Convention 2008

I sure hope I can go - anyone else planning to try and attend?

tinydancer 11-06-2007 02:08 PM

Yes! I am planning to go.:)

SmartBlondeGPhB 11-06-2007 03:56 PM

Yes of course. It will be my 5th. :D

Lizz, we definitely need to meet while we are there!

SWTXBelle 11-06-2007 05:15 PM

It will be my second - I'm trying to get my mom to commit to go!

PeppyGPhiB 11-06-2007 07:34 PM

I'm planning to be there. It will be my first!

bejazd 11-06-2007 08:02 PM

You'll be blown away, Peppy, I promise! how exciting!

SWTXBelle 11-06-2007 08:17 PM

Sounds like we may have quite a little GC group at Convention!:D

GeekyPenguin 11-07-2007 09:01 PM

I really want to go because it's so close (I'll be back in Milwaukee then) and because I had such a blast at the one in Chicago, but I will be studying for that little quiz they make lawyers take to get a license next summer, so we'll have to see.

I just saw that your upcoming Convention is in Cincinnati at the Netherland Hotel. It is a beautiful, old, art-deco building, downtown across the street from Fountain Square. I see that it's operated by Hilton (used to be Omni). The Chi Omega Executive HQ was located in Carew Tower from 1972-1992, the 45 story structure which connects to the Netherland. There is lots of great shopping in Tower Place Mall (within the same complex). PLEASE take time to go to Hathaway's in the Carew Tower lobby. It's a lunch counter that is like going back in time! Most of the staff has worked there for years. Order a burger or at least a milkshake! Graeter's ice cream and Cincinnati chili (I prefer Skyline) are also musts.

Have a wonderful visit to the Queen City!

After I enjoyed Phoenix so much two years ago, I am totally going to Cinci! See you all there!

litlbear1072 01-18-2008 01:25 PM

Should I stay or should I go?

I took over as the President of the Toledo Alumnae Chapter this past November. I'm thinking it would be a great experience for me to go to Convention. And, since I live only a few hours away it would be convenient. Any thoughts or suggestions on going to Convention and if I do should I go for the whole thing?

SWTXBelle 01-18-2008 01:58 PM

GO! It is an incredible experience - you will learn a great deal, get excited for your upcoming chapter year, and meet wonderful sisters. If you can, go to the whole thing.

Cluey 01-18-2008 02:39 PM

I really, really want to go, but I am not sure that I am going to be able to attend. If plans change, though, I'll be sure to let y'all know! :)

If the chapter is in good standing, you should be able to go as the delegate. You would then have to go for everything.

But yes, you should go. :)

navane 01-21-2008 09:38 PM

My chapter recently approached me about attending as our delegate. So, pending that final decision, looks like I'll see you all there! :D

We are in good standing. I think it would be great to see Gamma Phi Beta "in action" so to speak. Hopefully I will get to meet you all there!

i think my mom and i are going to go together!!

candibear83 02-04-2008 09:23 AM

Packets?

Has anyone here received a "Call to Convention" Packet yet? I received the Memorandum with rates and fees, but I was wondering when the packet was going to be sent out!! If you have gotten one, please let me know so that I can call IH for one! I know they have the right mailing address so....

I am going to do everything I can to be at convention this year! It will be my third & I'm very excited!

In the January Buzz from IH, they said the packets would be coming soon. And they usually post the packet on the website at the same time they mail them out to people. I'm guessing they haven't been mailed yet.

I have been debating with myself for the past several days on whether or not I should post this...

But, my excitement has most definitely gotten the better of me. :) For any ladies who will be at convention, I would love to meet you. I'm going to be initiated as an AI at convention, on the 28th. :D I am completely thrilled and humbled by this, and of course incredibly excited. :)

Dgroulx 02-10-2008 04:38 PM

hello from Ottawa
longtime lurker just not a much of a writer
just wondering,
I've never been to a Convention or RLC or any official GPhiB thing like that... Have always wondered what it was like. Is it mostly meetings for Chapter and Intl Officers and such ? or is there stuff for an alumna to attend?

How does payment for attending Convention work? one all-inclusive price for accomodations/meals/registration fee or is all seperate?

Someone mentioned they were asked to be their Chapter's official "delegate". what does that entail other than voting as directed by your Chapter? would you have to make a presentation or something?will you get a discount on registration or some other benefit?

Alumnae Chapters can have delegates at convention who vote on all business and (therefore) attend all business sessions. They do not make any presentations unless they have been asked to help on a workshop or something (which most of those are doine by international officers). Crescent Circles do not have delegates at convention since they do not vote. There are no discounts for delegates to attend. I know that some alumnae chapters help pay the way for delegates but that can be quite pricey so I doubt it's something every chapter does.

When you pay, you pay for registration to IH. That can be full time or part time. I did part time in Phoenix since I had no job to do and with part time you can pick and choose what you go to. Then you buy your airfare to convention then separately you get your hotel room.

A large chunk of convention is official business of the sorority; electing council, voting on bylaws changes, etc. There is also a keynote speaker and usually workshops geard around running chapters. In the past, there have been separate workshops geared both for collegians and alumnae (and advisors). and of course, there is the Awards Banquet, Ritual, Pink Carnation and Confirmed Conventioneers. Usually all of the meals have something going on during them (lunches are usually Philanthropy and NPC; dinners are the things I mentioned already).

Congrats! That is awesome! I also initiated as an AI, but not at convention! The initiation ceremony there is so amazing....you're so lucky! I should be there, just need to get the OK from my boss to attend (99.9% change it won't be a problem).

SWTXBelle 02-22-2008 05:09 PM

That's incredible! Sure hope I can go!

mh1216 03-07-2008 12:29 AM

I'm planning on going too it will be my first one ever!!!! I'm so excited :)

GeekyPenguin 03-07-2008 12:33 AM

I really want to go, so cross your fingers I have a job offer before then so I can! :)

kchaptergphib 03-07-2008 12:48 AM

I went to Convention in Phoenix, and it was so fun, especially for a big greek dork like me. Again, $$ is kind of an issue, but I'm trying to justify the trip since it's only every-other year, and Indy is within driving distance of Chicago... so, more likely than not, I'll see you all there! I'm already collecting things for the Foundation's Opportunity Drawing.

Congratulations! My mom was initiated at the Chicago convention in 2004. It was amazing.

I'm planning on being there for at least part of this convention. It will be my 4th.

GeekyPenguin: I hope you can make it... it's been years since I've seen you! I'd love to catch up sometime. :)

Oh, if you're going for part I'll have to at least try and make it for the weekend - it has been years! Maybe we can convince kk_bama to make it up too!

gphiangel624 03-20-2008 11:06 PM

I'm going as my alumnae chapter delegate!!! I'm super excited! I went to Convention in DC in 2002 and haven't been able to go since, so this is an awesome opportunity!

SmartBlondeGPhB 03-21-2008 06:31 PM

It will be my 5th convention so I will finally get to walk in the confirmed conventioneers parade. :D:D

SmartBlondeGPhB 03-23-2008 08:49 PM

If anyone is looking for a roommate send me a pm and I'll put you in touch with a woman in Oregon who's going as the Portland AC delegate.

5Knowledge1913 04-03-2008 05:23 PM

I love convention time!

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. will convene in Orlando in July! I am too excited because this is my first Delta convention!

SWTXBelle 04-04-2008 01:44 PM

I'm bummed . . . no job means I've got the time to go to Convention, but not the money. :(

That's me at this point. I've got the excitement to go, but we tentatively have found a house. Now I won't have any money. :( I think I may have someone who can go as our chapter's delegate so that at least makes me a little happy.

navane 04-13-2008 04:04 PM

Ok! I am all registered for convention! :D

One of my sisters will be attending as a Chapter Adviser and I as the Alumnae Chapter President/Delegate. As is such, we both qualify for a "rebate". I just mentioned this to her; but thought to mention it here for everyone's benefit.

If you are one of the delegates who qualify for a rebate, just a quick FYI. If you haven't already submitted your convention registration form, make sure to check the box requesting the $100 rebate for Chapter Advisers or $200 for Collegiate Chapter Delegate or Alumnae Chapter Delegate.

On the form, there is a section titled "I AM ATTENDING CONVENTION 2008 AS: (CHECK ONE)" and a paragraph follows regarding what the fees include. There's a little box after that statement where you're supposed to check if "you want to receive an application for a rebate". It's not completely obvious and I almost missed it.

I just happened to read a reference to the rebate in the hard copy Call to Convention packet and it said to indicate a desire for a rebate on the form. I didn't recall seeing a rebate line on the form and I had to go back and look carefully for it. I almost sent the form without checking the box! If you've already submitted yours, you may want to go back and review the confirmation e-mail to be sure, lest there be some delay in getting your $100 or $200 back.

I hope this helps!

.....Kelly :)

This will be my 5th time too!:p I am super excited!:D

I am driving - and our alum chapter's alternate delegate is coming with also possibly the Emory Chapter Advisor and possibly also the Atlanta Alum Chapter President.

I am rooming with our alt delegate (Beta Epsilon and a retired military officer like me - but she's Army!) and my Beta Alpha sister (pledge class after mine) who I 've roomed with for the last two conventions.

Kelly - I hope we can get rooms near each other; remember Chicago convention when you got initiated, little sis?:) It was really neat wasn't it?I look forward to seeing you!

Y'all, I think we should set up a GC Gamma Phi get-together - perhaps at Hathaway's like Nutbrnhair suggested earlier??

pbear19 05-02-2008 07:02 PM

I would really love to meet some of you at convention, but I am only going to be there from Friday afternoon through Sunday. Even if you get together sometime earlier in the week, I'd still love to catch up with everyone if possible. :)
