My IU recruitment story...07/08!

.

REE1993 10-05-2007 05:48 PM

Why are there 2 months between the first 2 rounds?

Also, I thought I heard that *someone* is recolonizing....will that be part of formal recruitment or will they likely COB?

YAY! An IU story! :D

IIRC I think the wait is for grades to come in, since you have to have a certain GPA to pledge.

sarasmile 10-06-2007 10:33 AM

Yay! An IU recruitment story. I don't think I've seen one of these yet.

There are several schools who have spring/winter recruitment who have "fall parties" or "fall previews" as their open houses - you have to remember that spring/winter recrutiment requires girls to come back from the holiday break about a week early which can be a big deterrent for some. I think having the first rounds in the fall gets PNMs excited about Greek life and gives them a reason to WANT to come back from the break early.

But yes, it is a tease - especially because you'll have 2 months of seeing all of the members around campus in their letters and desperately waiting for January!

Low C Sharp 10-06-2007 01:33 PM

When do you find out what your 12-party invites were? Only after coming back to campus in January?

Ohio State has open houses in the fall, then formal in the winter. Although, you visit each house (14) when formal begins in January

I think I know who is recolonizing...since there is only one house who used to be here and isn't anymore (their house is now the office of admissions...). Can you PM me who it is?

Geez.... sorry! I misinterpreted IU. Forgive me as I haven't been to any state beginning with an "I". :o

that is ok. IU = Indiana University UI= University of Illinois UofI= University of Iowa (or at least that is how I was taught it after living in each state). Of course I went to Indiana University as well! (The 'rents live in B'ton)

VAgirl18 10-11-2007 03:53 PM

Kinda late on this, but IU has deferred rush not only because of the grades, but because they want the women to get a full semester's worth of experience without the greek system.

my friend's younger sister is going through recruitment at IU also!! she's really looking forward to this weekend.

How the frick to do you even remember who you met (on the recruitment side) with parties that large..? (approx 85 women a party!) And then REMEMBER them after the holiday break with recruitment starts in earnest!

Oh...I am so in awe of recruitments that large!

We had 1200 in 18 parties, and yes, it was tough. What was worse...Round 1 was only 15 minutes!

HoosierGirl89 10-26-2007 11:52 PM

recruitment begins in less than 12 hours!!!!!

You were rushed by a girl who doesn't even go to IU? I'm sorry, is it me or does that seem a bit on the not right side?

Possibly a rebuilding chapter that called in help from alumnae or other chapters...

HoosierGirl, it sounds like you had a great day! So glad you're having fun and can't wait to hear the next installment! :)

You're welcome, and frankly, it's a good thing I didn't notice your user name before or "location" -- JUST finished watching the game. OUCH.:( :o

Sounds like you had a great day. The fact that there were so many that you said you wanted to go back to is good. Not everyone is as open-minded as you are being.

Indiana does round 1 in October and finishes the rest after winter break. Kind of silly, kind of sensible. This allows them to eliminate grade risks, since they'll have a GPA in January. It also eliminates the most tedious part of recruitment when the PNMs get back (Does IU come back from winter break early for recruitment? If so, it reduces the amount of time that PNMs have to come back early.). However, this eliminates any transfer freshmen and last minute-women from going through, it's pure torture to wait 3 months to see where you are invited back and it opens wide the door for dirty rushing (more so than most deferred recruitment campuses) since PNMs and members have officially met.

Indiana has a timeline for Recruitment that is a little different than other campuses.

PNMs visit all 19 houses in the fall. The next round of visits is in January and are all by invitation.

This is a calendar from the Panhellenic website, probably a little outdated but helpful for us to visualize what's going on.

December 2nd - 3rd 19 Party
January 4th First Invite
January 5th Second Invite
January 6th Preference Round
January 7th Bid Day

Panhellenic

Ahh, thanks so much for the info, VP. I see what you're saying about how it makes sense on one hand, but oh, the torture for the PNMs! And I wonder if it's tough on the chapters to have a break in "momentum" like that, although, looking at the "other hand" again, you can see them coming back from holiday break all charged up and ready to rush (versus now in the middle of the semester when they have mid-terms, etc.).

And the worst part is, it keeps us hanging here on GC. Doesn't the office of greek life at IU realize there are people out here waiting to find out whether she got invited back to her top 12 or not?? So inconsiderate. ;)

Thanks for the even more detailed info. So is the "3rd 19 Party" like the end of her open house visits that the OP was describing? And wow, they still do 4 full rounds when they get back! I was assuming they'd start right with second sets or something. That is a LOT of rushing!!!

I think we had two or three from Washington this fall. I can't remember if it was the same thread, but it made for good reading.

Good Luck ladies. The suspense is already killing me.

AZ-AlphaXi 10-29-2007 06:30 PM

And several years ago there were two PNMs from Arizona who had separate threads but consulted together and used the same code names. That was really fun reading their different impressions of the groups.
