Delaware Recruitment Thread!

Hi everyone! I’m so excited to finally be posting my own recruitment thread – I’ve been lurking on here forever. I’m a sophomore at the University of Delaware and I am SO EXCITED to be going through recruitment.

The 8 wonderful sororities here are:
Alpha Phi
Delta Gamma
Alpha Sigma Alpha
Chi Omega
Alpha Epsilon Phi
Kappa Alpha Theta
Sigma Kappa
Alpha Xi Delta

And my “codenames” are characters from Friends! Not in order, of course…
Ross
Rachel
Monica
Phoebe
Chandler
Joey
Gunther
Mike

Formal recruitment doesn’t start until the first weekend back from winter break, (middle of February for us - so far away!), but in the next two weeks we’re having open houses to get to know more about each sorority. These are basically the same as the first round of rush, from what I understand, except you don't have to sign up beforehand and there are no cuts. Also you can just come and go as you please. Anyone who thinks they may be interested in recruitment can go. You go in and are immediately paired with a few sisters, and then we switch off to get to meet as many girls as possible. The first round of formal recruitment also begins with open house, so it’s good preparation!

Not all of the sororities on campus have houses, so as to not give away which group is which, I just will not comment on the houses. Formal recruitment takes place in one building anyway; we don't visit the houses.
Being a sophomore, I've heard all the rumors and stereotypes about each house, but I'm trying to keep an open mind!
Going in, the houses I could see myself in are "Ross" & "Joey". I know some girls from each of these groups and they're people I click well with. The one group I really could not see myself in is "Gunther". A few girls from my floor last year joined this house and they were girls I would never consider hanging out with. Unfortunately I will not be able to attend Gunther's open house, so I will have to wait until formal to get a real picture of them. Of course, I realize that all of the girls I know may not represent their entire group and I'm sure my opinions will change.

I have visited one open house so far, but since there is a set schedule, I'm not going to comment on any of the groups until the end (November 14), as not to give away who I'm talking about. This was very long & probably for the most part unnecessary, but I'm just very very excited!

Is Alpha Delta Pi giving a presentation? Aren't they coming on in the spring?

BlueHens213 11-03-2007 08:40 PM

Yes I think they are, I read that here somewhere. But we (the students here that are getting emails about recruitment) have not been notified of anything as of yet.

texas*princess 11-03-2007 08:56 PM

I am not an ADPi official, but I *believe* they are going to participate in "Round 1" and then hold off until the end of formal recruitment.

nittanyalum 11-03-2007 09:00 PM

I'm excited because
#1 I was just thinking that things have gotten slower around GC since the excitement of the fall rushes ended so it's nice to know there's more around the corner after the holidays, and
#2 I am a HUGE friends fan and love that you're using the characters as code names! :)
Can't wait to hear the open house wrap up and follow you through your experience in February!

ETA: Cool points added for having Mike in there, he ended up being one of my favorite characters in the end (and I LOVE Paul Rudd IRL), so even though you haven't mentioned him as a favorite yet, the Mike house already has my vote! :)

isnt Phi Sigma Sigma at the University of Delaware too?

ajuhdg 11-03-2007 09:49 PM

OH YEAH! My little (she's 13) cousin just moved to Delaware, and I've been telling her since she was 5 that she couldn't go anywhere that didn't have a DG chapter! Good luck!

Phi Sigma Sigma closed in 2007.

honeychile 11-03-2007 10:16 PM

May you make a lot of new friends during Recruitment, BlueHens213!

Just think of the luxury you have - if you don't find the perfect "cast of characters" for you, you can consider the new colony. It's a win-win for you!

Jimmy Choo 11-04-2007 01:56 AM

OMG.... I don't think I've ever seen a thread from UD!! I grew up in Delaware and almost went to UD! :) Good luck bluehen and I can't wait to hear your story! :D

I couldn't find them on the UD Panhellenic website? Maybe they had a chapter there that closed recently?

I just googled UD's website and searched for the greek page and they were on there..time to update i guess

BlueHens213 11-04-2007 06:07 PM

Just to clear this up, Phi Sigma Sigma was most definitely closed last Spring Semester. For some reason they are not on the "Judicial" page, but I'm positive they closed. They had a house near me and their letters were removed :(
Anyway, here is the list of Fraternities & Sororities at UD, and as you can see, Phi Sig is not mentioned:
http://www.udel.edu/student-centers/...community.html

KSUViolet06 11-04-2007 06:26 PM

Best of luck to you, those are all great sororities and you even have the opportunity to check out a colony if you choose! Good luck!

BlueHens213 11-07-2007 07:08 PM

I'm now getting ready for more open houses tonight! I'm so nervous!! I'll let you all know how it goes when I get back!

BlueHens213 11-14-2007 10:33 PM

Well I'm finally done Open Houses!
I was unfortunately only able to attend 4 of the 8 houses, due to work and other commitments. I'm kind of bummed about that, but I did like what I saw!

Ok...the houses I went to were:
Ross
Chandler
Joey
Monica

Ross - As I said before, this was one of my favorites going in. However, I was a little disappointed by them. The girls I met were very nice, but I felt a little uncomfortable. A lot of the times the sisters were just talking to each other and I was just kind of standing by. However, I still liked who I met and am very anxious to see more during formal!

Chandler - I enjoyed my time with these girls, but it kind of seemed like all they talked about was frats! The girls were very nice and it was not awkward or uncomfortable, but I wanted to know more about their sisterhood. But again, I'm definitely not counting them out and am excited to see more of them during formal.

Joey - Before Open House, this is the chapter I could see myself most fitting in with. I must have good intuition because I LOVED these girls! This was the one house were I felt I made a good connection and "clicked" with at least 4 or 5 girls. I stayed here for a long time, and hated to leave! There was no awkwardness, and the conversation just naturally flowed. This was definitely my favorite house so far that I visited, but I don't want to get too "set" on one chapter before formal.

Monica - I really enjoyed my time with these girls. The conversation was comfortable, but one of the girls was talking about drinking which kind of turned me off, as that is most definitely what I'm not looking for out of a sorority. This wasn't my favorite, but I still really enjoyed this house and could probably see myself here.

I can't wait to see more of all of these chapters as well as Rachel, Phoebe, Gunther & Mike during formal! But we still have 3 loooooong months before rush. This has been 2 very hard semesters for me, and I cannot wait to find some girls with morals & values who will love me for me!

Sorry if this has been too long, but I needed somewhere to write out all my thoughts :)
I guess I'll talk to all you girls in February!

schnocks 11-14-2007 10:40 PM

ADPi is having an open house tomorrow evening from 5-7 in the Trabant University Center. A few of my chapter sisters are going ... I won't be able to go, but I'm hoping it all goes well! It'll be exciting to have a chapter so close to Villanova.

BlueHens213 11-14-2007 10:48 PM

Yes I got that email...I meant to put in the post that I hopefully will be able to attend that!

nittanyalum 11-15-2007 02:29 AM

Sounds like you had a good time, BlueHens, that's great! February seems SO far away, but I'll look forward to hearing updates again then. Still pullin' for Mike! :)

Benzgirl 11-15-2007 08:35 AM

Shame on Monica. We always stressed that you never spoke of the 3 Bs: Booze, Boys and Bars

violetpretty 11-16-2007 12:16 AM

I learned 6 Bs:

Booze/Bars- self-explanatory
Boys- self explanatory
Bitches- (i.e. no catty talk about other girls or other chapters)
Bibles- religion
Ballots- politics
Bank- (i.e.flaunting your money--bad--but be able to talk about dues if asked)

How are booze and bars different? We learned 4 B's- Booze, Boys, Bible, and Bank.

Benzgirl 11-16-2007 11:35 AM

Because in Ohio, you can't legally get into a bar until you are 21. Those who are under 21 still booze it in the dorm rooms and houses (illegally, of course)

SthrnZeta 11-16-2007 05:36 PM

It sucks she wasn't able to go to all of the open houses, and since we know when ADPi's open house was, she can't really talk about that one either. AND we have to wait until February??? I'm anxious to hear how the new colony will do - that's always so exciting! Good luck Blue!

I'm pretty sure you have to be 21 to enter a bar in all states. Clubs are 18 to party, 21 to drink.

texas*princess 11-16-2007 07:37 PM

Question about recruitments with one open house then the rest of the rounds later

...during the kind of recruitment that I'm most familiar with, actives were not allowed to talk to pnms during that week.

How does it work for the schools that have one 'open house' round, and the rest of the rounds a month or two or three down the road? Are they allowed to talk to pnms during that period between the open house round and the other rounds?

I'm just curious since I didn't go to a school that did it this way.

see i would think "bars" would insinuate more of "ixnay on talking about your party life, remember that whole greeks=party animal stereotype" vs "booze" insinuates more of... well, booze. lol

BlueHens213 11-17-2007 08:40 PM

I'm pretty sure we're still allowed to talk to the actives and stuff. This was very informal, so we weren't really informed of any "rules" or anything of that sort.

Very fun thread -- my best friend from high school went to UD - it's such a pretty campus. Sad to see the Stone Balloon is gone (was it still there when you were a freshman?)

True Delaware story: I had to call Encyclopedia Britannica to get something sent to Dover back in the day when FedEx didn't deliver everywhere.
Me: Hi, I need that sent FedEx to the Dover Mall
EB: I don't think FedEx ships to Dover.
Me: I'm sure they do - it's the state capital.
EB: State capitol? Of what state?
Me: Uh, Delaware.
EB: (indignant) And what state is Delaware in?
Bad enough from the general public, but scary from people at an encyclopedia company....

But enough with the Delaware stuff ---- good luck with recruitment, sounds like you're approaching it with a great attitude.

This is much like the multiple American companies who try to send things to my aunt by international shipping because she lives in New Mexico.

Late reply I know, but that's not completely true. I have a friend at U of Iowa who says 19 and up are allowed in to all of the bars in Iowa City (but of course you have to be 21 to drink). If someone knows better please correct me but that's what I've been told.

Everywhere is different. I've heard of clubs that are 25 and up due to catering to only "young profesionals". Some clubs have all ages nights but are 18 for girls 21 for guys on a normal night. Some are 21 and up period. Some are 18 and up for everyone. It really depends on the business and the state and local laws...

Late to this, but responding. Yes, there is a city ordinance in place in Iowa City that allows adults 19 and over into bars, regardless of time of day. 18 and under can be in until 10pm.

It is a highly debated topic in the area and a motion to move it to 21 was voted down earlier this year. It is ridiculously easy to get a drink in an Iowa City bar if you're under 21. Granted, if you get caught, you will pay the fines, and some debate that's why the ordinance has stayed in place - it's a moneymaker for the city.

AlphaFrog 12-10-2007 02:10 PM

The bars in my college town were 20+. Funny story, there was a bar called "The Pace" (actually it was Change of Pace, but I don't think anyone would have known what you were talking about if you said Change of Pace)...the bar was owned by the city Police officers. Easiest bar to get into with a fake (no personal experience, but I did see some pretty bad fakes other people had), and easiest bar to get a drink in underage, except for maybe the Two Dogs shot girls.

BlueHens213 02-03-2008 06:09 PM

Well, recruitment time is almost here!!
8 more days until we move back, 10 to orientation, 12 to recruitment and 22 until bid day! Okay, I sound crazy, but I'm really excited.

I hope everyone is not tired of recruitment stories yet :). I debated waiting until after recruitment was over to post, but there are so many girls that go through, I think it will still be very anonymous. Plus I don't intend to say anything nasty!

I just wanted to bump this thread, because it was already on the third page and I didn't want it to get too buried. Stay tuned!!

honeychile 02-10-2008 12:19 AM

Not long now!!!!

BlueHens213 02-13-2008 11:47 PM

I just had my recruitment orientation!!
Now I'm really excited :). I have 3 RC's who all seem really nice.

So Friday I'm visiting...
Phoebe
Chandler
Alpha Delta Pi (who is only participating in Open House Round)
Mike
Monica

and Saturday...
Joey
Rachel
Gunther
Ross

Saturday night we rank and Sunday all day we have Sisterhood, where we can attend a max of 6 parties. I'm done late Friday night, but early Saturday afternoon, so I'll probably update then :)

nittanyalum 02-14-2008 12:36 AM

Oo, I almost forgot about this one! I'm a total Friends-o-phile. Go Mike!!!!

AlphaXi4983 02-14-2008 08:19 AM

Good luck!!
