The Big Bang Theory (CBS)

Anyone else interested in this show? The reviews have been pretty good, and I need another comedy in my life.

I saw the pilot when it leaked this summer and was very unimpressed with it. I also hope that it doesn't interfere with Johnny Galecki playing Trouty on My Boys.

LeslieAGD 09-23-2007 07:03 AM

I am going to give it a try and I have it set to DVR.
The previews look very funny and I don't watch any other half-hour sitcoms.

ZeroCool 09-24-2007 05:53 PM

More Funny!! I'm so on board for this. Premiere is tonight at 830.

LeslieAGD 09-24-2007 10:22 PM

I thought the show was very funny! I don't know how long it will stay funny, but I am in for at least a few more episodes.

icelandelf 09-24-2007 11:44 PM

I loved this show! My DH pointed at me for most of it!

KAKballs13 09-25-2007 05:15 PM

i liked it!

ZeroCool 10-03-2007 04:48 PM

Did anyone check out the second ep...the superman bit was pretty damn funny.

LeslieAGD 10-03-2007 07:28 PM

I think this show is hilariously dorky! I love it! :D

KDAngel 10-04-2007 10:25 AM

I'm a fan. :)

KDAngel 10-16-2007 11:48 PM

So not only is a Roseanne character a main character, but they had Darlene (from Roseanne) last week and Aunt Jackie (from Roseanne) this week. Wonder if they'll have the whole cast before long?

But by no means is this me knocking the show. I love the HIMYM/Big Bang hour. :)

LeslieAGD 10-17-2007 05:48 AM

I DVR the episodes and haven't seen this week's episode yet, but I loved that Darlene/Sarah Gilbert was on last week! This show is very cute.

ZeroCool 11-02-2007 03:07 PM

This is has been pretty good all season...and i think i'm becoming obessed with kaley cuoco...to the point where im watching these.

skylark 11-02-2007 04:50 PM

My husband and I used to be big Heroes fans on Mondays, but we don't watch anymore because we think its stupid that the "mini-series" has developed into a multi-season show. So... we enjoy watching this on Monday nights instead. The network is bad, the set is low-budget 1990s sitcomesque, none of the actors (besides the guy from Roseanne) are at all well-known... BUT it is effing hilarious! The writers definitely make the show with this one!

Kaley Cuoco made a decent name for herself in 8 Simple Rules with John Ritter. I didn't watch that show, but until he passed away she continuing to grow in popularity.

nittanyalum 11-05-2007 10:21 PM

Ok, I caught this tonight (honestly, this thread is what made me look for it :)), and I now love this show. I've always been a Johnny Galecki fan (and I love him on My Boys too, mu) and I liked Kaley on 8 Simple Rules and thought she was cute tonight, but my new favorite is the guy who plays Sheldon. Oh my god, what a crack up that kid is. I need to go to cbs.com now and see how many back episodes I can watch. :)

Yes, Sheldon is hilarious. Week after week he has me laughing.

If CBS is of no help, you may want to try youtube. :)

Oh, I didn't watch that show (hence why I didn't recognize her), but thanks for the info.

LeslieAGD 11-06-2007 09:23 PM

Please continue encouraging others to give this show a try!
I keep hearing talks that the show might be on it's way out, and I seriously hope that is not true.

I like how her character is not a 'dumb blonde'. Sometimes she's a little clueless on something, but she's not stupid. That's a lot sexier than a 'dumb blonde' in my opinion.

The way she acts towards the guys reminds me of "Beauty and the Geek". She doesn't act like she is all above them and, even though Sheldon irritates her, she's never mean or rude to them.

MysticCat 02-12-2010 10:53 AM

Bumping because I recently learned that Jim Parsons (Sheldon) is a Pike.

This is, I think, a major reason that the show has taken such root among people who have, or have family members with, Asperger's. I can't tell you how often my wife and I laughed and said we can see our son acting or reacting exactly like Sheldon. It can be very cathartic.

Although the writers have said they didn't create Sheldon as having Asperger's (they just think of him as "Sheldony"), Jim Parsons has noted "I can say that he couldn't display more facets of it." But he's not a two-dimensional character, nor is he simply the butt of jokes. As annoying as he can be, the others -- Penny especially, perhaps -- still accept him like he is.

DrPhil 02-12-2010 11:13 AM

My favorite comedy. :)

Right up there with Family Guy.

ETA: As far as Asperber's and Sheldon, I see the traits in him and also see how he's just "Sheldony." All in all, it works with the show which is more than I can say for Vincent D'Onofrio's character on L&O: Criminal Intent.

Ooh La La 02-12-2010 11:55 AM

Aw, I love this show. I think Sheldon is simply incredibly eccentric. I loved him in the ball pit last week!

thetygerlily 02-12-2010 12:42 PM

I love this show. DH wasn't impressed with the pilot but I stuck with it because of the Barenaked Ladies opening (anything they do a theme song for must be good, right?). But it definitely got its groove going and is a blast. One of the few shows I will literally LOL for.

Thanks for sharing MC. I had seen some interviews about the autism bit (that it isn't officially part of his character) but didn't know he was Greek! He really makes the show.

ree-Xi 02-12-2010 01:05 PM

We've watched this show since the pilot. Hubby (and I somewhat, via osmosis) are techie and scifi fans, and I love science, so we "get" a lot of what's going in. As a software engineer, he's worked with these types for eons.

There's an interesting article (with clips) about an episode of BBT with and without a laugh track. Some people will say "it's just not funny without a laugh track" or that it sounds awkward, but as a trained (but "local") actress, I think that is because the actors add the pauses to allow for the laugh track/audience (is it taped live??).

Check it out for yourself. For the record, I am not a fan of laugh tracks. I think that it dumbs down the audience.

i've seen a few episodes, and i can see how the Sheldon character has some Asperger's traits. i liked both Penny and his role. something in the timbre of the others' voices annoys me, though.

side note:
the initial draft of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) is posted up for review and comments at http://www.dsm5.org/Pages/Default.aspx until 4-20-10.
some folks were just talking about it on my hometown forum.

I'm curious as to what you thought of the non-laugh-track episode, if you had watched it.

:) (Because I like the word "bazinga" and miss nittanyalum)

I still love this show and have been watching back-to-back episodes.

agzg 10-17-2011 07:37 PM

I was excited when it went to syndication.

Also, we named our cats Sheldon and Leonard.

I enjoy it on syndication. I can now watch The Big Bang Theory, switch the channel to avoid Two and a Half Men, and switch back to watch the second episode of The Big Bang Theory. :)

Cool cat names.

Mevara 10-17-2011 08:09 PM

Sheldon I think makes the entire show! He is the best character!!

ASTalumna06 10-17-2011 11:00 PM

I find it ironic that this thread was bumped today, as this show just happened to play on my flight to Houston earlier, and I actually decided to watch it for the first time ever.

But I have to say.. I thought it was AWFUL. I didn't even chuckle. Not once. And the "audience" laughing was obnoxious and annoying, and it seemed like it was previously recorded and played back every 5 seconds during the show.

I don't even think this is worth watching a second time.

But that's just my opinion :D

Huh. And normally your opinions are . . . reasonable. :p

Big Bang is awesome.

DubaiSis 10-18-2011 08:36 AM

I have to say, ASTalumna06, you might have not gotten the full experience watching it in flight and without most of the back story. Try to find season 1 somewhere and give it another shot. There was one season (I can't remember which) that was decidedly less funny than the others and if you caught one of those episodes without knowing any of the characters, I could see you not getting it.

I, on the other hand, am devastated that we don't get BBT here. We recently watched all of the episodes (on disk) from season 1 to last season and now I have to figure out how to get my hands on the current ones.

Soft Kitty, Warm Kitty,
Little Ball of Fur.
Happy Kitty, Sleepy Kitty,
Purr, purr, purr.

Just 'cause.

I may or may not sing this to Sheldon (my cat Sheldon) once a week.

We didn't go in there thinking that we'd name them Sheldon and Leonard, but there was another kitten in the shelter named Sheldon and we thought it was the most perfect name for a cat ever. Because we got two, and one was decidedly more spazzy and one was decidedly more "normal," we went for it.

When they're adult cats maybe we'll start calling them Dr. Sheldon Cooper and Dr. Leonard Hofstadter, but I think that might be taking it a bit too far.
