Cops arrested Simpson, 19, on Friday after she reportedly walked into Logan International Airport with a fake bomb made of lights, wires, and putty strapped to her chest. She was charged with disturbing the peace and perpetrating a hoax.
An MIT spokeswoman on Friday confirmed that Simpson is currently enrolled in the school's famed computer science program. The spokeswoman could not say whether the school is contemplating any disciplinary action against Simpson. "It's too early to say," she said. The spokeswoman said MIT is planning to release a formal statement on the matter.
Simpson's blog indicates she previously lived in Hawaii. It reveals a personality that could be described as quirky. She writes that she previously spent time "traveling the world and saving the planet from evil villains with my delivered-just-in-time gadgets." Two of the flights that were hijacked as part of the September 11 terror attacks originated at Logan. As a result, Boston city officials have little tolerance for terror-related hoaxes. Earlier this year, two men were arrested for planting bomb-like devices around Boston in an effort to drum up publicity for the cable show Aqua Teen Hunger Force.

At MIT, we used the acronym SPAMIT - Stupid People At MIT. There used to be a group that sold t-shirts with the acronym and a doctored version of the MIT seal - one of the men on the seal is wearing fuzzy bunny slippers, for example.

If anyone deserves the label SPAMIT, it's this chick.

Apparently, when the police approached her, she did exactly what they told her to do - and if she hadn't, they could have used deadly force.

Cut me a break. It was a circuit board. Open up any computer, your walkman, your tv...anything and there's a circuitboard inside. That's not a bomb. It looks nothing like a bomb. In fact, why don't you list the number of instances where someone wore an object that looked nothing like a bomb on a shirt and walked around an airport? Oh wait, that's never/rarely happened and hence lends nothing to precedence?

She should have been shot for that? That's the appropriate thing to do? Why not also shoot every person that's not carrying a bible and a Republican membership card in their hand?

it's only as stupid to do nothing and let her on a plane and the plane blows up and the FAA has to put together a report as to why nothing was done and how did she manage to slip by security and how could this have ahppened after 9/11........that's all.

Let's recount what happened here:
1) She did not have a bomb or anything that resembled a bomb. It was electronics. Nothing resembled anything that might explode. So why not shoot anyone with an ipod? Oh wait they don't do that.

2) People have said they don't feel sorry for her being shot. You then say that you'd be OK with me being shot.

Essentially the cops were wrong, had no excuse to be wrong and didn't apologize.

You were wrong in your assumptions and then exposed the fact that you are a violent sub-human.

I would suspect that the airport security may simply have not known exactly what it was - and of course were going to err on the side of caution.
And the next question - if they knew what it was, wouldn't they wonder WHY someone was walking through an airport with a circuit board? Goodness knows there is plenty of publicity when airport security fails to catch a "fake" bomb plant. I can see why the woman in question would be detained, and why she should be offered no apology.
Airport security has no sense of humor, FYI.

I didn't say shooting anyone was OK.

I think it's dumb to try to carry something aboard an aircraft that makes the security people think it's a bomb.

Did she intend for the circuit board to resemble a bomb? Did she intend to rankle security? If so, she ought to face serious consequences.

Security in this day and age is not something to be joked about or played with. It is a fact of life and a necessity.

6 years ago, about 3,000 people would tend to have agreed that airport security is not a worthy target for a prank. Whether she's an eccentric or not, she ought to be hit hard for this.
