Christina Aguliera: like her? hate her?

I have surmised, from listening to the young ladies who babysit my daughters, that Christina Aguliera seems to be almost universally disliked among teenage/early twentysomething girls.

She seems very attractive and talented to me, but I just might be prejudiced because she went to the high school a few towns over from mine (many, many years later, of course!)

I was just curious as to what you all think about her.

Well, she's no Britney http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

I like some of her music, but I think she's waaaaaaaay too skinny and she needs to get a new stylist. Her clothes are just getting too freaky. I mean, the pink hair was one thing, but now the giant puffball hair and bad makeup...its just ugly. She's totally undermining her natural beauty.

Her singing is much much more natural talent than my girl Britney, but she overdoes it sometimes with the improv-sounding stuff.

I guess if she toned it all down some, she'd have a wider appeal

I think Tammy Faye Baker gave her tips on makeup.

AMEN to that. But who gave her tips on hair?

sigmagrrl 05-25-2001 11:24 AM

I actually respect her b/c she can sing. I don't like how she uses that finger waving and hand shaking to accent her singing though....

SH80 05-25-2001 11:27 AM

Can't stand her!!!

hey KillarneyRose , what town?
Oh but I dislike her as well, I give her credit cause she can sing a bit , a lot better then Brittney, cause she can't sing at all http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif I think cause she has a lot of competition that she trys to hard to be liked.

Did anyone see that interview on MTV where she said she's really into body piercing. She said something to the effect of - I'm rocking about twelve right now *wink* but they're all hidden. Kinda changed my entire perspective on her. I think she's a little skanky.

Salience 05-25-2001 02:35 PM

Now that girl can SING!!

Stank dresser with some serious hair and makeup issues, but I choose her over Britney's no-talented behind every time.

Whoa, I didn't see that interview. I don't think there's anything wrong with piercings in general (I myself have my navel and my ears pierced-- 3 in one ear, 2 in the other) but when you have 12 that can't been seen, that's a little scary! I don't even want to know where they are!

Hi DGPhoney! Christina Aguliera is from Wexford, PA which is a suburb of Pittsburgh. My high school and hers were big football rivals (waaaaaaay back when I was there, anyway!)

I believe that in that interview she said did say she had 12 piercings but she didn't say they were ALL hidden. She has her nose and nose pierced as well as a few ear piercings so I'm sure it's not all that bad.

Anyway, she does have tons of vocal talent but her personal image/style pretty wacky.

GeoffZ 05-25-2001 10:04 PM

My opinion on Christina is kinda split. I think she is a pretty girl with an incredible voice. But, I also think she over-sings too much (which can be annoying)and she has alot of clothes/hair/makeup issues. It seems like she is trying too hard to be bigger and better than Britney.

SSS1365 05-26-2001 12:00 AM

She's okay, I mean the way she looks is a little scary sometimes, and I would never buy her CDs, but she does have excellent vocal talent.

TOTALLY Agree w/ya Juniorgrrl! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Britney in my opinion, is way better. C.A. just annoys the crap out of me...how she tries to copy Mariah Carey's singing style, the finger waving, the clothes, the makeup http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif, and just how I don't think she gives a positive image to all those 10-year olds to 13-year olds who idolize her. Not that Britney is the best role model either...but at least Britney HAS A PERSONALITY!!!! Saw C.A. on Rosie--wearing something very flimsy and sounded like a ditz, IMO...harsh I know.

Sorry bout that..but whenever I see her on TV or something...I think "AHH!" She used to be cool when her first single came out...but then after that, I just feel that she has tried too hard to be the best, over Britney.

For all the Christina haters, you'll be happy (not!) to know that she has put her name on the Fetish makeup line and it's at your local Sears. I can take Christina and Britney the same way I can take boy bands - dance songs only, don't get all ballady-deep on me.

But my big question is: what the heck is with Mandy Moore and Jessica Simpson? They are the same person, aren't they? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif

It's easy to get Mandy and Jessica confused. Their success (if any) seems to be riding on other things besides music. Mandy--her stint as an MTV VJ...and Jessica--her no-sex relationship with 98 Degrees' Nick Lachey. Although I think Jessica can sing, something's just not going right for her.

I enjoyed Christina when she first did her Mulan thing. I remember all the tots from the New Mickey Mouse Club and I was amazed to see how fast they had matured since the cancellation of the show.

I think Britney's beautiful...and sometimes I think Britney uses her looks to get by. I really can't stand her songs anymore. Especially after she butchered Shania's "Don't Let Me Be The Last To Know."

Christina's beautiful too...but I don't know why she has to hide it with her hair and gallons of makeup.

Sometimes I really miss Paula Abdul, NKOTB, the Jets, and the rest of the old school. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

I like Britney better than Christina. C.A. freaks me out with all the makeup. Even at her most natural she has on a whole stick of black eye liner. She is really waifish, and the bleach colored hair is just not cute. Other than that, I think she's ok

I like Christina's ability to really sing and convey meaning through her pitch and voice. HOWEVER, I think that is ALL she has going for her. I think she is trying to hard to look like an adult when she's barely there.

Anyway - Here's my tip to you Christina...
A long time ago I was told that boys like it better when girls don't wear so much makeup. They said they can tell the teenie boppers from the college girls because us college girls...au natural our looks.
So if you want to start acting your age...lighten up on the makeup. Soon enough you'll look like KISS...and when I was little they scared the CRAP outta me.

LOL! I think it was Conan that said Christina is actually the long lost daughter of one of the guys from Twisted Sister! Scary thing was, it *did* look a bit like her current look... http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

LOL. I didn't think of that one...that makes sence too.

nucutiepie 05-29-2001 04:57 PM

I think that Christina has an AMAZING voice, but unless she has really good training she will blow it out in a matter of years (according to my sis who is studying to be a singer) her sense of style? trashy as anything.

Personally, I prefer Britney, and Jessica Simpson does have a good voice

ZChi4Life 05-30-2001 12:01 AM

I guess I rarely take into consideration a performer's "look" b/c it's all for show and stage. I totally doubt Christina chills around the house in all that make-up and hair (or at least I HOPE she doesn't! lol http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/tongue.gif). Anyway, I think Christina is WAY better than Britney. Britney=lip sync. Can she just get up there and be a singer and stop trying to be a dancer? Now Christina, she's got a voice and will get up on any stage and belt it out! Sure she dresses sleazy and could tone down the makeup and puffy hair, but to me, she's got the best voice out there of any teen pop star, besides Aaliyah (my other fav female singer).

I am not a fan of either Britney or C.A. because they know that all these 10-12 year old girls look up to them and they are not great role-models. Anyway, i heard somewhere that C.A. got a nose job. I am sorry if this is old info but is it really true?

I was just listening to Mariah Carey's second album yesterday, and remembering all the "vocal gymnastics" she used to do. Some of it, honestly, is just screaming. I think once she established she could do that she settled down considerably - I can't remember the last time she did one of those "here's my 8 octave range" songs. I think Christina is kind of doing the same thing - just doing it to show she can (and Britney can't).

nucutiepie 05-30-2001 02:09 PM

I heard Mariah Carey blew her voice out - not entirely, but she lost a lot of her range. The human voice isn't meant to make noises like that - and if someone can, they usually can't for long...your vocal cords just arent meant to do that. Watch and listen, the same will probably happen to Christina.

SigTauJake 05-30-2001 03:21 PM

Being that Christina is from Pittsburgh, I used to feel loyalty to her, since I am from right up the road. She definitely can outsing Britney anyway, but she looks like Marilyn Manson in the Moulon Rouge video. Britney is much better looking, and not as nearly trashy. There is not a Brother's room in the house that does not have a Britney poster in it, so Britney wins, but CA can still sing.

WELL! Britney (fellow Louisianian) IS NOT Christina!

After Britney's "appeal" dies, Christina will CONTINUE to bring the house down with her VOCAL RANGE AND VOCAL ABILITIES. Britney is "banking" in on her looks, another Debbie Gibson in the making!

Christina is on an entirely different level than Britney. After N'SYNC, BSB, and those other kiddie groups have faded away, along with Brit, Christina will still be there.

Christina's "audience" really isn't that bubble-gum, teeny bopper group. Those teeny boppers grow up and their taste change. That's what Britney and those groups mentioned previously are gonna have to recognize. Yet, they will ride the wave until it ends. But, Christina will be there. LONGEVITY is the key, and I think Christina will have it. Still making music appealing to an older audience.

ZTAngel 05-30-2001 10:31 PM

I sang with many vocal coaches for years. Some of those notes that Mariah Carey and Christina Aguilera belt out are virtually impossible for most people. Unfortunately, it's damaging. It sounds good now but I guarantee that 2 years from now, Christina won't be able to sing like that. i've noticed that Mariah doesn't attempt to hit those high notes in her songs anymore....maybe something happened.
Christina tends to oversing. In the Mulan Rouge song, she overpowers everyone. She has a good voice but it would be nice to hear the others.
I do like her better than Britney, though. The problem that I have with Britney is that she does know how to sing, she just chooses not to. If anyone has ever seen some of earlier stuff that she did as a kid on Star Search...the girl can sing. She's been trained since she was little to NOT sing through the nose. But, since sounding nasaly is making her money, she'll keep on doing it.

Actually, Britney's heading more for a Tiffany-like career. Debbie, now Deborah Gibson, has had lots of success as a Broadway actress. She was in Beauty and the Beast, Les Misarables, and I think a few other shows. She gave up being a teen singer because the pressure was too much for her.

I dont respect either of them. I dont think either of the two are very good role models and try a little too hard to brown nose to the public. Common Sense is what I think they both lack sometimes. Like when they choose to go overboard on the make up or decide to potray themselves in a more than PG-13 manner. Of course I am 29. *L*
