Presidential candidates' Greek connections

It would be interesting to learn the Greek connections of all of the candidates running for U. S. president. Here is what I have uncovered thus far.

Democrats:

Joe Biden U. Delaware, fraternity? Wife Jill, college unknown

Hillary Clinton Radcliffe, no sororities Husband Bill, Georgetown, no fraternities (Alpha Phi Omega?) Daughter Chelsea, Stanford, did not join a sorority? Father, Delta Upsilon, Penn State

Christopher Dodd Providence College, no fraternities Wife Jackie, college unknown

John Edwards Clemson & North Carolina State, fraternity? Wife Elizabeth, Mary Washington & U. No. Carolina, sorority?

Barak Obama Occidental & Columbia, fraternity? Wife Michelle, Princeton, sorority?

Bill Richardson President of Delta Tau Delta, Tufts U. Wife Barbara, Wheaton, no sororities

Republicans:

Sam Brownback Kansas State, Alpha Gamma Rho Wife Mary, college unknown

Rudy Guiliana Manhattan Coll., officer of Phi Rho Pi (local fraternity still active today) Wife Judith, nursing school, no sororities Son at Duke, fraternity?

Mike Huckabee Ouachita Baptist U. (local fraternities exist) Wife Janet, Ouachita Baptist (local sororities)

Duncan Hunter college unknown Wife Lynne, college unknown

John McCain U. S. Naval Acad., no fraternities Wife Cindy, Univ. Southern California, sorority?

Ron Paul Gettysburg College, Lambda Chi Alpha Wife Carol, Gettysburg, sorority?

Mitt Romney Stanford (fraternity?) & BYU Wife Ann, BYU, no sororities

Tom Tancredo Northern Colorado, fraternity? Wife Jackie, college unknown

Fred Thompson North Alabama & Memphis U, fraternity? Wife Jeri, DePauw, sorority?

Several have children who could be member of fraternities & sororities.

NutBrnHair 10-10-2007 02:22 PM

Mitt Romney's mother is/was a Chi Omega from Xi Alpha Chapter, University of Utah.

Fawn Liebowitz 10-10-2007 02:37 PM

I just read an article on Jeri Thompson - she was a Pi Beta Phi at DePauw

tekeboy 10-10-2007 06:35 PM

Frater Huckabee

Mike Huckabee was recently initiated into the Bond of Tau Kappa Epsilon, following his undergraduate son, I'm not certain of the college. I believe there was a recent article in The Teke magazine.

Sister Havana 10-10-2007 07:01 PM

Hillary Clinton is an honorary member of the Alpha Beta Chi chapter of Alpha Phi Omega. Bill Clinton is an alum of the Mu Alpha chapter of APO. :D

OhSoVeryLadylike 10-10-2007 09:28 PM

Bill Clinton is also Kappa Kappa Psi Fraternity for Bandsmen

Huckabee was initiated through the Beta Psi chapter at Arkansas State University in Jonesboro either in Dec. '06 or this spring '07. The chapter closed at the end of the '06/'07 school year due to numbers. His son, David, is a TKE initiated at ASU.

LPIDelta 10-11-2007 09:37 AM

Among John McCain's children there is no Greek connection.

Fawn Liebowitz 10-11-2007 10:06 AM

Cate Edwards (John and Elizabeth Edwards' daughter) is a Pi Phi, too.

Low C Sharp 10-11-2007 10:19 AM

Hillary went to Wellesley, not Radcliffe. There are sorority-like local groups there, but I'm pretty sure we'd have heard about if she'd been a member.

John Edwards' daughter Cate was a Pi Phi at Princeton and is now at Harvard Law. I don't know which eating club she was in.

Presidential candidate Ron Paul, Lambda Chi and libertarian, is on CNN right now.

I disagree -its always nice to know who is who in Greekdom, especially when it comes to who might be running the United States next!!! I think that its a great topic for a thread.

Currently in the Bush White House, both Laura Bush, the First Lady and Lynn Cheney, the wife of VP Dick Cheney are Kappa Alpha Thetas. Barbara Bush was an alumnae initiate of Pi Beta Phi. :)

SWTXBelle 10-15-2007 08:32 AM

I second the "check out Ron Paul" sentiment.

There may be a candidate that actually makes sense, but I haven't seen anything to make me think it's this one.

Many if not most of the "controversial" things he advocates (abolishing various federal agencies, return to the gold standard, etc.) deal with things that fall under the aegis of Congress, not the President, so unless he can get a majority of Representatives and Senators to agree with him, something he hasn't achieved while in Congress, he'd be quite ineffective as President.

Taualumna 10-15-2007 10:07 AM

fyrnymph 10-15-2007 10:13 AM

I'd take an "ineffective" one over one who tries (successfully, alas) to extend the powers of the executive branch, Constitution be damned. I see one of the biggest problems in politics today as being the near-worship of the staus quo. The "things may be bad, but there is nothing we can do.That is the way things are" mentality means we get candidates who are afraid to be leaders, or advance radical ideas. I'm ready for someone to shake things up - if nothing else, maybe it will get other politicans to think - hey, I can dream - and start a real discussion about issues, as opposed to feeding the masses what the focus groups say they want to hear.

I wouldn't necessarily argue with that, although I think that much of what Paul wants to do based on his "constitutionalism" is not actually grounded in the Constitution.

But this is a discussion that belongs in News and Politics, not in a Greek Life thread about candidate's Greek connections.

KyleMcGuire1983 10-16-2007 04:31 AM

I meant it was weak in that it sucks there aren't more greek candidates!

PKPILZ003 01-14-2008 07:23 PM

If Bloomberg gets in, we'll have a Phi Kappa Psi as well.

Thetagirl218 01-17-2008 01:09 AM

I keep thinking Cindy McCain is in a sorority for some reason? I know it isn't Theta. Alpha Chi Omega maybe?

You were right the first time, she's a Theta from USC (Southern Cal).

violetpretty 01-17-2008 01:34 AM

What is it with Republicans and Theta?

Ok, I feel slightly stupid I don't know the alum from my GLO! I had a gut feeling she was one, but when I went to double check she wasn't list on our notable Thetas list!

I have no idea what is up with the recent trend. I did want to add though that both of the Bush Twins, Barbara and Jenna were Thetas at UT-Austin and Yale.

SWTXBelle 01-17-2008 10:53 AM

Weren't they UT - Austin and Yale?

Is Beta Sigma Phi a service sorority? I am sorry, I am not that familiar with it.

It's a non-academic social and service sorority. And it's huge. You can read more about it here and here.

CONFIRMED!!!!! :D:D:D:D

That's the best news I've heard all day.

jmagnus 01-18-2008 12:57 PM

As much as I thought I would never vote Republican, I'm really liking Huckabee. And not just because he's a Teke...because he did a commercial with Chuck Norris!:D

lol...that chuck norris shit was funny...

BrainsnBeauty 01-18-2008 04:50 PM

No problem Thetagirl! I love when people ask about my beloved sorority. NittanyAlum is right. We are an international non-collegiate social/service sorority. And we are VERY big!! Yay! :-) There are several first ladies that are honorary Beta Sigma Phi's.

Tom Earp 01-18-2008 06:01 PM

Well, it seems that none of the candidates art true Social Greek Members!

That seems scary to me as they were never trained in how to do anything!:p

I'm not sure about that. :) Pat Buchanan and Donald Rumsfeld's wives are Theta's as well as the co-founder of the Iowa Women's Caucus/1st female to chair the Republican National Committee (Mary Louise Epperson Smith).I could name several others who are Republican as well. U.S. Senator Claire McCaskill is a democrat however.

While the "famous" alums may seemingly be skewed in one direction politically, the membership as a whole is more than likely split evenly (atleast it was in my chapter).
