What's in a Name?

What does your name mean? You can just post what it means...you don't have to post your name if you don't want to! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
www.babynamer.com (so informative, PLUS has a survey of what others think of your name, and the perceptions your name gives off!) Also, if an Error pops up, just go back to the previous screen and try again.

My name: Carolyn= English "Joyful Womanly One" Also feminine variant of Charles meaning "strong". Generous; just.

"Heidi-German-Battle Maid"
What does that mean? It sounds like a rock band. Whatever man.

My birth name is Susanna. -- I found this on Newbie's site--

In the apocryphal Book of Tobit Susannah courageously defended herself against wrongful accusation.

Sounds very close to home!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

newbie 04-29-2001 09:40 PM

Hehe this is funny, I clicked on the Survey section...and the ppl who participated in the Survey for "Carolyn" said that my name usually is for:

An Average Energy, Average Athletic, affectionate, driven, secure with herself, and intelligent woman.

Hmm...and for the "Drawbacks" to my name, they said some typical nicknames are: North Carolina, S. Carolina, Carsick, Heroin (what the heck??!!), Christmas Caroler http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

HOW FUN!!

Sue, I'm so sorry that I haven't gotten back to you in e-mail yet. I tried to get into my Email server an hour ago, but I couldn't! Too much traffic I suppose?? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif

SoCalGirl 04-29-2001 09:50 PM

Newbie--We have the same name!!

My nickname way Heroin for the longest time! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif But I got used to it, and I was certainly never confused w/ anyone else. I totally agree on the drawbacks though.

I want to scream when someone calls me CaroLINE! Completely different name!

newbie 04-29-2001 09:59 PM

SoCalGirl--you have the BEST name!!! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif Can you explain to me the "heroin" nickname though? I Just don’t get it. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif My nickname has always been "CaroLINE" (yes, my friends want to annoy me! they also know how much it bugs me!), "CaroLINA" (pronounced li-nah...another annoyance for me personally), S./N. Carolina, Carebear, Cupcake.

ALSO...you might get a kick outta this one http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. In middle school, there was a girl also named Carolyn who had a last name of "Tu" (pronounced "Two"). We were best friends...and guys would sing this song that went, "Carolyn One (me) and Carolyn Two, do dah, do dah. Carolyn One and Carolyn Two, do dah. Do dah." LOL...that was so annoying, but I got stuck with the nickname of Carolyn One all throughout middle school. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

My name:Makeda
Source Language:Arabic
Meaning:Queen of Sheba.(she visited King Solomon of Israel
Triva fact: it was the 4222nd most popular girl's name in 1990

SoCalGirl 04-30-2001 12:14 AM

I like the Care Bear nickname! I've tried to get people to call me that instead but they get a kick out of Heroin. I got the nickname not only cause it rhymes, but I used to always say "You're on crack!" and I'm a total Coca Cola addict! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Carolyn One and Carolyn Two is sooo cute!

Siobhan 04-30-2001 12:18 AM

Siobhan - Irish: gift of God/gracious (Joan=English)

The nicknames are kinda cool, I don't mind being called Shiv, and I couldn't believe Sh-Boom was on there. The one I always hated was Chevron - your town pump. All I can say is thank god I was never Siobhan Siobhan the Leprechaun. http://www.plaudersmilies.de/person/stpaddy.gif

I agree! Newbie, that is just too cute--about the Carolyn One and Carolyn Two http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. The cupcake one is cute, too!

Mine: Jacqueline= This girl's name is used in English and French. Its source is Jacques, a male French name meaning "One who trips up another and takes his place." WHOA! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif

This is interesting: There are 32 forms of "Jacqueline"!! Thanks for the link Newbie, this website is just too cool! I loved the Survey part by the way--interesting to see what others think of my name! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

carrot 04-30-2001 12:38 AM

Siobhan, I was wondering, how do you pronounce your name? Sorry if I sound ignorant! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif I have never encountered a "Siobhan" before!

Don't worry http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. It's pronounced Sha-von.

juniorgrrl 04-30-2001 11:50 AM

Newbie: You must be psychic girl, because I was thinking of posting something simliar! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

My name is Aimée, pronounced A-may. Its French for Amy and means "beloved."

I have always felt my life would be different had I been named something "easier." On the playground, etc, my introductions were always met with "A-what? Huh?" rather than "nice to meet you." I hate introducing myself to people because I hate to have to say my name and teach them the pronunciation. It always leaves me feeling self conscious because my name is "wierd."

Since I've gotten to college, I let most people call me Amy, because its just too much trouble to teach 5 or 6 professors every semester how to say my name, plus classmates that I'll never see again.

When I have a daughter, I'm going to name her something that's unique but not difficult to pronounce. :P

newbie 04-30-2001 07:14 PM

Hehe, thanks SoCalGirl and Carrot http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. Carolyn One was pretty cute, looking back, LOL. On the playground, the boys would always sing that song while the other Carolyn and I walked by http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. And, the funny thing is, I kept on trying to make the boys call me 'Cara'! The other Carolyn wanted to be 'Carrie.' http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

SoCalGirl, I like the nickname Carebear, too! I used to have a collection of their books, as well as a tape of their songs. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif Plus, I had a blue Carebear (don't know what his name was, though!). I was also a huge Rainbow Brite fan http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. I had a mini table with chairs that had Rainbow Brite on it! Plus, I had a bed comforter with her on it, too. Plus I liked strawberry Shortcake http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. Ahh, the good old days! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

Siobhan, I agree, I love your name!

Juniorgrrl, Aimee is such a pretty name! (I'm sorry, I don't know how to put the accent mark on my post!) Plus, I love unique names, and I think the spelling is very pretty! I hope to name my daughter in the future Kylie Jacqueline http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. I love the name Kylie...it's unique but not too strange, and many people seem to like it along with me! Funny, though, I went to the site that I posted--and then I clicked on the "Survey" for 'Kylie'--and most said it would be most fitting for a 12 year-old girl http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. LOL...

P.S...That's too funny how you were going to post this too! I can't wait to talk to you via e-mail soon!!

Sue_XO 05-01-2001 12:24 AM

Hey Newbie- don't worry about the email! - Just soooo glad you are back! Hope all is good in your life chick! You deserve the best! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

KSig RC 05-01-2001 07:02 AM

Actually, I knew mine before this - when I was born, an uncle purchased a little plaque with my name origin, meaning, all that good stuff - it's been on my wall as long as i can remember. That website is pretty cool though too.

So "Robert" = "Shining with Fame" . . . which i think works out ok!

HeidiHo 05-01-2001 10:57 AM

I don't know if I ended up somewhere else before, but now it says
"This girl's name is used in German, Dutch, English, Spanish and Norwegian. Its source is Adelheid, a German name meaning "Exalted nature." "The name Heidi ranked 241st in popularity for females of all ages in a sample of the 1990 US Census."

Guess the first nickname on the drawback list...Heidi Ho! I used to hate being called that, but I embraced it sometime around 11th grade. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

The name Carrie comes from "car", a Gaelic word meaning "Love." I was named after my great-grandmother. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

They don't even have my name.

Go HERE. They have detailed reports for almost every name possible and if they don't have your name you can email them and they will add it. It is really scary how accurate it is most of the time. All of my friends tried it in the dorm and everyone's report was dead on.

Yeah, it was very scary how accurate the little sample that gave me about my name. Most of it was pretty true(except the math part) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif The even scarier part was I just just playing around putting in other names (marissa, elizabeth, sierra, and roxanne) and all these names described me to

Miami1839 05-01-2001 09:00 PM

Heres what I found about my name. My first name is Kevin and my middle name is Fitzgerald. The Fitz part is "son of" and my Dads name is Gerald.

"This boy's and girl's name is used in Dutch and English. Its source is Caoimhin, an Irish Gaelic name meaning "Handsome beloved." Learn more about the heritage of this name.

Alternate spellings of the name Kevin include: Cevin, Keven, Kevyn. There are four other forms of Kevin.

This name's expression of admiration and affection could be specific to the newborn, more like ''handsome baby.''

St. Kevin is one of the patron saints of Dublin, Ireland. His name was not commonly used outside of Ireland until the 1920s. Since then, it has gained and maintained popularity in the U.S., and may get a further boost from the fame of actor-producer-director Kevin Costner."

Knowledge Eternal, that was an AWESOME site! Thanks a lot http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif. Though the first few lines for my name were not correct, it was simply EERIE how right the rest of the analysis was! *shudder* http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif.

thanks again!

This site always confused me because I've been there before and the description for Beth was way off but the one for Elizabeth was much, much closer. I usually just go by my full name officially and on paperwork but have everyone call me Beth. The description for Beth is "shrewd and calculating." http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif Which no one has ever called me in my life. Oh well, just a silly website.

Wasn't Siobahn also a fierce warrior queen? I thought there was Celtic legend about her, because I was debating using that name for one of my daughters in my "let's pretend I'll have a large family one day" world!!

Wow, I thought my cousin came up with "Step on Me" all by her annoying self!

I already knew what my names mean, "Crown Princess Jewelled Rose." Yepyepyep, gotta love how appropriate THAT is! LOL

I wish Epiphany was a nickname, I think that's kinda cool. I HAVE been called Stephanuffeluffagus and Stephanopolis, and friends call me Steffie Weffie when I'm pouting to get me to laugh or yell at them.

I also loved my survey! We Stephanies are so dynamic, striking, intelligent and driven!
