You're better off going through fraternity rush at UCLA and letting each fraternity give you their spiel.
There is a lot more to fraternities than good parties. If you are interested in making some great friends and involving yourself in community projects, meeting new people on campus, AND those parties, then you should look into all of the fraternities during rush and accept an invitation to the one where you feel like you fit in the best. Otherwise, you may end up joining a group and paying dues where they may have the best parties, but you don't like the members... and the parties are a very small part of a brotherhood. Hope this helps! Students in your UCLA classes might have perceptions of the different fraternities to share-- but everyone has a different opinion about who is the best and why. You are better off going through rush and making that decision for yourself once you have all of the information from the fraternities and have gotten a vibe for the members in each one. |

I've never heard "frat" used as a bad thing to call a fraternity. Can someone PM me the reason it would be considered bad?

There's an educated, well-thought out response somewhere in the middle. By the way, there are tons of threads about the use of the word "frat". This thread's just one POV of many. |

The explanation I received in college was: you wouldn't call your country a c**t so you shouldn't call your fraternity a frat. :D
|
I'm not going to deny fraternity members who wish others to not use "frat," but I have always thought that analogy to be ridiculous. The c-word is a dirty word in common vernacular, whereas frat does not carry the same connotation.
Regardless, I will never refer to a fraternity as a frat, but it is out of respect to those men who have expressed such. Other fraternity men don't care and call it a frat, frat brothers, etc. I think it depends on where you are from. |
Didn't we just have this same discussion last week?

I don't use the word "frat." Nor do I use "frat brother." Some do, and that's OK, but personally I think it sounds demeaning. As for the "c" word analogy -- it's silly. |
That topic again? Really?

And the "would you call your country . . . " comparison is still just as lame as it was last week, and last month, and last year, and the year before that . . . . |
