrown on their heads (both flagrant fouls) during matches. I also found out that the same thing happened to a kid from the school where I teach when they wrestled this same school...plus another of my students got punched in the head.

Both boys are still a little spacy but much more with it today. However, they can't wrestle for at least 2 weeks.

FSUZeta 12-14-2007 06:40 PM

have the refs never heard of a dq?

i hope that "carnason" is feeling better and is fully recovered when he goes back to wrestling.

carnation 12-14-2007 08:01 PM

Ooo! Bad pun! I feel so awful about 'carnason' that I might let him have that FSU shirt back. For a short time.

Drolefille, you were right, the coach says that the 2 boys can't wrestle until the doctor clears them...in 2 weeks. :( My husband, who teaches at their school, said that several teachers commented to him that their eyes looked kinda glazed. Our kids have been injured in various sports but a concussion is a new one for us.

My husband was mugged when he was 12, and wound up with a concussion. He doesn't remember the incident. He was kept in the hospital for 2 days. When he was discharged, the doc told his mother he should take it easy... so my super-over-protective MIL forbade him from participating in ANY extracurricular activities for the rest of the school year. Y'know, because it's so easy to get a concussion from singing in the choir. Anyway, he was back at school about a week after the attack.

Hope your son and the other wrestler have speedy recoveries. :)

AGDee 12-15-2007 12:56 AM

If they were really concerned, they wouldn't have sent him home quickly. Sometimes they'll keep someone on the 23 hour stay unit to keep an eye on them. Hope they feel better soon (and I hope someone does something about the vicious wrestling team too)

Did anyone else have a Friends moment? Phoebe and Ross? Just me? :p

PageantDiamonds 12-15-2007 12:55 PM

One of my sisters had a nanny who shook her baby. There was no injury involved until she saw the video (hidden in a stuffed animal). She slapped the nanny, who denied the whole episode. People are so stupid.

carnation 12-15-2007 01:30 PM

So today is the huge tournament at our son's high school and he and the other boy can only help. :( I swear, if I'd seen him being thrown, I would have gone after the cheater; his older brother said he would have been down there too. Older brother is big and in tip top shape...

Anyway, the good news is that after the boy threw our son, our son rose up in a fog of fury and pinned him and won. Then he sank down in a daze.

I don't understand why refs who never call infractions are allowed to continue to officiate. I don't understand why that school is allowed to keep wrestling.

Yes, you are. And your writing the above is the height of irony.

Click back through your posts (I'd copy them here before you have a chance to delete them, but I don't want to spend that much time on this) -- you started with a nonsensical post almost immediately after Sedrick (troll) was banned, you continued for days with nonsensical, poorly spelled and puctuated posts and questions that tried to give the impression you didn't have a firm grasp on the english language. You posted (purposeful) crude responses in the concussions thread and the Dutch couple thread, accused others of "spamming" randomly and called well-known posters trolls, then claimed you weren't from the U.S., but then, oh wait, what you meant is that you ARE from here (LA). So while your efforts to be an inflammatory troll have failed, you have without a doubt been attempting to troll this board.

I got a nice concussion when I was thrown off of a polo pony into a fence. Also broke my nose and shoulder... not fun times

pirate00 12-29-2007 10:39 PM

i'd tell you, but i don't really remember what happened. why, you ask? because I had a f%$@*ng CONCUSSION, you insensitive hack! No really, it was 2 years ago during a seizure in my kitchen. It was from stress and lack of sleep, not epilpesy.

KappaKittyCat 12-31-2007 03:16 PM

I recently learned that multiple concussions over the course of childhood can lead to seizure disorders later in life. *shudder* A friend's husband has started having convulsions and they think it's from his playing football as a youth. He had four or five concussions growing up. Now he'll be on anticonvulsants for the rest of his life and he has to pay a higher premium for car insurance.

Fortunately I've only ever had one - from a slip and fall on my kitchen floor - and it was mild.

Also, the keeping the person awake for 24 hours line isn't true. Lack of sleep is only going to hurt, not help. The right thing to do is try to wake the person every 2-3 hours to make sure they regain consciousness. If they don't, then take them back to the ER.

I babysitting for my sister while she was at work, it was just getting dark, and my niece, she was 6 or 7 yrs, and I headed for a convenience store about two blocks from their home. My sister and her daughter did it often, so it seemed no big deal.
While crossing a street at the corner in beach town, I looked up, saw a car with its lights out stopped mid block. We'd already stepped into the roadway.
The driver put on his lights, I yelled to my niece to run, and the car accelerated, hitting me. After stepping out of the car, the driver got back in and drove off.
I suffered a concussion, leg and knee injuries.
When the ambulance arrived, they were caring for me, and thought when I was saying my niece---I meant knees. I repeated it en route to the hospital, and one of the attendants actually laughed.
Concussion, injuries, I told the screening nurse no one was touching me until I knew where my niece was. She asked the ambulance attendants, and they didn't know, and officers on scene didn't know I'd been with someone. They canvassed the area and learned my niece was in the care of one of my sister's neighbors and she'd left a note on the door of my sister's place.
The nurse advised me my niece had been found, and then, injuries were treated. My sister, a nurse at another hospital, was allowed off shift, came over to the hospital where I was and I was just relieved I could tell her where her daughter was.
Concussion: My sister woke me several times during the night, checking on me.
The driver: never found

Carnation, do they teach how to take a fall in wrestling? Honestly, I don't know, b/c my high school didn't even have wrestling until some time after I had graduated.

Anyway, you should have grabbed the nearest folding chair. That would have definitely resulted in a DQ. ;)
