"Wheel of Time" author, Robert Jordan, dead at 58

http://www.comcast.net/news/entertai...qh=itn_fantasy

The Wheel of Time series was at 11 books at the time of his passing. He was working on the 12th book.

Drolefille 09-17-2007 03:21 PM

That's sad. :( The loss of an author, particularly an author fantasy, is like a loss of imagination in the world.

(Although honestly, his books... not the best.)

James 09-17-2007 03:44 PM

Thats a freaking disaster. I read 11 of his books. He deliberately drew it out to milk it for money . .. which is fine ... but he didn't finish them?? Damn irresponsible.

Ripped off King Arthur like you wouldn't believe as well.

Here's hoping he finished them but was just holding it back so that his fans can toast him while reading whatever really happens to the Dragon Reborn.

I, however, made it to the 8th book before I just couldn't get through it anymore.

I read the last one and it didn't suck! I was really happy about that until I realised how underwhelming an achievement that is. Apparently he spent a good amount of his last days dictating the book to others so SOMEONE will be writing book 12.

Honestly, it's not like Brian Herbert taking up for Frank- the new authors on this one have a lot to work with and can write something better than his output of the last few years.

RIP to the author, even if I stopped liking his books.

James 09-17-2007 06:20 PM

the new Dune books . . well I didn't like them.

Dune. Great.

Dune Messiah, Children of Dune . . . Even God emperor of Dune. I suppose he needed mortgage money badly.

Heretics and Chapter House though . . really good stuff.

Ditto. I liked Dune, but I realized I was reading the sequels for the sake of the first one. In a "it has to get better, I should get through this" sort of way. And it got WEIRD(er). But I haven't picked up the newer ones. I'll have to check them out.

James 09-17-2007 07:26 PM

Did you read heretics or chapterhouse? They were more in the tradition of the first dune book, but better written I thought.

Nope, haven't read anything by his son.

James 09-17-2007 07:43 PM

No no no.

Heretics and chapterhouse were written by Frank Herbert (the dad) and take place maybe . . 1-2 (or so) thousand years after God Emperor of Dune.

But they are much better written than the previous dune sequels. More like the original Dune.

Yeah the last 3 Frank wrote were... interesting.

The ones his son wrote almost all suck (the prequel books are truly awful). So it's just a bummer all round, lol.

James 09-17-2007 08:42 PM

Yes. I suppose the money is worth more than his Dad's good name and the reputation/memory of a really respected Fictional Universe.

Perhaps he should leave his Dad's shadow and show he can write something else.

Doh. I guess I just stopped paying attention after not being able to finish... I think it was God Emperor of Dune. I'll check them out! :)

My husband read all of his books and was pretty pissed last night when he found out. Apparently Jordan was in the middle of writing the second to last book in the series, according to the article we read last night.

Drolefille 09-18-2007 12:58 PM

Word is that he left enough information with others, via dictation and notes, for them to finish at least the book if not the series.

skylark 09-18-2007 02:32 PM

Really? My husband will be SO excited to hear that. At this point he's feeling like he read 14,000 or so pages for nothing...

lovelyivy84 09-18-2007 02:46 PM

If we get someone writing who never mentions:

1. the color of shawls, sleeves, jewelry, coats, overcoats, leggings
2. pulling shawls or hair
3. a woman acting like a screeching harridan
4. spankings

then I will be BEYOND pleased. Jordan was really fixated onwomen getting spanked, I'm sorry.

That's only what I heard, so it may be false hope, but I do know he was dictating his 12th book near the end.

What about a woman who didn't "sniff" at everything?

Those sniffs are what made me stop buying the book. The only reason I read was because a friend gave up and passed all his on to me, lol.

Book-A-Minute

Quote:

The Eye of the World
By Robert Jordan
Ultra-Condensed by David J. Parker and Samuel Stoddard
Rand al'Thor
Tam is my father.
(Nothing happens. Then, nothing happens. Then, unexpectedly, nothing happens. Everything is FRAUGHT with PORTENT.)
Moiraine
Everybody come with me.
Everybody
No. Well, ok.
(They travel a LOT. Something happens that isn't explained. Something happens that doesn't make sense. Something happens.)
Rand al'Thor
Tam is my father.

THE (predictable, cliched, dumb) END

Fans
Yah! Wah hah! This is the greatest book ever! Whoo hoo! This is the greatest series ever! Whoopie! Yee haw!
Quote:

Book 2

Rand al'Thor
I want to do something. But doing this something is probably what the Aes Sedai want me to do, so I will do something else. But doing that something else may be what they want me to do, because they think I think they want me to do the first thing, so I'll decide to do this other thing instead. So I'll just do the first thing, since I want to do it anyway. Screw them.
(Repeat seven hundred times.)

Wow. These books sound incredibly sexist. Maybe hubby and I will have to talk...

I don't know if I would say sexist per se, they are just all the same. Every character acts the same and they are all incredibly arrogant. jordan is bad at show-don't-tell- he will tell us a character is powerful, wse, intelligent, etc. but what we see is her being mean, petty, vindictive and willfully blind.

Honestly, I don't know that they're sexist. In fact the women theoretically have all the power in the society, I just don't think it's good writing. I'll post the rest of the "Book a minutes" DO realize they're parody.

Spoiler warnings.

The Dragon Reborn

Being the Dragon Reborn stinks. I'm out of here.
(Moiraine and the gang CHASE him. But even though they are on HORSES, and he is WALKING, they never CATCH UP. This is supposed to be MYSTERIOUS but is really just a plot CONVENIENCE for Robert JORDAN.)
Perrin
I hate wolves.
(Mat and others show up out of NOWHERE. This is supposed to be MYSTERIOUS but is really just a plot CONVENIENCE for Robert JORDAN.)

Rand al'Thor
I am the Dragon Reborn. (kills the EVIL SUPREME BAD GUY)
Robert Jordan
Fooled you! That wasn't really the EVIL SUPREME BAD GUY! Now I can write forty more books!
