Gift for a NEO?

A very good family friend called a few days ago, and asked if we could fly to his school in Feb for a 'school thing'. He wouldnt really elaborate for me what it was, but it would nice if we flew out. I am going ASSUME, that it some kind of Neophyte show because he is not due to graduate Feb and why else would he be so secretive about it. My question is there a generic greek gift I could get it him. I have a good ideal of which franternity he would mostly likely try to cross...but that would be another assumption. We would really like to get a small gift, what can we get him? Or is that taboo for a non-greek to buy a greek a greek present?

A non-greek can certainly purchase gifts.

But I wouldn't buy SHIT until he told you what you are spending your hard earned money on a plane ticket for.

Ask his parents. I would, at least.

The greek scenario doesn't sound plausible to me. Maybe he's getting married.

DSTCHAOS 11-25-2007 08:18 PM

A "school thing" sounds way too secretive to be getting married. This is strange.

Would it be inappropriate to just buy a generic gift basket or something that could be a general congratulations on whatever it is?

or a better cover up than saying a "personal thing."

Indeed. Then it would be his fault if he doesn't get a good wedding gift. :D

Extremely.

OOhsoflyDELTA#9 11-25-2007 11:50 PM

Feb is too late for Fall and too early for the Spring isn't it?....

Senusret I 11-25-2007 11:51 PM

^^^ the school COULD be on the quarter or trimester system. I know folks who crossed mad early at Ohio when I visited there.

ETA: But then again, I think November is a little early to KNOW you'll be a member by then. So never mind.

This is what makes it implausible to me. But then we are assuming HPHC. Could someone from a LGLO enlighten us as to if this possible?

Ilaria Ame 11-26-2007 12:17 AM

i guess it's possible that it's a greek thing, but i seriously doubt it. having someone fly out for a probate show, and TELLING them about 3 months in advance makes it seem unlikely to me. maybe a generic gift would be better, and i agree with previous posters--i'd need more detail before i bought a plane ticket!!!

Telly10 11-26-2007 12:06 PM

Well, I guess I will hold off on buying anything....but I doubt it's for a wedding..I hope...If he was going to be a NEO it would be for a NHPC, but if the timing is off for most schools.. I guess we will go back to the drawing board on trying to figure out why he wants us to fly out there..we don't press him to hard and ruin his 'surprise'. We also know he wouldnt have us fly out there if this 'thing' wasnt important to him. Thanks for everyone's help!

MzJ25 11-26-2007 12:30 PM

I think you need to flat out ask him what's going on. I'm sorry but I can not be out here purchasing plane tickets all willy nilly. Damn sure not buying any and you can't even tell me what it's for. Plane tickets are NOT cheap.

My school is on quarters and we go back January 7th(i think) until like the end of March.

Something else has to be going on.

IsobelS 11-26-2007 03:59 PM

Wow I would ask him before making the commitment to fly out there and everything. Unless he is a REALLY close friend or something like that.

But anyway, I think a good generic gift is a picture frame or something. Everybody could use picture frames, and he can use it to remember his big event. Plus he could get it engraved with his letters if it is really a greek thing.

It's not the timing for the school. There can be a Feb. (WTR) line. It's our processes that makes it unrealistic. Heck, at this point the chapter hasn't made any decisions about who will be on line unless he is involved in an illegal process.
