Starting New Local

Hey Yall!

This might be a stupid question but me and some girls are starting to work on starting a local on our campus but heres the thing...We chose a name that we felt really resembles what we want to stand for but then realized that it is an existing honorary society but they are not registered with the Professional Fraternity Association and have no offical website. We do not intend to be a honor society by anymeans but can we still use this name?

I hope this question makes sense lol...
Thanks!

It is not totally unheard of to have one name be used for different organizations. A quick gander at http://www.greekpages.com will show you that :) . I hear that even my own sorority's name is being somewhere else (although they are a very small group....and have not registered there name or anything like that).

Legally speaking, a [corporate] name can be trademarked. There are different levels of trademarking; state, federal and international. I could not tell you the fees off the top of head....but it's usually not cheap. At least $200. If you incorporate the sorority, you will need to make sure the name is unique - but only among other incorporated entities in that state. It is unlikely that this other group is incorporated in your state as well. If it is, you could incorporate in another state (check laws though...sometimes board members of the corporation must be state residents).

There is a group of KDPhi girls on our campus who are not actually affiliated with the national organization of KDPhi...

They call themselves alpha Kappa Delta Phi. Maybe you should consider something like that? Everyone still knows them as KDPhi, even though technically they are aKDPhi...

SoCalGirl 10-02-2007 01:56 AM

aKDPhi added the a after they found out about KDPhi.

Xidelt 10-02-2007 07:01 PM

aKDPhi is a national Asian-interest sorority.

I think it's only a real problem if the pre-existing sorority is incorporated, making it technically illegal to use their name. But I'll check up on that.

That's only if you are incorporating in the same state or if they have a registered trademark on their name.

Oh ok! That makes it much easier then. Thanks for the info =]

First of all, who are you.

Secondly, dixiegirl09, definitely do a search of other threads here on GC about this topic, it sounds like you have an idea of what's going on, but it never hurts to read other's experiences. Good luck, I am in a local (I'm an alumnae) and we're here if you need anything :)

Organizations can also be incorporated in one state & register as a "dba" (doing business as) in other states. You can check the secretary of state websites for most states to do research on organizations incorporated or registered as a dba.

This site is also helpful - http://www3.telus.net/tyee/greek/

Good luck!

I tried to track them down with no luck, If you read one of Corina's last posts, she says that affiliating with Theta Nu Xi wasn't going to happen, but she never really gave a reason. There was a thread floating around last week that mentioned the thread, I never read it all the way through until a few days ago, perhaps older GCer's might know where she is/ they are. The UCSC website lists a few greek org's (Alpha Psi being one of them) but nothing about NBO or anything like that.
bummer! :o

SthrnZeta 12-19-2007 11:12 AM

I found this: http://www2.ucsc.edu/wmcenter/studentOrgs.html and it still lists NBO as an org there along with Alpha Psi. Interesting that Gamma Phi Beta isn't listed there though, although they're definitely still on campus.

And here's GPhiB's website and it states they had their first Panhel Recruitment with KKG: http://www.gammaphibeta.net/pb/wp_d6...70981267564835

Now I'm really confused...

SthrnZeta 12-19-2007 11:17 AM

Ok, here is the UC Santa Cruz website, it does not list NBO as an org but does list Alpha Psi along with GPhiB and KKG, along with another group, Kappa Zeta. Is NBO no more??? :(

Yeah, there isn't a date with that women's center page, so Idk when that is from (I found that too in my quest lol)

So, GphiB and KKG just had their first recruitment... and Kappa Zeta, that isn't even NPC right? (excuse my local-ness lol), I did a search on it, there are Kappa Zeta chapters of GLO's, but nothing by itself.

SthrnZeta 12-19-2007 01:14 PM

Yeah, I think the women's page is outdated and Kappa Zeta does come up on Google searches but the link doesn't work that goes to their website so not sure what their deal is. KZ isn't NPC but they may be an associate member as some locals are on other campuses, like I would imagine A-Psi is since they've been on campus for a while.

I'd just really like to know what became of NBO (and I hope it's not what I fear happened...)

LucyKKG 12-28-2007 04:55 PM

Hey! I go to UCSC so I can clarify all of that. Gamma Phi and Kappa (woo!) are the only NPCs on campus. KZ and AY are locals. I've never heard of NBO, and I've gone to UCSC since fall 2005. Tri Chi and Phi Delta Xi are also multicultural locals on campus. This website http://soar.ucsc.edu/organizations.htm has an updated list of orgs registered with the school.

LucyKKG 12-29-2007 03:31 AM

Update: I read most of wishinhopin's thread, and yeah, NBO isn't on campus anymore. Neither is Theta Nu Xi. NBO got so many more interest packets than we did! Haha, I'm not THAT jealous. I love Kappa, obviously!

I read the whole thread too...a while back over the summer. It is a great thread.

Was TNX ever on campus? I've always wondered. And, Alpha Psi has yet to get interest...hmmm.

LucyKKG 01-02-2008 02:42 AM

I don't think Theta Nu Xi was ever on campus. She said (in her post) they didn't end up affiliating with them, so I think they always had the name NBO. However, Corina graduated from UCSC before I even started, so I could be wrong.

SthrnZeta 01-02-2008 12:26 PM

Lucy, you're right. In the thread, Corina talks about how they wanted TNX but then it didn't happen and it sounded like she wasn't quite sure why - but then again, she was graduating around that time...
