"Frat" vs. "Fraternity"
I see a lot of people on here use "frat" even though I thought that was a strictly GDI term. Are there others on here that only say fraternity as well?
|
It all depends on the type of fraternity and the context.
I call NPHC fraternities "frat" sometimes and they often refer to each other as such. |

I know some GDI's love to be called GDI's and some don't for the 'god damn' implication. I use the term 'frat' when speaking to my brothers, however when I speak to outsiders, especially those who don't seem to 'get' the Greek system, I say fraternity just to leave the 'frat' connotation out of the mix. At my chapter, I was kind of a nazi about this. If I saw a member calling us a 'frat' to a pledge, I would step in and explain how we were not a 'frat.' Of course, some fraternities are a 'frat' and all fraternities have 'frat' chapters, and well if they want to use it, more power to them!

I personally feel it's a matter of who's saying it. A lot of my friends use frat just because it's quicker to say than fraternity - yes, a whole three syllables longer I realize, but still.

How long before someone brings up the "You wouldn't call your country...." example???

It may take another n00b and a year or two, but it will happen.;):D As the frat/fraternity debate grows longer, the probability of a comparison involving "country" approaches one. - AlphaFrog's Law #2 |
My farternity chapter uses "fraternity" and we call each other out when one of calls us a "frat." I like the country analogy.

AF, I was hoping someone would call them out before anyone actually brought it up, but, like you, I wouldn't be surprised if it still comes up.
And even if this topic was discussed before, I'm sure it was boring the first time around... Lame thread to begin with IMO. |

And whether you like the country analogy doesn't really make it any better an analogy. It's a stupid analogy because it compares apples and oranges. However much you may dislike the word "frat," that word is not and never has been considered an obscenity. |

And wow, AF, within 3 minutes of your prediction! That must be a record! ETA: And I wondered about the "PhiGam" thing too when I first saw the username, the FIJIs on my campus were militant about ONLY being called FIJI. |

You wouldn't call your country a "cunt."
You wouldn't call your farternity a "fart." I can see clearly now the rain is gone. |

I know the history behind the name Fiji but still don't like it, it sounds goofy. |
