Simple questions about Greek Life that annoy you?

What are the most annoying questions about Greek life that you've received?

Include real life or on the internet, whichever moves you more.

fyrnymph 10-15-2007 04:44 PM

Not a question per se - but "Wow - you are in a sorority?", because apparently I don't fit their preconceived notions of what a sorority girl should be.

Senusret I 10-15-2007 04:45 PM

"Can you do a step right now?"

I almost misread your post -- but it leads into another one for me:

While I'm wearing Greek letters:

"Are you in a fraternity?"

OOhsoflyDELTA#9 10-15-2007 04:46 PM

what does A E O stand for???

Tom Earp 10-15-2007 04:59 PM

Isn't it a moot question?

People who have no clue, have not clue!

So when they look at you in what are you so talking about?

God, why do then not learn by looking?

You know what Tom.... this makes perfect sense.

No matter how much you explain, people will either be MORE confused or get disinterested.

Or just still don't get it -- case in point, there is a guy I know with no formal education who calls me an AKA every time I see him. :(

OOhsoflyDELTA#9 10-15-2007 05:03 PM

^^^^^^I'm glad it made sense to you cuz it made my head hurt....:(^^^

LOL.... and the last part of what he said about "learning by looking" -- sometimes it's more enriching to learn by observing on your own. Especially if it's a non-essential kind of question.

Benzgirl 10-15-2007 05:13 PM

"I never pictured YOU in a Sorority".
That is not a question, but that statement annoys me more than anything.

SthrnZeta 10-15-2007 05:25 PM

Delta#9, I found Tom's post hard to read too...

33girl 10-15-2007 05:29 PM

I remember one time on here a rushee (who had signed up with the name of the sorority she was hoping to join, another EEEEEEEK in itself) said "if I do all this will I get recruited?" Hence why I don't like the new terms - they sound really really stupid when you use them out of context. When you mix up "rush" and "bid" it just doesn't sound as lame somehow.

UGAalum94 10-15-2007 06:36 PM

It's not a question so much, but I get awfully tired of hearing adult people, the parents of kids who might rush, saying "I wasn't Greek: I never had to buy my friends."

At what stage of life would that really have passed for wit or insight, I'm not sure, but saying it when you are in your 40s just makes you seem extra-socially retarded or immature.

It just hints at that they are still on some level insecure and resentful about a decision made more than 20 years ago, and it's just such a stupid idea on the face of it. Is there a college anywhere where it's the Greek kids who particularly lack social skills or friends outside their GLOs?
It wasn't the way it was on any campus I've ever been to.

jubilance1922 10-15-2007 06:43 PM

"Can I hear your call?"

"Can you do a step?"

SnuKnight172 10-15-2007 06:43 PM

Common Question:
"You mean even though you graduated 3 years ago you still associate with your Fraternity? Don't you get kicked out when you graduate?"

My Response:
"You mean even though you turned 18 ten years ago you still associate with your family? Don't you get kicked out when you turn 18?"

Their response:
"That's different it's family."

My Response:
"So is my Fraternty!"

SigKapAngel767 10-15-2007 06:46 PM

SnuKnight...love the response! :)

SnuKnight172 10-15-2007 06:46 PM

A few more questions that I never dignify with an answer:

"So do you guys party alot?"

'What are some of your secrets?"

"Do you guys have a secret hand shake?"

"Did you have to eat weird things to get in?"

"So you are one of those people who had to buy friends during college?"

IDIOTS

MellySK 10-15-2007 06:56 PM

I get the "I can't believe YOu were in a sorority" comment a lot. It drives me nuts.

I also hate the "I didn't have to buy my friends" statement. I try explaining that dues were NOT buying your friends, blah blah blah - but it never works.

KSUViolet06 10-15-2007 07:06 PM

"OOh I wanna be in a sorority! Where do I sign up?"

It's not that simple hun.

SnuKnight172 10-15-2007 07:07 PM

When I get the "buying your friends" question my response if I like the person is:

Remember when you were a kid and your family had you in Sports, Dance, The Band, Day Care, etc... Or how about when you moved into the new neighborhood. Well guess what all of those things cost money as well. So every friend that you ever made were paid for in some form or another. The Sports line usually takes guys by surprise and i have actually used it on quite a few rush guests.

I like that! good point!

UGAalum94 10-15-2007 07:34 PM

In my most recent cases with the buying your friends, these are from the adult people who would have paid for all those teams and lessons.

It's just a pathetic thing to say, worse still to believe it.

aephi alum 10-15-2007 07:57 PM

There's been a chapter of AEPi at my school for quite a few years.

I joined a local sorority. During my sophomore year, we became a colony, and later a chapter, of AEPhi.

Two of the stupid questions I got when wearing letters were, "Oh, you're an AEPi little sister?" and "Oh, when did AEPi go coed?"

You would think that at an engineering school, people would be able to tell the difference between the letters pi and phi.

I just have to comment and say I love Firefly:D

KAPital PHINUst 10-15-2007 08:21 PM

Depends on which org I repped

APO: someone, usually an NPHC Greek looking at my letters. Invariably, they ask those two dreaded words:

"What's that?"

Me, being the smart-aleck that I was, usually reply in two simple words: "A fraternity". If I got probed for more details, I would say, www.apo.org. Check us out". My first 7-8 years I couldn't refer them to a website, because either it didn't exist, or the URL (at that time) was incredibly long and difficult to remember. My alternate answer was to inquring OSU students: Room 327 Ohio Union. Stop by and check us out.

I think after 80+ years of existing, some of the simplest things you can find out for yourself.

Kappa: Fortunately, I have not been asked one inane question--YET! :p

Except perhaps by NIC/IFC Greeks, when they see the letters, they ask, "Is that a new fraternity?", to which I reply, "Yup! 96 years new."

But as a Kappa, for the most part, I have been relatively question-free.

DZJess 10-15-2007 11:00 PM

I hate " so do you guys have to date someone in a fraternity"

or that stupid Easy DZ rhyme everyone and their momma seems to know and asks me about

Buttonz 10-15-2007 11:12 PM

What does EAT stand for?
Why do you wear EAT on your chest?

:rolleyes::rolleyes:

shadowyi 10-15-2007 11:46 PM

I just get the '...oh' when I say 'yes' to their 'are you in a sorority?' Gotta love it.

LatinaAlumna 10-16-2007 12:19 AM

Here are some of my "favorites":

1. "What is that? A-O-N?" (I actually had a guy in a Latino fraternity ask me this )

2. "What did they make you do to get in?"

3. "Ohhhh. You're one of those." (usually from a Latina/o who is not involved with greek life)

Word.

Even to exist in society, you have to pay money or some sort of fee. It's called taxes.

Hahaha. I would have said that too.

Ch2tf 10-16-2007 10:05 AM

Questions:
"What made you join that?" (Usually from another greek)

My response:
"What made you join that?"

Statements:
"I bet ya'll just bake cookies and what not."

My response:
"Yep, the cookies are damn good too!"

DSTCHAOS 10-16-2007 10:15 AM

I try to ban stupid questions from my memory bank--maybe I'll think of some later.

Some of the questions listed aren't stupid questions. They are naive and perhaps silly questions. The degree of stupidity for me usually depends on the age of the person and whether the person was REALLY serious about what they asked.

But I do believe in stupid questions just as I believe in the stupid people whose brains generate them.

DaemonSeid 10-16-2007 01:04 PM

How do you pledge?

What did you have to do?

How many times did you get hit?

Why didn't pledge something else?

How many girls did you get?

What should I do if I join XYZ frat and they hit me (how the f*ck should I know??????)

Who do you know that's famous?

Can you show me your handsign/grip?

ealymc 10-16-2007 01:51 PM

"How do I sign up for your frat?"
"Were you stripped down in front of everyone like in the movies?"
"How bad were you hazed?"
"What does 'E' N stand for?"
"Because your house is right next to Papa John's, do you get tired of pizza?"

knight_shadow 10-16-2007 02:00 PM

I usually get more annoyed by people who think they know about Greek life but really don't.

I've had several people ask me "What organization is that?" when I'm wearing letters. When I tell them "Omega Delta Phi," they'll yell out "Que dog! Woof Woof!" or something to that effect. When I try to correct them, they'll tell me I'm wrong

Thankfully, I've learned to deal with most of the questions/statements brought up above:
"Step for me!"
"What are your secrets??"
"How do I join ABC/XYZ Sorority?" (Why not ask them???)
etc, etc

BlueNYC2 10-16-2007 02:03 PM

what do you have to do to get into a fraternity? is it hard to become a member? I heard ya'll do alot of crazy stuff to get in, is it true?

This guy I went to school with asked me how to be a Kappa! I wasn't even an Alpha yet!

I guess APO really was like the Switzerland of Greek life at my school.

"What does all of that on your jacket mean?"
I usually reply to people I know "If I tell you I have to flogg you then burn you at the stake" if I dont know them, some standard answer "Everything has a special meaning and is not public information. I can't tell you."

I've had grown men, after learning Im in a sorority, tell me that they have always wanted to be a XYZ fraternity member and then proceed to do a really bad impression of said org's call. WTHayle?

I just remembered, I was wearing my Ninjapoodle jacket and a security guard @ my school told me he was a Mason then proceeded to step. Right there in the lobby of the building. I was like "ummm.. yeah dog. I gotta get to class. Later""
