Choosing a Line Name

I am trying to find good line names for both my littles :-( I know no one can help me since they dont know them but I just want to find names that sound cool, look good on a cross jacket and fits their personality. Very frustrating. Any suggestions?

Why aren't you asking ladies in your own chapter for help with such a personal matter?

Also, the fact that you're looking for names that "sound cool, look good on a cross jacket" kind of bothers me. That's not what nicknames, line names, etc. are about (in my opinion).

How about not coming up with line names at all?

Yeah for real. That IS disturbing.

A line name is a special gift and should have meaning to the individual who receives it. If you can't come up with something meaningful, ask your chapter sisters.

if you cant come up with anything meaningful, you probably havent spent enough time with them. or know them well enough.

which adds to my list of concerns on this matter.

I never received a line name when I pledged more than 17 years ago.

But I'm cool.

And I make my jackets look good.

So if your line name is Nupeoleon, then why is your username Nupeolean?

So... Did you ever find line names for them???? I really would like to know.:)

Finer Woman10-A-91 11-25-2007 06:04 PM

It sounds to me like this is something you are just trying to "make up" as you will...without a real historical or cultural tie in to your organization. If this is the case, why bother with "choosing a line name"? Surely, your new members will be able to function just fine without "line names".

I am almost 17 years in my Sorority and I don't plaster my line name all over my para at this stage in my life. The only sorority sisters who care/will care are those who follow the legacy of my initiating chapter and those who I personally have a hand in making.

"Line" is the term used to describe the members of a new member class in NPHC and cultural-based Greek organizations.

Prior to joining GC, my knowledge of terms used by NPHC and cultural-based Greek orgs. was very limited as my campus did not have any of them.

ETA: boo, OTW beat me to it.

a line name is a name given to a pledge at the end of their pledge process/intake period. the name tends to describe the pledge as they were during that time, or their personality, or something that is relevant to that chapter.

traditionally, NPHC orgs give/use line names, but i believe Latino/Asian/multicultural greeks use them too. (ETA: ok, most of them, if not all, do. i recall KPL, for instance, not having line names, but names nonetheless, in the fashion of NPC orgs)

im sure NPC/IFC orgs give nicknames and what not in similar fashion, but it may not be the standard practice.

i believe what many posters are getting at in reference to the OP is that she wants names that "sound cool and look good on a jacket." line names mean a lot more to people who have/earn them than the name "sounding/looking cool." furthermore, since we dont know the girls to be named, it would be hard for us to suggest anything. if anything, if the OP cant think of a name for these girls, she should a. not be naming them, and b. learn something about them so she could name them c. should she be naming them at all?

I think it varies. In my line, it was the big brother and pledge educator working together to come up with names. In later years, it's been just the big brother.

I'm guilty to that. I altered mine a little bit to make it more appealing to an online message board, not knowing who was going to be seeing my info and everything. I thought about changing it but I didn't want to have to explain myself to prying minds.

To the OP:
A good idea would be "Your Name Here" on the back of someone's jacket or hoodie. If you all live the high principles of sisterhood, it would become a great recruitment tool.

That's a great idea for recruitment/rush shirts. I've never seen something like that on a jacket though, particularly a line jacket.

Wayle...I've been busy - got me a national board position and all. ;) I'm keeping a bit of a low profile before I go and say something that'll get me in trouble. Glad to see you've been on top of things around here, though!

Well aside from all of the super bitchy replies, which I see are common on here, I already had spoken to my chapter and I had a few that I was thinking of but maybe I should have been more clear with what I wanted and I have no idea how other organizations choose theirs but for us we try to have it be pretty meaningful but what I was looking for was more of a theme to choose from. Anyway I figured them out a while ago and they fit perfectly. There should be a forum on here though for why everyone on here always answers everything so defensively, instead of trying to help people there is nothing but sarcasm and immaturity

Girl, our line "names" were a paragraph long rhyme--and they weren't pretty. And we could pick a couple of innocuous words from it to use on 'nalia, but never disclose the whole "name." We also could not disclose our ship's name, just the initials, except to other chapter sorors.

Because to many of us line names are such a personal chapter thing that we cannot fathom why you would ask the question here. Not being bitchy, just honest.

I got a a few ideas...

1. Smokey, Dopey and Doc

2. Rent their shirts out to buig corporations: one of them can can be called FedEx, the other Staples, and so on....just make sure it's not rented out to a company going under like Enron or that person will be hard pressed to come up with a new line name

3. Throw some silverware down some stairs and name them.....oh....wait that's an old racist joke....

4. Take the prefixes La, Sha and suffixes na and qua.....oh wait that's another racist joke....dammmit...

5. Ask them what their MySpace creen name is and try that.

6. Watch a few episodes of American Gladiator and use those names

7. If that doesn't work, the XFL has a few left over jerseys with crazy names that may be up for grabs.

8. Name them after Outkast songs.

9. Still thinking...nothing is coming to me.......

10. The last one that I can think of......maybe get to know your littles and try naming tham after what their personality is.....

BTW.....not trying to be snarky....

**snicker**

P.S. ROFL @ Noah's Ark......

Trying to figure out why you came back here are *itcy-like with this response. Whether you were looking for a name or a theme, no one on here could help you because we are not in your organization and don't know the women pledging. DUH! And how one org chooses line names has nothing to do with how your org does it. Do YOU and not what everyone else is doing;)
