My 2007 Rush
I am at my new university, 18 years old, and am going to go through recruitment after much debating and arguing with myself over this decision mainly because i have fears regarding recruitment and sororities but I do want this so i am willing to give it a try.
Information night is next week and recruitment starts the following week. I am nervous and excited at the same time. I have been reading about recs and all sorts of things like that but at my campus, it is very laidback and casual and not competitive at all so i have decided to not get recs. I hope this decision doesnt hurt me later. There are 4 sororities on my campus. I have met girls from 3 of the sororities but i am hoping to run into girls from the last one. They all seem so nice and friendly. I will update when everything starts. I am excited and nervous! |
Good luck and enjoy your recruitment!
|
good luck with recruitment! :)
|
Thank you. I am excited at the idea of what may happen but also nervous about the bad stuff like getting dropped. I try not to think negatively but i cant help it right now.
I just saw 2 girls from one of the sororities wearing really pretty blue shirts with their letters on them in yellow. ;) They carried matching bags with their letters. |
I know what you mean, my school doesn't have a very competitive rush and I'm pretty afraid about that too! Is your school's recruitment very competitive?
|
Best of luck . . . it sounds like you are going into recruitment with the right attitude!
|
May your shoes be comfy and your invitations be the ones you really want! Best of luck to you!
|
I am so excited for you. Can't wait to read the posts
|
Good luck to you!!
Everyone has given great advice, but I'll chime in. Don't preoccupy yourself with worrying about being "dropped". This time is all about you and what you think works best for you. The way I look at it is your "job" during recruitment is to find out a) if the obligations of Greek Life are of interest to you and something you support b) discover whether you feel comfortable with a chapter and make decisions what your heart tells you and finally c) take this opportunity to get to know all these women that are now your classmates and to get to know your campus. I'm not questioning your commitment to be Greek but I've seen too many chapters that have issues filling their house because too many women pledged thinking it was "cool" but didn't understand the financial or academic obligations and then deactivated. It should be your Panhellenic and the chapter's responsibilities to educate you and your fellow new members on Greek Life but don't be afraid to ask questions either! (I'm not bashing on greek life at all but I worry that sometimes it becomes a numbers game and we don't live in a perfect world either) Your college experience will be what you make of it if you are Greek and the same holds true for students that are not. (Now this is the Student Affairs person in me talking!! :)) |
Good luck to you during recruitment. Make sure to ask lots of good questions, show your interest (usually by asking the questions and demonstrating genuine excitement about being at the parties), and remember to relax and have fun!!

I have signed up for recruitment and am really excited. I did make a dumb mistake that I guess anyone with little knowledge of sorority life can make. I know there are 4 sororities on my campus. Last week, I saw two girls wearing shirts that had the letters PX on them. They said hello to me and I started talking to them and then asked them what sorority they were in because I was not familiar with PX sorority and I never saw them listed on the school Greek Life website.
They didn't laugh at me but were very nice in explaining about recruitment counselors and what the do. They assured me that all this would be explained during Information Night which is this week on Thursday. I was so embarassed and I feel so stupid now. :( I hope to get beyond this and am ready because Day 1 is on Friday of this week! |
Also, I am starting to feel some stress over this. My roommate is a legacy to one of the houses and our other friend and her roommate all have ties to some of the chapters because of relatives and friends they have there. I'm the only one that doesn't know anyone since I'm not from the area.
Recruitment is not competitive at all at my school. It is very relaxed (from what I've been told). |

I've had PNMs ask me this all the time at info night before they have their orientation because they don't know what it is. |
I made the same mistake! I worked with a Rho Chi on campus and asked her what sorority she was in and she very nicely explained what it meant. I was lucky to have worked with her prior to recruitment to learn so much about it going in - as it turned out, she was a Zeta! :D
|
Oh sweetie! Don't stress out about the Rho Chi thing! I was a Rho Gamma (recruitment guide) last year, and so many girls thought we were our own separate sorority that the Rho Gammas this year aren't allowed to wear the RG letters without recruitment guide being spelled out somewhere on the shirt too...oops :)
I'm sure you will do great, GOOD LUCK!! |
Thanks guys. I still blush when I think of that story and it doesn't help that I told my roommate (who knows everything) and she thought it was funny and likes reminding me of it all the time.

My countdown has begun!
I see that everyone has given code names in other threads so I'm going to do the same. I'm going to name them after some of the women on Greys Anatomy (my favorite show). Meredith Christina Izzie Callie I have met girls from Meredith, Christina, and Callie so far. I have seen the girls from Izzie but have not met any. |
I don't watch Grey's Anatomy, but I'll go ahead and root for Izzie since Katharine Heigl was funny in Knocked Up. Also, TinyDancer16 ended up at the chapter she named Izzie.:)
|
to reiterate what everyone else has said, do not feel bad or embarassed abut asking the recruitment counselors what sorority they were in-i'll just bet that you were not the only one asking that question!! and it is a perfectly legitimate question-why should you know that recruitment counselors disaffialiate from their own sororities and on some campus have special t-shirts made with rho chi or rho gamma on them? answer:you shouldn't!
best wishes that you get over your butterflies and are able to enjoy the process. good luck. |
I'm going with Callie! Good luck!
|
I'm going to root for Christina - and may you find your McChapter! (ha ha - couldn't resist...)

I too am rooting for Cristina. |
I've never watched Grey's Anatomy so I have no idea who to root for. But good luck to you! Have a great time!! :)
|

|
I don't watch GA, but I do love the name Callie. If, of course, one must choose!

Is recruitment still going on?
|
Yeah, I wanna know what happened???
|
I forgot! :o I have been so busy and 2 of my professors decided to give tests last wekk so I was not able to update on what happened.
I wanted to give a day by day update on how everythign went but I am too happy and excited (and busy) to do that so instead, I'll give you a summary of my thoughts, opinions, and the final verdict. Meredith - They were really nice and the youngest sorority on campus. I liked the girls. In the end, I had to decide that though I made good friends here, I was not meant to be a Meredith. My roommate went here though because she knew she was Meredith before recruitment started. Christina - My home! :D They were the girls with the totes that I saw on campus and I was alwasy attracted to their sorority and just the general feeling of happiness when I was with them. Izzie - They were nice to me but we did not click at all. As shallow and dumb as it sounds, on the first night, one of the sisters was wearing jeans, birkenstocks, and her lettered sweatshirt while the others were dressed up really pretty. I just thought she made a really bad impression on us while everyone else looked like they had put some real effort into impressing us. Callie - I liked them and they were my #2 choice. They were really nice and it turns out that my PX was a sister of this sorority. I felt somewhat embarrassed afterwards when I found out what her affiliation was because while I did not talk bad about them at all, I confided to her that I would much rather be a Christina than a Callie. She was really nice about it though to me and said I could call her anytime since she considered me a friend. So the magic question is who is Christina??? Well, I am very happy and very proud to announce that I am a new member of Christina also known as... PHI SIGMA SIGMA!!! |
I guess I better go introduce myslelf in the Phi Sigma Sigma forum huh? ;):)
|
Congratulations to you and Phi Sig Sig. I am so happy you found your home!!!
|
Thanks! I'm really happy and excited. Everytime I was walking on campus, I would see the Phi Sigs with their shirts, totes, and cars with decals and my heart would do a little dance because I was really in love with them. Now I get to be one of them!
|
Congrats to you and FSS! It sounds like you are truly happy!
|
congratulations!!
|
Congratulations. One of the YS Librarians at another branch is a Phi Sigma Sigma sister.
|
Congrats on Phi Sig!
Also, it's good to see another ULV student on here though you're undergrad and I'm a grad student that's probably 10 years older than you. LOL! Still, have fun and enjoy this time with Phi Sig. They look to be like a really great group at ULV. Here's their website and from what I've heard, they are now the largets GLO on campus b/c of their amazing recruitment. If you know them, can you post what quota was? |
Congratulations! Are you comfortable revealing the other chapters?
