You didn't post anything to start conversation. You just did your usual post-a-bunch-of-links post.

It's NEVER too early to start talking college basketball!!!! Sure, football season's been wacky this year, but it's just not basketball.

There seems to be a few more early-season tournaments this year though. I wonder how long it will take until all we have are the Old Spice/Coaches for Cancer/Maui/NIT/Great Alaska/so forth and so on games in November?

ZTABullwinkle 11-26-2007 06:29 PM

I love my Duke Basketball. So, my family was able to catch the games from their tournament.

Is anyone else surprised that there have been so many "upsets" so far? This may lead to an up and down season like college football has been.

I need to find out if there are still student tickets for Georgetown-ODU on Wednesday night.

Which is a way of starting a thread.
I just provided the facts for others to talk about.

Seems to have worked;):)

BTB: What is your impute on this basketball thread? Favorite team?
I am not sure yet as my home team is not Div 1 and my girl-friends team seems to still be recovering from ,
IIRC correctly, some sanctions.

Could be
1) A way to try to get some attention from football
2) A way to get some $$$$ ;):D:)

Or we can follow the football model and have conversations on/about games and the impact on the updated polls.;)

And then comes March Madness!:D:)

And yes, if I have a comment or two on the subject matter I will post them as well.:)

Yes but since we are all presumably college educated we know how to FIND the polls all by ourselves.

Not everyone seems to be able (or just perhaps willing) to navigate to web. :(
And why have to find them if they are provided for you?

And if that is the only thing that bothers you in the whole of GC, then just
do not look at them.:D:)

Go Kentucky!

Poor Hawaii Basketball. They've been playing playing second fiddle to the football team and will probably continue to do so. Oh well. They suck anyway.

I'm not a NCAA Basketball fan until it comes time for March Madness, anyway. Brackets are always fun.

Velocity_14 12-05-2007 10:31 PM

I am and always will be a George Mason Patriot! What I wouldn't give to have another season like 2006 when we went to Final Four. Sigh.

That was amazing...I will ALWAYS remember that Spring! But - we're 7-3 now, and a quick search shows that at this week then we were 5-3, so there's plenty of time to bring back the kryptonite ;) I don't even like basketball, but I do like to keep an eye out when its my school!

SthrnZeta 12-12-2007 03:52 PM

Cardinal, I had no idea you were a Patriot too! Awesome! I haven't been around GC for very long, what org are you a member of? And by your age, our times at Mason probably overlapped :)

"I be on that kryptonite!"

And I loved the Christmas pic with the Redskin jerseys. Very nice!

I saw a very simular study on football.
Seems to be a problem with the "big" sports.

NutBrnHair 03-18-2008 01:48 PM

FYI

UT Lady Vols have an excellent graduation rate.

Coach Summitt has a 100 percent graduation rate for all Lady Vols who have completed their eligibility at Tennessee.

I think the men's program is around 75% at Tennessee.

Sorry, no.
Quote:

Two of the No. 2 seeds, Tennessee and Texas, graduated only 33 percent of their players for the period studied. The other second seeds, Georgetown and Duke, had success rates of 82 percent and 67 percent, respectively.

Yikes...that is bad!

I glanced at this stat when researching the Lady Vols...

The University of Tennessee men’s and women’s athletics departments announced Wednesday a graduation success rate of 75 percent for student-athletes who entered the university during the 2000-01 school year.

I see now that it's all of the athletes together -- love it how they use the females to raise the stats!

TSteven 03-19-2008 03:35 PM

I wonder if the study took into account the number of student-athletes that leave school early to play in the NBA? I know that the NCAA does.

For example, UK's 2008 Senior class will have a 50% graduation rate. However, two members of this class left college early to play in the NBA. Of the remaining two student-athletes, both will graduate.

One could spend some time with a search engine looking at subjects like:
student-athletes graduation rates et al.;)

I am sure of that. Been there done that.

However, my concern lies with the NCAA's studies. The NCAA has the ability to limit the number of scholarships a school may offer in a year in any given sport based on six year graduation rates. Both within the sport and based on the school's overall student-athlete graduation rate.

"When you see Kentucky's fans, you just wonder. You think how wonderful it would be to go to their school. You wish you could trade places for a day, just so you could experience that feeling." - UCLA player Kris Johnson
