Fossett search area extended again
Fri Sep 7, 2007 7:00 PM ET

By William Albright
RENO, Nevada (Reuters) - The search for U.S. adventurer Steve Fossett, missing in the rugged Nevada desert for five days, was expanded again on Friday, but authorities said they were suspending night flights.
Capt. April Conway, spokeswoman for the Nevada Air National Guard, told reporters the air search had been extended to 17,000 sq miles from 10,000 sq miles (26,000 sq km).

Aviator's Fate Puzzles Search Crews
MINDEN, Nev. - In their quest to find missing aviator Steve Fossett, searchers have come across uncharted plane crashes six times. But none of the wrecks shed light on what may have happened to the multimillionaire.
Hopes that a wrecked plane spotted on the side of a hill might be Fossett's were dashed quickly Friday when ground crews learned the plane last was registered more than three decades ago.

He could still be alive--I read a story yesterday on CNN about a woman surviving TWO WEEKS at the bottom of a canyon with no food or water. Let's hope they do find him!

Thank you for your kind words and thoughts.

We all can only hope.

Jon Steve was and has been a courages person of great esteem.

I too hope his is found alive, but each day is going to be harder to find him alive.

I hope there is some kind of closure and soon.

Here's a video from CNN describing what I do as a volunteer member of the Civil Air Patrol. While it is highly unlikely I'll be asked to help out in the Fossett Search this should give you an idea on how rugged the terrain is in the search area.

These things we do, that others may live.

As those of us who live in Colorado know well, small airplanes and rugged terain are often not a good combination.

As time goes on, chances diminish, but as the CAP Major said, there is still hope.

Also, a thank you is deserved by all of the searchers and emergency responders. That job can be dangerous as well. My former TV station lost a helicopter along with our pilot and an observer while they were helping search for a missing commuter plane. They didn't even have a photographer along (thankfully, in this case), but were just trying to help.

Tom;
Very true on all accounts.
What you may have not understoond or I failed to make clear:
IMVHO/POV, seems as if "Black-Ops" is providing some information.
And if so, thank you very much, I do not care nor need to know more.

Not as 'black' as you think... CAP used ARCHER (Airborne Real-time Cueing Hyperspectral Enhanced Reconnaissance) technology in the search. (The CAP squadron I belong to has an ARCHER equipped aircraft and crews. No, I'm not ARCHER-qualified.) It's already been used with some success in locating downed aircraft. More info: http://www.spacecomputer.com/systems/archer.html

The Air Force Rescue Coordination Center (AFRCC) has suspended the search until there's siginificant leads to reactivate the search.

Bill Comes As State Faces $900M Budgetary Shortfall
CARSON CITY, Nev. -- Gov. Jim Gibbons plans to bill the widow of adventurer Steve Fossett for the unsuccessful recovery search.

Last year, the state spent $687,000 over a month looking for the multimillionaire adventurer after his plane disappeared in northern Nevada. During a month-long search, ground crews, the Nevada National Guard and the Civil Air Patrol scoured a 20,000 square-mile area, but turned up no sign of Fossett or his plane.
