Don't let this one go!

Hello Kappas,

I'm very much a lurker, not an active poster. I'm an Alpha Gam at that so I apologize for intruding on your forum. I surf eBay a lot looking at antique jewelry and ran up on this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/1909-Gold-Kappa-...QQcmdZViewItem
. It certainly looks authentic, and if this were an Alpha Gam item I'd give a LOT for it. It looks like it could be a priceless piece of history for you. Just thought I'd point it out--I certainly hope a Kappa gets it. I'm not the seller or affiliated with them in any way. I'd just hate to see a piece of history like this in the wrong hands.

If the link doesn't work it's Item #270192458924, "1909 Gold Kappa Kappa Gamma Fraternity Pin w/Paper".

Thanks! It is beautiful, and we're on it. :)

Fleur de Lis 11-30-2007 12:00 PM

Wow, it even has the certificate with it! This shows why it's so important to let family know exactly what to do with your badge if you pass away.

LucyKKG 01-20-2008 12:45 AM

Ah! It almost causes me physical pain to see badges on E-bay. There are FOUR right now. *cries* One of them is the same as mine, too, so it makes me a little bit more sad.

SWTXBelle 01-20-2008 09:24 AM

Sure hope a Kappa got that historical badge.

Several badges on Ebay right now:

What's weird is that a lot of these sellers start the bidding wa-a-a-ay above the price of a new one. I understand why (don't know if they have sold any that started out high), but I just think it's silly. I saw one of our recognition badges (which costs $6.50 for GF, $22 for 10K) go for as much as one of our regular badges!!!

Not weird, they're just mistakenly informed that Kappas will pay anything for badges.

Oh hey, I bet you ladies can answer this question. I found a 50-year member pin at an antique store, and I bought it because it shouldn't be in there. Should I send it to someone at HQ? I know they would want a badge but what about a 50 yr pin?

It's perfectly okay for you to keep it! Even though you aren't a 50-year-Kappa (yet ;) ) you are keeping it within the Kappa family, and that's what the Keepers strive for.

LucyKKG 01-30-2008 08:58 PM

What is this?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Vintage-Kappa-Ka...QQcmdZViewItem

It looks like the 50-yr pin but there are 3 pearls instead of the number 50. Hmmm...

EEKappa 02-04-2008 05:12 PM

Hmm... and ours aren't sterling silver either. It's very pretty, but I'm wondering how the seller listed it as a Kappa pin, with no markings.

KlutzyKappa 02-04-2008 11:25 PM

Yeah, I tried looking for anything like it in A History 2000, but didn't find anything. I'm thinking it's a misinformed seller... or one who just doesn't care

KlutzyKappa 02-05-2008 08:00 PM

I found something really similar on Herff Jones's site... only difference I can see is that it doesn't have the pearls...

http://www.hjgreek.com/index.cfm?eve...roduct_ID=7729

(and there's a link to a Fleur de Lis pin with 3 pearls on their site too... there just isn't a picture.)

LucyKKG 02-11-2008 03:51 AM

Ahhh! I bid on an all pearl badge from the 40's but I keep getting out bid. It isn't that expensive right now (about $50) but I can't spend that much on it. I'm pretty sure the person I'm betting against isn't a Kappa. Ahhh!

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=110222319878

Anyone?

KlutzyKappa 02-11-2008 04:39 AM

I wish I could help! Any Keepers out there?

I was thinking about bidding on this one as well and am "watching" it (guess I'll be getting an update soon since the bidding will be done in a couple of hours). Although I'd prefer one with sapphires and pearls, this one is pretty, too. I figured I won't find my original one until I replace it.:p

I think a new all-pearl one is in the $90 range, so this would be a bargain at $50.

elleyk5187 02-27-2008 12:10 PM

being that i am a new member (will be initiated this weekend!!! i am so so so excited. this week has been AMAZING so far), the prices are still fresh in my head & the all pearl one is roughly $90. i got the sapphire & pearl one, even though my dream one was the sapphire & diamond badge. :) i thought i would be able to persuade my mom, as she is a kappa & it is something she holds close to her heart, but no such luck. :( i guess i'll just have to wait until i can buy it on my own.

i have grown up to my mom making references to kappa, singing songs, doing the knock on my door in the mornings(without me realizing what it was), having fleur di lis wallpaper in our bathrooms, etc. so i know how important badges are because my mom wouldn't let me put it on & always said if anything ever happened to her it had to be buried with her or sent back to HQ. the other day i got the bright idea to go on ebay to see whether there were any kappa badges up there & i was shocked to see 4 current listings. does headquarters happen to try and get ahold of these or is it up to one of us to buy it?

anyway, i am so excited to finally wear the golden key like my mom. & i know my mom is just as excited (if not more) as i am. she always told me to keep my options open & that it didn't matter where i ended up, just as long as i was happy...but deep down i know she REALLY wanted me to go kappa.

Welcome elley! :) We do have a badge rescue group in place, called the Keepers of the Key. If you would like more information, let me know and I'd be more than happy to PM you about them.

Congratulations on your initiation this weekend! That's such a special bond you'll always share with your mom. My older sister is also a Kappa and I know it helped bring us closer together.

Kappamd 02-27-2008 02:38 PM

Congratulations on your upcoming initiation elley! Mine truly was an experience I will carry in my heart for the rest of my life.

ISU, could you PM me about Keepers of the Key? It's something I would love to know more about. It makes me sad every time I see a badge on ebay going to or being sold by a non-Kappa.
