Pets!

(drought at work again so I'm posting new topics http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif)

I LOVE ANIMALS!! So I wanna hear about all your pets -- names, funny things they do, etc.

Some of favorite names that I've given my pets:

Edgar-Fat-N-Belly
Purrfection
Algernon
Jinx - black cat that crossed my path

My fav pet story of all time:

Poochie was a dog we had rescued from an abusive home. Before we could get her spayed, she got out and got pregnant. Well after we gave her puppies away, we found this little black cat who was the runt of the litter and its mother had tried to kill it (you know - stronger species survives) so we rescued him. Poor thing weighed all of a couple ounces and his head was twice as big as his body from where she had tried to suffocate him. Well after a day, the cat disappeared, and we thought it had died outside -- then we noticed Poochie wouldn't come inside except to eat and then she'd go right back out....2 weeks later, Poochie comes up to the front door with this huge cat by her side -- she had nursed Algernon back to health!! Is that not the sweetest thing? Algernon is slightly mentally retarded (no joke) and he only has a few teeth from where the others never developed properly, but he is the sweetest most loving cat. When Poochie died, he would just lay on her grave and meow to beat the band. He knew that's where she was because we had put her toys on top and Algernon could smell them. When we adopted a new puppy from the shelter, she was a runt too -- well what do you know, Algernon took right to her and would cuddle with her at night so she wouldn't be lonely, and to this day they are best of friends!

We had a dog named Lady who died. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif She was a very cute cocker spaniel, and the runt of litter. I had to beg my parents for at least a year-seems way longer-before they would get me a puppy. She followed me everywhere and was my best friend, since we just settled down after moving around a lot. Anyway, she was best friends with a cat we adopted later named Tiger. When she died, Tiger went to look for her. He never came back. Then, like a year or two or three later we got two new little kittens. The people that gave them to us said one was a boy and one was a girl. Well, Buster let us check things out to make sure. But the other one wouldn't hold still so we named him Clara. Good thing he is nuetered cuz he fights dogs and stuff in the neighborhood, and think he even killed a possum. Who knows would happen if he had extra testosturone. Anyway, Buster got into a fight, but is not as good as a fighter and lost a tooth.

My dog's name is Harley and we've been friends for over 8 years!
He's my shadow when I come home, and we go camping and hiking together.

He's a mutt... black and tan, part shepard, part something else.. he winks at people and has a cockeyed smile http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Faced with the Divine, I was asked; "What one gift do you seek?"
I answered ever so meekly; "I seek Honor, Truth, Integrity, and Wisdom, yet those are four. How am I to choose?"
The answer came as a pounding whisper; "The four you seek are but one. I grant thee Compassion; for without it the four make none."

I never had any pets growing up. However, my parents kept bees...does that count? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Great topic, AXO Alum! I love animals sooo much!

I have always loved cats the most and have had a lot of them. Currently, my mom still has a couple of cats I grew up with. Zaphod and Trillian are named after characters in the book "Hitchikers Guide to the Galaxy" They are such cuties. Zaphod is a real scaredy cat and hides whenever people come over, but when he comes out, I am so happy because he is like a big teddy bear...very fat! We can't stop him from eating, and the other cat is super skinny...she doesn't like to eat.

That reminds me of a funny story my roomate had about her cats fat problem. She had one that wa sfat, and a couple normal ones, but the fat one kept eating the other's food. So, they put the food up on the counter and he was too fat to jump up, so he started losing weight and the other cats got to eat! But, then he lost enough weight to jump up on the counter and, you guessed it, got fat again! so, they have this never-ending cycle of him being too fat to jump up, losing weight, jumping up, eating and getting fat again! What a neurotic cat!

I also love dogs of all sizes and shapes. I had a POmeranian, but he got dog-napped, surely because he was so cute. No matter what, his little face looked like he was smiling.

I desperately want a pet, but we are not supposed ot have dogs at the house we are renting. And my boyfriend is deathly allergic to cats. he hates them because he's never been able to interact with them without getting a severe reaction. I have tried to ask him to go to his doctor and at least find out some information about all the new treatments they have, like getting shots every month for a year or two and being cured! But, he keeps putting it off and it makes me sad. Anyone have any suggestions?

bucutie02 02-14-2001 04:57 PM

My dog is named Mickey-Boy, mickey for short. He is the cutest dog in the world, and he would never hurt a flea. He barks when the doorbell rings, but thats as far as it goes. When he runs out of water or food, he will come right up to you and just stare and stare at you. Thats when you know he needs something. Sometimes when you talk to him he will move his mouth like he is actually talking to you.
His front teeth are crooked, but thats just one thing that makes him unique and cute. He has a lot of hair so every so often he goes to PetCo and gets groomed. When he comes back he looks like a little teddy bear.
When you mention the word "treat" he knows exactly what you mean, and will start jumping up and down.
Mickey isnt very big at all, he comes like maybe a couple of inches above my ankle. He will be 13 years old this march.

We have had other pets before as well, but about maybe a couple of years ago, we had an australian shepard. His name was Dandy, and was just gorgeous. Blue eyes, and he was like a white, brownish color. The sweetest dog ever, well to my family that is. He was very protective, and once bit this little girl on our street. We gave him away to a man that lived on a ranch. We figured he would be better off there http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

I just had to post, also, about my boyfriend's parents dog. he is so funny! He's a beautiful golden retriever and if you say "Ball" in his hearing, you better watch out. The dog can play fetch forever. We don't even throw him the ball after a while, because it is so slimy with his slobber. We have to kick it. Every time you throw that ball, he goes at it, full force! Even if the ball only went about 10 feet, he runs it into the ground and speeds back to you. Now, we always have to have a plan in place to escape, or we would literally be there playing fetch for hours. either you rotate people (when one person gets tired, the next rotates in) or, you throw the ball really far and then run into the house while he is running away. otherwise, you will get the sad dog face if you don't play with him anymore. He is so hard core about playing fetch that I think if we didn't stop, he might just collapse from exhaustion. Also, he has chased balls so hard and fast, or caught them in mid-air, that he causes his mouth to bleed. We have to be careful to only use soft tennis balls and keep an eye on his mouth cuz, of course, he doesn't care if he's bleeding, he just wants to play ball!

Our landlady let us have our ferret in our rented apartment -- here is my spiel on ferrets -- they are very smart, potty trainable (very easily), and a ton of fun!! Cons - they have 2 speeds -- wide open and asleep, but usually wide open. Some smell - ours does not. They like to be in groups -- I ended up with an anti-social ferret so he's solo but this is unusual. You also have to ferret proof your house (they don't call it "ferreting out" for nothing).

They are really great pets though - we couldn't love our Hobbes more if we tried. Check out this site: http://www.ferretcentral.org for more info.

Email me if you want to, also - I just cannot imagine my life without Hobbes -- but ferrets do require a bunch of love and attention so be prepared.

My darling animals.... I miss my babies! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif But anyway - There is the senior cat Oliver. He's about 10 yrs. old and rules the roost. He's had ear mite infections in the past, so his ears are funny looking, but it just gives him more personality. Then there is Tiggy - 23 lbs of Tiggy. He's huge. Then there's Gwen - think Nermal from Garfield. And the youngest of the cats is my baby, Malcolm (aka Melly). He's the sweetest fluffiest, darlingest cat and I miss him more that my family. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif We also have a Guinea Pig named Pandora, two orphaned flying squirrels named Tiki and Tavi, and one very large goldfish named Cloe. We are the people that neighbors bring orphaned animals to. We all know the number to just about every specialized animal rehab center in the area. The only reason we still have the squirells is that they were blown out of a tree during a hurricane and we couldn't get to the animal rehab place before we fell in love with them. I love my beasties!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Oh, I also have two robotic animals, but they aren't quite the same thing.

Names of pets I've had in the past

Heidi (yorkshire terrier)
Cuby (yorshire terrier)
We had them in okinawa until I reached h.s. So close to 20 years. Heidi actually died earlier than Cuby because she ran out in the road when I was in 7th grade and she got hit by a car.
Whiskey, Siberian Huskey. Awesome Dog. He scared the life out our whole back yard when I was in Junior High.

Teddy, my current dog and my parents dog. a 1 year old Jack Russell Terrier. He likes to chew on things and we have to watch him because one time he snatched money out of my moms purse. No joke. It all worked out and my parents pieced it together. Hes such a loving dog. We have a invisible fence which helps out a lot.
My Mom and Sister in Law have 10 cats combined. Our biggest cat must be like 20 or 30 pounds. Her name is Cuddles. Other of our cats names, Mo, Minnie, Twinky, Bandit, Tiny, one I named tater-tot, but I call her tater and my sister in law calls her tot. Missy, and Baby are the others.

I prefer dogs by the way. I'm not crazy about cats, especially the hair but I deal with it.

My sister has a black cat named Pandora.

Anyway, I am such a dog person. But since I can barely take care of myself, I cant handle a dog yet. I did have a sheltie growing up for 18 years that died when I was a senior in HS. Anyway she would really look out for me whan I was really little. I'd be playing in the front yard and If I would get too cloose to the street she'd herd me back towards the house. (they are natural herders) But it makes me wonder where my mother was... Anyway, we then got a schnauzer named Alex after this weatherman who was always drunk on TV - cause the dog seemed drunk when it was a puppy.

i also had a friend in college who was from china and she had the most adorable sheltie named rusty. I would always take care of Rusty on Holidays. When she graduated, she had trouble getting her immigration status updated to worker and she almost got deported. I was to get the dog if she had to leave the country, and I must admit that a small part of me SO wanted her to get deported so I could keep rusty. But she didn't, so I am still dogless.

I have two dogs and I love them both. The old one (approximately 14yrs old) is a peakapoodle (MUT) with missing teeth and BAD STINKY BREATH! When I was little my mom let me name him, and since I was into the Muppet Babies I names him Fozzy Bear. The other is our pure-bread yellow lab. He's a beast but the kindest, most gentle and quiet dog. His name is Yogi Bear, and was chosen by my father. We have nick names for both. For Fozzie I usually say Foz. Yogi has more fun nicknames like Fat-Head *LOL* because he's so big. Or we'll call him Yellow Horse because he runs like a horse all throughout our large backyard.
Probably the funniest story about Yogi is what happened to him when he was a pup. My dad was outside mowing the backyard that spring and Yogi was on our deck (which is very, very far off the ground). My dad saw him peaking over the side and so he called to him; thinking he'd use the stairs to get down. OH NO! Instead the dog JUMPS off the deck. He was so lucky he landed in the bushes below and didn't kill himself! I guess that's really not funny but we just thought he was it was so hilarious that he was so stupid/brave. We love him though! <3
I've always wanted a cat but I'm allergic.

Shasta is our baby- she is a chow and is very into being clean. After I take a shower I will put the towel on the floor and she rubs her whole body into it to get herself clean too I guess?! Even if I hang the towel on the rack- she'll grab it with her teeth, pull it down, and rub her face in it. She is too funny!

MIDWESTDIVA 02-15-2001 09:37 PM

My baby's name is Ling Ling. She is a fawn colored pekingese and she will be 2 years old tomorrow!!! I'm going to buy my baby some gifts! She's high maintenance, but that's okay. I am too. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Okay, so I was trying to break my Greekchat addiction and not post but I just had to jump in and tell about my cat...

I've had Whiskey since last April when I found her at an ATM machine. She lived at home with me last summer and if my mom or I went out walking in the woods behind our house, she would always tag along. I seriously must have walked 3 miles one day, over creeks and everything and Whiskey followed me the whole time. She would also jump from our back porch onto the roof and then climb over the roof and into my brother's 3rd floor window. Now, in my apartment, she still occasionally manages to get up on the roof (and I have no idea how) but now she's scared to come down and I have to climb onto the ledge of the balcony to get her down. She also plays fetch like a dog. She'll bring me this toy of hers and I'll throw it and then she'll chase after it and bring it back over and over and over again. If I'm trying to sleep and she wants attention (which she always does) she'll stick her paw in my face and tap me until I pet her. Basically, she's just a nut but I seriously can't imagine not having her. That's one thing I'm really not looking forward to--having to live in the sorority house and not having my kitty for a year.

I have two cats, Ubu & Scimitar and two dogs, Babes & Bubba. Ubu is an orange & white domestic longhair mix and Scimitar is a black Persian mix. Babes & Bubba are mutts - their mom is a white & black bulldog (either american bull or pit) mix and who knows what their dad was.

Hey all!!!

I have 2 Dwarf Hamsters named Matics (as in MATH..)and Deziak (as in AFRO...hee hee hee)...

Anywho, Deziak is a little larger (but still fits in the palm of my hand) than lil' Matics and tries to punk him out of his food (there is enough food for everybody, but Deziak is a lil' on the ghetto side)...

If they don't like the food that I give them, they kick it all over the place. It happened only once, so I know better. Their favorite toy is the hamster ball. They get to run around as much as they please, but without me losing them. I love my babies!!

Thanks AXO Alum, I have seen some ferrets before and they are so cute! BUT, they are illegal in California, last I heard! Crazy, huh?

localsororities, are all of those fish in the same tank? I heard that bettas had to live alone- or is it that they cant live with other bettas? I also heard that if you put two tanks next to each other and they each contain a betta then they get really big and kind of swell up. Is this true?

This is my cat, Pussy Galore. Her name comes from the James Bond film 'Goldfinger'. I'm a huge Bond fan. Anyway, she's about a year and 5 months old. I got her at the Animal shelter. She's VERY prissy. When we first got her, she was scared of our dog--but now, she attacks the dogs! They try to stay out of her way mostly, and she'll actually CHASE THEM if they are running around. We also let her out on a cable (only if we're out with her) and the neighbor's Chiwawa (sp?) is terrified of her.

http://content.communities.msn.com/i...ID_Message=346

These are our two dogs. The one on the left is Guinevere. She's my baby. She'll be 2 in June. She was my first pet that I raised myself, I had childhood pets--but my mom took care of them. She's a crazy dog! She loves to be outside. We got her from the shelter as well. She was 8 weeks old when we got her.

On the right is Maeve. We just got Maeve on March 31st. She's grown mostly. We estimate her age to be a little over a year. She's very affectionate, but we think she's been abused by a man because she's very afraid of Bryan--so he's being extra gentle with her, hoping she'll eventually see that he won't hurt her. We also got her from the shelter. We found that she likes wood--so far she's chewed up a dowl rod and chewed the corner off of my brand new coffee table, but I still love her. Coffee tables are replacable.

I have a little runt of the litter calico named Alaska. She's SUCH a cutie. I rescued her from the pound http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif
The cutest thing she does is when I sleep in, she knows what time I normally get up (6:30) and gets right in my face, sits there for a while, scrunches up her nose, closes her eyes, and licks my nose!! She's got nasty cat-food breath, so of course she wakes me long before she gets to the nose!! She's so funny, if I turn over she jumps right over me and keeps trying until I "gently" remove her from the bed or get up!!!

BTW, Allie_XO = I have a friend with a 20+ lb. cat named Tiggy also!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I got a snake man! It's a California King, and is about 8-10 months old. One of my buddies got it last fall, and decided he wanted a python, so i took this one off his hands. I named him(?) Walter, after John Goodman's character in the Big Lebowski. Don't even ask how I came up with that http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Four other guys in my house have snakes, and one alum has one that he kept at the house. Between us we have a Cal. King, 3 Ball Pythons, a Burmese Python, and a wild caught Rat Snake. That Rat Snake is MEAN too!

When I was a kid, I had several cats and dogs. My favorite cat was named Mr. T. I was 7 years old and the biggest A-Team fan, what can I say? My dad has been taking care of a stray cat lately. He named it Charlie, and it helps him work in the garage.

Since it is one in the morning and I can't sleep.....
Right now i have a cat named "teake" we named her after that really fast "thing" in the first Ewoks movie (Battle of Endor or something??) b/c the cat tore around this house!
We also recently bought a golden lab and for the first time ever I got to name an animal in this family and I chose "Dolby". Many people finish my sentence with "surround sound" but I named her after Thomas Dolby the 80s musician ("she blinded me with science" song)

Oh my gosh, what a cool topic. Animals are the BEST and hearing that you all love your animals is helping me get to know a different side of you. How cool! I have a little Pomeranian--sweet tiny little fur ball of love--and a Rottweiler named Toto. I love animals!

My cat Tiger!!! I never liked cats until I met my boyfriend's mother's cat Maggie...she was just everything any other cat I ever met was not...liked to be held, petted, cuddled. Well soon after I got my own....The Tiger. He is the perfect cat for me becasue he actually thinks he's a dog. He plays fetch and everything. He is just too funny. Also, a little clumsy, which is not normal for cats (I think he is just hyper and doesn't pay attention). He falls off things and runs into windows a lot, but I still love him.

I have a beagle named Buddy. I wanted to name him Snoopy, but he's actually my brother's dog, so that didn't go over very well. I have a black cat named Inc and 2 other cats named Scooter and Peaches. I also have a purple betta named Skully (Sigmas would know why)!

I've got a dalmation named Jake, which is a crappy name, but when we bought him, he'd already been named so there wasn't much we could do unless we wanted to give him an identity crisis. My dalmation before that was named domino and he was a cool dog cause one of the guys on UofK's basketball team gave him to us...

deltaphi94 02-19-2002 03:26 PM

I've had my cat (Pookie) for 10 years. She got her name because I had a red tabby at the same time... I got them less than a week apart. Anyway, once they warmed up to each other, they would sleep all cuddled up, and the red tabby would sleep hugging her. :) So, I named them Garfield and Pookie... after Garfield and his teddy bear.

When hubby and I got married, I inherited 2 dogs, and both are supposed to be hunting dogs. One is a Brittany spaniel and the other is a German short haired retriever. The brittany and I didn't hit it off because he ate my sliipers, a pair of my jeans, and all of my oven mits and pot holders. Then, he tried to eat my cat.
The short hair was a puppy when I met him. (hubby adopted him while we were dating) He is the biggest lap dog I have ever seen, and I seriously doubt he will ever be a hunting dog. He hides from the slightest noise, so I just don't see it happening.
Anyway, the short hair gets overly excited when people are around, and he bounces. I mean, all four paws off the floor. We keep them in crates at night or if we leave. My mom came to visit for a few hours not too long ago, and I had the dogs in their crates when she came into the room. My over-sized lap dog was so excited to see her that he started bouncing in his crate.

I have my Miniature Schnauzer, Gatsby. He hates everyone but me and my immediate family so I have to put him outside when I have guests over but I think he's the greatest! He has a history of developing bladder stones so he's been operated on 5 times and has to eat $40 a case designer doggy food but I wouldn't trade him for anything. Let my kids pay their own college tuition! (j/k! well, sorta!)

Gus is my exotic terrier mix. Born and reared on the mean streets of Newark, New Jersey, we adopted him from the Humane Society. The sweetest, most even-tempered creature God ever put on this earth. He had a rough start in life and 8 years later is still grateful for any kindness you show him. He's been very healthy except he plays hard and at different times has torn both of his ACL's. The good news is that they've been replaced with, I think, fishing wire or some such thing so we don't have to worry about them tearing again.

I have two hampsters, Julie and Angel. I got them for my daughters but guess who cleans the cages? Still, they're a lot of fun and I especially get a kick out of putting them in their little balls so they can run around the house!

I would also like to mention my departed friend, Powerhitter, a Greyhound. Greyhounds tend to have strange names, by the way! He was a retired racer and a total couch potato! So gentle, I never once heard him bark at anyone. I loved him; what a great pet. He lived until almost 14 ears old, so I know he had a long, full life with people who loved him :)

I wanted a cat or a dog when I was little, but both my mother and my sister are allergic. Instead we had a bird that I named Jamie. I then got a blue beta fish that I named Beta. I was six and not very creative. We had a series of tropical fish during my childhood. We than got a Cockatiel that we named Sunny because he had marks on his face that looked like the sun. I don't have pets now, but I am so tempted when I pass the pet store and see the cute puppies and kittens.

I have 5 cats (what do you expect -I'm a vet.!)

Stinky-rescued her after she was HBC (hit by car)-she is a paraplegic but gets around well and even climbs on the bed and couch. I express her bladder and she goes #2 in the toilet.

Little Man-he is retarded-he fell off of a balcony when he was 1 day old and had head trauma. I tube fed him for 2 months-he went everywhere that I went and we are connected at the hip. He is blind in his rt. eye and partially in his left but he runs around like a "normal" cat (minus his permanent head tilt to the left and he circles to the left also-cannot circle to the rt. at all)

Munchkin-neurotic siamese

Sullivan-another neurotic siamese

Zerbert-my 15.2# torti who is just like a dog (she is the most normal out of all of my pets-and that ain't saying much)

I have a dog but my mom adopted her from me b/c I live in a condo with no yard.

Well, I'm sure that all the GC Alpha Gams are wondering what took me so long to post on this topic! :p

They all know that I am a total maniac for my chihuahua, Pumpkin. She is the sweetest little thing to ever run on four legs! Every morning when she hears the alarm clock ring, she'll jump on our bed, climb onto my chest and lick my nose to say good morning.

Pumpkin is also a fixture at our weekly GC chats, because she likes to sit in my lap while I'm at the computer and type on the keyboard to say hello to everyone.

Granted, she is in the doghouse tonight because she climbed up onto the table, picked out the chicken from Sean's salad and ate it all while we weren't looking...but I'm sure he will forgive her soon enough! I thought it was pretty funny myself (hey, it wasn't MY dinner, lol).

Here is a picture of her: www.geocities.com/lajuniorcircle/scrapbook.html

Isn't she cute? :)

My kind of pet are cats. I had one growing up who was a stray. We named him Kitsle. Kitsle means Tickle in Yiddish, actually though Ketsle is Yiddish for Kitten. He pasted away several years ago. We had to put him to sleep as he was full of cancer. :(
Also, there is my family dog, Shana. She is doing rather well for an older dog. Shana is Yiddish for Pretty. This is definately a misnomer.
Then there is my cat that I have presently. Carter is the sweetist little guy. He loves to play with his crazy ball (a small rubber bouncy ball). Carter is very well behaved, he has NEVER scrached my couch or other furniture EVER. Lisa

I have a pet frog. He's a White's Tree Frog and he's really cool. He has sticky fingers and he can climb up the walls. And he barks, not rib-its like a normal frog :D

I also have my boyfriend's beta fish. He was living inside a lava lamp (without the lava) until my boyfriend broke the lamp. Somehow, I became the legal guardian of the fish. He's pretty boring, but he's been alive for almost 2 years.

I really want a puppy, but I have to wait until I have my own house. Which better be sometime soon ;)
