Second Life?

Is anyone on here into this, or do you know anybody that is?

I don't get it.

scbelle 12-06-2007 12:43 PM

I had a client last year who was into a site like this (I don't know if it was Second Life or There.com). It caused a lot of problems for him, mainly because he was a 19 year old kid who didn't like his life as a private in the Army and became immersed in his own little world... literally. He started missing formations, spending all time he had free on the computer, and withdrawing from friends. He was command-ordered to come to the counseling center, so if his real-life didn't suck before, it totally started to at that point in time. I don't get these sites, either.

There was an article in my local newspaper recently about a disabled woman who had her account hacked and was being harassed and threatened IRL by some of her fellow Second Lifers.

AlphaFrog 12-06-2007 12:55 PM

I had to google to figure out what y'all were talking about. Weird, Weird, Weird.

GC is as much of a 2nd Life as I need.

Leslie Anne 12-06-2007 01:56 PM

One of my professors mentioned Second Life about 6 months ago so I tried it. It's weird and I ended up closing my account after about 2 weeks.

People can get really addicted to it but, to me, it just seemed like an enormous set of elaborately decorated chat rooms where you can fly around.

The only part I liked was creating my "look." (You can look like just about anything.) It was fun for about 15 minutes. I did some scavenger hunts too and won some fake money....yawn.

Apparently you can "buy" or make things and sell them and if you have enough money you can buy property and design it anyway you want. I don't know. It just didn't grab me. I spent most of my time literally crashing into people, apologizing and then saying, "I'm sorry, I don't speak Portugese."

ETA: I think it mostly appeals to people who are into RPGs.

AlethiaSi 12-06-2007 02:13 PM

Yeah, I was wondering what kind of games there were like the one that was featured on an episode of Law & order. I signed up... but I couldn't figure the damn thing out, plus I think my computer was too slow for it anyway. Deleted it because I didn't get the point.

AF I agree, GC is more than I need! lol

Pope 12-06-2007 03:34 PM

Oh, I thought this was a completely different topic.

Google is my friend.

What an unusual way to spend your first life.

EEKappa 12-06-2007 03:54 PM

Is this what was featured on CSI-NY? Like The Sims meets MySpace on acid?

I barely enough days in the week my first life, and adding a second one wouldn't help.

FSUZeta 12-07-2007 08:59 AM

eekappa, i was just going to ask if this is like "the sims", except the player in the sim character. strange.

SthrnZeta 12-07-2007 12:36 PM

I can't help but think of Dwight Schrute on the Office when I hear about this game. And THAT makes me not want to play. Didn't his second life HAVE a second life...? LOL.

Kevin 12-07-2007 01:01 PM

Stay away. I know people who have been sucked in by these things. I've seen jobs lost and marriages ruined. Stay away.

LOL, this was my first thought when I saw the title on the thread. I really thought it was something just made up for that episode for "The Office". So is that how it really looks/works? Waaaayyyy too fake/real, then, for me to handle. I still prefer the look of Atari games to the frighteningly real-looking stuff today...

The only video games I play are the Zelda series, and I won't play the 64/Gamecube/Wii versions unless someone else is in the room with me. It's so real looking, it creeps me out. I especially hate underwater stuff.

Wow, so when do you have time to take care of your family and job?

Says the guy who had his store robbed, and double the posts. Brilliant.

I had someone on my LiveJournal Friends List who made it a point to have a DAILY 'Fashion Show' for her freaking SL Paper Dolls. She'd go into detail about each outfit and was so excited in her descriptions. It went beyond strange.

I was just about to de-friend her until one of her friends in Iraq told her to put the pictures behind a cut.

I'm sorry, if you're one of my friends and you're into RPG, be prepared to get a lot of shit from me.

sick burn, Tommy

I would suggest saying it yourself real quiet before you say it out loud . . .

I actually wrote a big article on Second Life this time last year for my International Law class, because Second Life really pushes the limits in respect to jurisdiction and presents some really interesting issues because Second Life acknowledges that all of the content users create is their own intellectual property as opposed to Worlds of Warcraft, which says its theirs. I actually spoke with the guy at American Apparel responsible for taking them into Second Life (they were the first major company to take up residence there), and a lot of the copyright and trademark issues are really interesting. Also, there is a woman named Anshe Chung who purportedly made well over a million dollars in profits from the buying and selling of Second Life properties. Lastly, and perhaps the most interesting...there is a massive push for the recognition of virtual property as something distinct from intellectual or real or personal property, protecting things such as an email address or land owned in a virtual world. Why you might ask? A few years ago a kid that was gold farming (playing with virtual weapons in Worlds of Warcraft to increase their value then sell it off) killed someone who borrowed his virtual sword then sold it.

I don't play video games whatsoever (except maybe wii) and never had more than a gameboy, so all of this stuff amuses me. I do have a SL screen name (Jarvik Karski), but I've not played it since last year when I was writing this piece, and I could never figure it out.

ms_gwyn 01-01-2008 03:59 AM

I actually have 3 friends who are very heavy into SL...

1 is heavy on the fashion side of SL the other 2 are very heavy into consutling and providing office space and the like.

I don't understand it...not into it...but meh...

but I am into RPGs....and I have never played WoW. KoL is enough RPG for me, thank you very much.

preciousjeni 01-01-2008 01:28 PM

In a career development certification course I was taking last year and this year, they talked about SL as the future of interviewing and such. I was like umm probably not, y'all. They had us create accounts and all. I'm not impressed.

me to...I'm  about all this...how do you "sell" virtual property and make "real" money??...so people are really paying for this property...

KSUViolet06 01-01-2008 03:02 PM

I knew nothing about this until I saw something on TV about it. The idea of people paying REAL money for VIRTUAL things is just not cool to me.

Games are fun, but this just seems like something that a person who isn't happy with real life could get WAY too into.

Senusret I 01-01-2008 03:27 PM

I joined last night (while the SVU episode inspired by Second Life was on) and all I could do was fly. That was cool. But otherwise I can't get into it. Will probably uninstall it tonight.

tld221 01-01-2008 03:30 PM
