Songs that have Significance...

Which songs have significance to you? i.e., harbor memories...please write the song title, who it's by, and if you want, what it means to you!

I"ll go first...

"I will Be There" by 112--our (my bf and I) song--he dedicated it to me on the radio, b/c before we got together, I had just broken up with my ex, who was a jerk...I couldn't trust anyone...I felt that all guys were a$$es. The lyrics are so beautiful...and was so RIGHT for my situation.

"Hero" by Mariah Carey--my first boyfriend and I's song...I cry whenever I hear this--I don't think I could find a more "perfect" song for a "first love"!

"With or Without You" by U2--my first dance...I love the song itself, too--do you all remember that it was played during Ross and Rachel's breakup on "Friends"?

"Say It" by Voices of Theory--well let's just say I have very emotional memories w/this one...involves a creep of an ex http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/mad.gif

BTW, I found an excellent website which has many lyrics of songs--http://lyrics.astraweb.com/--I was so happy, finally a site which has the right lyrics!!

"Lover Lay Down" Dave Matthews "I will wait for no one but you..." OUCH. My ex and I danced to this in my living room the last time we were trying to reconcile (long story, basically a 10 year rela.) as we had both heard this song and every single word applies to us.

"Shame" and "What do I have to Do?" - Stabbing Westward. Trying to get over the ex from above. Everytime I hear these songs its like a knife to my heart--the words are so dead on. If you don't know the songs and you've ever been completely heartbroken, GO LISTEN TO THEM. I'll refrain from posting the words here but I really want to. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

"Nasty Girl" I think its Vanity. OLD song Greek Week 1989. Dancing on the lawn of the KA house with a guy I'd been crushing on FOREVER--we were together from that night on for about 9 months. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

"In your Eyes" from Say Anything. Same guy as above, we saw the movie together, it made a big impression.

"Somebody" Depeche Mode. It perfectly explains what I've wanted in my life since I first heard it at the age of 14.

"Unforgettable" Natalie and Nat King Cole. Reminds me of my Grandma. I cry ever time I hear it.

SO MANY OTHERS. I will stop with these. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Tim McGraw's "My Best Friend" http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif That song is awesome and sort of a special thing with my boyfriend and I because we were best friends before we became a couple.

bebe_cHiCk17 04-09-2001 09:24 PM

*It's All Because of You by All 4 One
Steven (this guy i used to talk to) burned it for me, it was cute, i liked him, but he's not a one girl type of guy which sucks!

*You Never Even Called Me By My Name by David Allen Coe
That song was on repeat (literally) at our New Years 2001 party.. and so that song brings back good memories

newbie 04-09-2001 09:27 PM

Oh Amy, I'm gonna go and see if I can find the lyrics from the website that I posted above!! Wow, those songs must have meant a lot to you http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif. "Unforgettable" is such a lovely song--that's actually my parent's song!!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif I like Depeche Mode, too!

OK, since you guys had so much detail (which is good!) in your postings, lemme go back and I'll edit mine!

33girl 04-09-2001 09:56 PM

Hmmm, let's see how deep I want to go into the pit o' college memories....

"Forever Your Girl" by Paula Abdul - my little and I danced solo to this one night at a club (tap dancing and all) so this is our fave song!!

"Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" by Journey & "Hard to Say I'm Sorry/Get Away" by Chicago - used to always be the last songs of the night at our favorite bar my senior year of college.

"One More Try" by George Michael - the guy who we always almost got together, but not quite. It's probably a good thing we didn't (even though I would be filthy stinking rich if we had).

"Sign Your Name" by Terence Trent D'Arby - ummm, errr, uhh, how can I say this? Just let me state when I hear this song, the memories it brings back make me have to pour ice down my shirt & smoke a cigarette. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

IowaHawkeye 04-09-2001 10:37 PM

"You Move Me" by Garth Brooks - the words ar ejust so amazing and everytime i hear it i get tears in my eyes - its about someone who's always there for you supporting you and loving you - its mine and my biological sister Sara's song :-D

"This I Promise You" by N'SYNC - i know know - its a boy band - but my boyfriend Matt sang me to sleep with this song once when we were first starting out becuase i was really scared to start anything with him becuase i was coming off a really bad relationship - the song jus totally touches home with me :-)

newbie 04-09-2001 10:39 PM

First things first, 33girl-I LOVE CHICAGO! I had the opportunity to go see them in concert during spring break. Unfortunately, not having Peter there wasn't the same, but they're still awesome!

Okay..my songs:

*The Time of My Life*: The theme from Dirty Dancing was our Senior Prom song. Most HS were going for songs that were popular on the radio, but we went 80s! To this day when I hear that song on the radio I think of that night. It was such an appropriate song to end high school!

*Twisted* by Keith Sweat, *You Were Meant For Me* by Jewel, *My Boo* by the GhostTown DJs, *and Do You Miss Me?* by Jocelyn Enriquez: all remind me of senior year in high school

*I'm Alright* by JoDee Messina: You know how, on Ally McBeal, Tracey Ullman encourages everyone to have a "THEME SONG"? That song gets me through every time Brady has to leave on patrol. It's such a wonderful song to play in the car during traffic!

And Brady and I don't really have "an official song"...yet. We've been together a little over a year, but I think we've gone through many songs...especially the ones that come on the radio a lot--like *This I Promise You*.

We met one night over Margaritas, so he jokes that if we do get married one day, we'll be dancing to Jimmy Buffet's "MARGARITAVILLE" for our first dance.

Hmm..now y'all are going to have to look these up on satelight b/c i doubt you have heard them...

"Galieo" by the indido girls (words) "how long till my soul gets this right, can any human being ever reach the highest light"

stevie nicks "Landslide"..."well i've been afraid of changing cause i built my life around you...but time makes you bolder even children get older and I'm getting older too...Oh, take my love, take it down
Climb a mountain and turn around If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills Well the landslide will bring it down If you see my reflection in the snow covered hills Well the landslide will bring it down

Smile Pep Charm Style that's what we have...but most of all you'll love our laugh (whooaa)

IowaHawkeye 04-10-2001 05:27 AM

DBPM04 - another fabulous song i LOVE by the indigo girls is "The Power of Two" it has an excellent almost sisterhood/friendship feel to it :-D

Ideal08 04-10-2001 09:29 AM

Now and Forever, by Carol something or other, I think. This song is in the movie A League of Their Own, at the very beginning.

Anyway, the lyrics tell the story of me and my closest friends from college. I get teary eyed whenever I hear it.

juniorgrrl 04-10-2001 09:51 AM

How Sweet it is (to be loved by you), done by James Taylor, off his Greatest hits album - So many nights in the dorm slow dancing to that one http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Love and Luck by Jimmy Buffett - When we're having troubles, it helps bring us up, when we're doing well, it reminds us how happy we are. "With a little love and luck, we will get by..."

I Can't Tell you Why by The Eagles - "Look at us baby, up all night, tearing our love apart. Weren't we the same two people who lived through years in the dark? Every time I try to walk away, Something makes me turn around and stay, and I can't tell you why...Nothin's wrong as far as I can see, we make love harder than it has to be, and I can't tell you why..." - hearing that song when we were having some tough times helped slap us back into reality and realize that we were meant to be together and that we were just being stupid

shadokat 04-10-2001 02:56 PM

I could go on and on...

"Doin' It" by L.L. Cool J. We danced to this and "No Diggity" about 300 times one summer at college.

"Send Me On My Way" by Rusted Root. Again, it is like *the* song for my friends at this one bar.

"These Are Days" by 10,000 Maniacs. It's my pledge class song.

"More Than Words" by Extreme. High school boyfriend's song http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

amycat412 04-10-2001 04:01 PM

"more than word to show you feel that my love for you is real..." OMG I used to LOVE that song...senior year in college!

Chris Gaines - "That's the way I remember it"

It's only natural with time, details can somehow slip your mind, something so sweet, though incomplete, you fill the spaces in between. It will never be that way again, maybe it wasn't way back then, but to my heart and soul... this is the way the story has to be told.

Reminds me of someone remembering all the good times she had in college. She can't remember everything but she fills in the spaces and tells someone the story of the best part of her life.

When I finally write a screen play portraying greek life POSITIVELY... that will be the theme song!

Looking forward to it newbie!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

By the way, one of my favorite songs is one that my ex-boyfriend and I listened to in college. "Rebecca Lynn" - it's a slow country song by Bryan White. It was special to me because my ex and I both loved it, which was rare considering that he hated nearly every other country song in existence! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Another favorite is "Sweet Baby James" by James Taylor. My mom used to sing it to my brother (James is his first name although he goes by Clay) when he was a baby. Kind of a sentimental favorite for me.

Also, when I want something to pick me up I listen to Jimmy Buffett. I love everything the man's ever done, but particularly "The Weather Is Here, Wish You Were Beautiful" and "Tryin' to Reason with Hurrican Season". Buffett's a genius, period. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Theta-cutie 04-10-2001 09:29 PM

Ahhh...Car, you know all about the "songs" that have meanings to me!!

To all GCs--hehe, there are many songs that have "significance" to me--but some are really too emotional, so I won't post those! but here are the ones that I will post...

"Hero"by Mariah Carey--last dance for 8th Grade Graduation--it was so sad--b/c this guy friend that I really liked, and he liked me back--we never got together, b/c we didn't want to "ruin the friendship." I actually cried during the playing of the song!

"With or Without You" by U2--arghh, just like Ross and Rachel on "Friends"--as Carolyn mentioned in her post--my bf called into a radio station, telling them to play it...saying he "couldn't live w/out me." Ha--the next day I see him kissing another girl. Well, this song has always caused some pain for me!

"I will Survive" by ???-my gosh, this has gotten me through after breaking up with asshole after asshole, LOL...I praise you whoever wrote this song!!

"Because the NIght" by 10,000 Maniacs--played at a club--a fiery, passionate song...led me to my current boyfriend, so it's "our song" http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Bubbles17,

Yes, "Car" is indeed Newbie...BTW it is not pronounced "car" as in an automobile (hehe)..but "care." Her real name is Carolyn.

OTW - My little and I go to see Chicago every summer!! It's such a nice time - a warm summer night (if we're lucky) out on the grass and the concert goes by so fast, it's like it's only 15 minutes long - so you have to play all the albums on the way home in the car. I love to go there and see such a wide range of ages, too.

"My Boo" and "Twisted" - DAMN! - I forgot all about those two!

TemptingNugget 04-11-2001 02:33 AM

GREAT POST! i gotta say one of the all time songs thats gonna stick with me, is me and my ex's song, 'falling is like this' by ani difranco, dont worry, barely anybody knows who she is..... anyways.... goes a lil somethin' like this....

you give me that look thats like laughing with liquid in your mouth, like youre choosing between chocking and spitting it all out, like youre trying to fight gravity on a planet that insists that love is like falling, and falling is like this.

feels like reckless driving when were talking, its fun while it lasts and its faster than walking, but no one is going to sympathize when we crash, theyll say you hit what you head for, you get what you ask, and well say we didnt know, no we didnt even try, one minute there was road beneath us and the next just sky

im sorry i cant help you. i cannot keep you safe.sorry i cant help myself so dont look at me that way. we cant fight gravity on a planet that insists that love is like falling and falling is like this.

LOL... i guess the lyrics are even more fitting now that shes my ex. *shrugs* all ani's songs are amazing, but this one always hits me the hardest.

I give praises to Gloria Gaynor for that song! I think that many women have felt Gloria's pain at least once in their lives.

You and I have the same taste in music, girl! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif I will listen to any and everything by Buffett...he's a god http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

When I was little, my aunt used to sing Sweet Baby James to me and play it on her guitar. I had forgotten about this until hearing someone play the Greatest Hits CD my freshman year of college. Its an awesome CD.

Lately, I've gotten into Carole King and Jackson Browne.

They just don't make music like they used to http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

It's kinda a new song but I love "RIGHT KIND OF WRONG" by Leann Rimes from Coyote Ugly.
"Loving you isn't really something I should do Shouldn't wanna spend my time with you
I should try to be strong But baby, you're the right kind of wrong" I don't know about some of you but this totally describes some of the guys I've fallen for...something about that bad boy/player image that makes them sooo desireable...<sigh>...

Sisterplum 04-12-2001 12:28 AM

Okay here's a few songs with significance to me:
*All my life* by K-ci and Jojo....that's mine and Art's song (my sweetie!). We danced to this for the first time at a bar in Ottawa while visiting my cousin!
*I will survive* by Gloria Gaynor.....every time a sister would break up with her man, we would play that song and sing it as loud as we can while dancing/hugging the sister! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
*Girls just wanna have fun* by Cyndi Lauper...that's our sorority song! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

I think's that's it....those are the most important to me! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Although, I think I may have to add *Because you loved me* by Celine Dion....that's the song my dad and I will be dancing to at my wedding!
