HTC's Fall '07 Rush Thread

Hey everyone! I am rushing this year, and just had water parties so I wanted to start my rush thread. I had so much fun, and cannot wait for formal recruitment to start! I'm just so excited about rush!!!!

For my nicknames, I'm doing types of pie. I haven't seen it done yet, and it was easy to come up with 9 pies.

In no particular order by sorority:

Apple: I really clicked with the girl here. I had so much fun, and our convo was awesome! She was so sweet, and from what I could see, so were all the other girls.

Banana Cream: My girl here didn't really seem interested in me. She wanted to find other rushees she knew. Everyone seemed really sweet, but I just didn't really feel it here.

Cherry: I absolutely loved my girls here! I had two, and they were both so awesome. Right away the second girl and I found something in common; I'm really excited about this group.

Coconut: Similar experience to Banana Cream. She seemed more interested in finding an uncrowded space near the AC than talking to me. Met a few really sweet girls during all of our traveling though.

Key Lime: Had some preconceptions about this group, and they were really not true, but I still didn't really enjoy my experience here. There was one active for two of us, and I felt really out of the conversation, although she tried to make me feel included. Saw a couple girls I know- they are so sweet, so I'm going to try to stay open minded

Lemon Meringue: LOVE LOVE LOVED this house! I know a few LMs and had an awesome experience here. Can't wait to go back

Peach: First house I visited- they had so much energy and seemed so enthusiastic! I loved my girl, and everyone else I met was so sweet and sincere. I'm glad this was my first house- it helped me feel more confident the rest of the day

Pecan: My girl was wiped out! This was near the end of the day though, so I'm not going to let that affect my opinion. I'm curious to see how it is during formal recruitment

Pumpkin: The girls here were so nice and welcoming, but I don't know if it's "me"... I'll just have to wait for formal to make up my mind.

So that's today. Formal starts in four weeks, so there won't really be any updates until then, but I am so excited for it to start!

Thanks for reading!

Good luck to you! :-)

*But I'm a fan of Cherry and you seemed to like them much more than banana cream so, I'll root for Cherry.

What felt so far away such a short time ago is so close now! Convocation is in a week come tomorrow! I can't wait to post more about rush!

navane 09-15-2007 10:43 PM

I'm confused; by the sound of your original post, it seemed like rush was already in progress. However, it now sounds like it hasn't started yet?

She is at Ole Miss. Recruitment hasn't yet begun, but you are correct. Her original post sounded like she had begun. Looks like she has done her research.

jwsteele 09-15-2007 10:52 PM

Navane,

To my knowledge Ole Miss has a round of "ice water parties" a month before recruitment actually starts that is no-frills/no releasing of PNMs that allows both the actives and the PNMs to get comfortable with the recruitment setting. To SEC veterans, do I have that right?

navane 09-15-2007 10:57 PM

Ohhhhh....ok, I get it. Thanks to the both of you for the explanation!

.....Kelly :)

BuckeyeTriDelta 09-15-2007 10:58 PM

Go Lemon Meringue!!!

hottytoddychick 09-16-2007 09:19 PM

JWS is right. We had water parties on Aug 26 and then there's been pretty much only floor meetings since then and convocation is on Sunday in a week!!!! Sorry if I gave the wrong impression!

hottytoddychick 09-23-2007 10:35 PM

Convocation was tonight, and the sheer amount of girls in that building was amazing! I think someone said there were about 900 girls rushing? Wow.

I had to fill out an absentee form, which is really bumming me out. I have class from 5 to 7 on Thursday, which is day 2 of philanthropy and it's my short day of the two. The first party is at 430 and the day is supposed to be over around 7, so I pretty much won't be able to go to any. :( But it's a lab, and my bf is my partner, and I already told him we were going to be speedy so I could get out and go to the last house. My gamma chi said to go ahead and go to the first house, even if it is only for a few minutes, so at least I get to do something rush related on Thursday. Besides rank, of course!

I'm so excited! My gamma chi's for my floor are holding a "wardrobe selection" meeting tomorrow so I'm not really that nervous about it!

Expect the story from first round on Friday!

Good luck, HTC! Wow, these recruitment threads are addictive! :)

jwsteele 09-23-2007 11:05 PM

I'm not necessarily saying that you should skip class, but I know a girl who went through rush at UC Berkeley (which is insanely less competitive) who got dropped by the houses she missed on a round because she wasn't present for a very legit reason. I don't know if it was actually her personality but it was a little coincidental...but I'm just saying...at a really competitive school it might be wise to take the tiiiiny percentage of the grade.

KSUViolet06 09-23-2007 11:56 PM

From the Ole Miss Panhellenic recruitment rules:

8. Potential New Members should attend all academic classes, lab, and study groups. A POTENTIAL NEW MEMBER MAY NOT MISS AN ACADEMIC CLASS OR LAB FOR THE PURPOSE OF ATTENDING A RECRUITMENT-RELATED FUNCTION. IF SHE DOES, SHE WILL BE RELEASED FROM FORMAL RECRUITMENT AND BE INELIGABLE TO SIGN A BID CARD UNTIL THE FOLLOWING SEMESETER. If there is a conflict between Recruitment activities and academic requirements, the Potential New Member should contact the Panhellenic Council so that an excuse may be sent to the sororities.

How ironic that a paragraph instructing PNMs to go to class would contain such errors.

As a former Berkeley advisor, I can tell you their system is (or at least was a couple of years ago) that after the first day we had free invites to anyone who missed that day (and we got to see their excuses). From the second day on, if we wanted to invite someone back who was absent, that girl counted in our max number of girls to invite back. So, unless we really loved the girl from Day 1 or knew her before recruitment, it was really hard to give invites to girls who were absent over girls we had a second chance to meet.

Hope that makes sense. I'm not sure if other schools handle it the same way.

SthrnZeta 09-24-2007 04:00 PM

Yay, a new R thread! Love the nicknames!

I like the free invites after the first round policy, but counting them after the first round. That makes sense. It's not that a chapter cuts you because you missed a round, it's more that you have less of a chance to impress them and make them want to keep you. Let's face it, it's not fair to be automatically cut for missing a round, but it is not fair to the other PNMs for you to be automatically invited back because you missed a round.

I had a PNM in my group who missed round 3. She had a full schedule of six chapters with high retention rates (i.e. PHA forces them to cut more women per release figures). She would have fit well in any of them IMO. Pref comes around and she was cut from 5 of the 6 chapters that she would have attended round 3 parties. I was really nervous about giving her the schedule, worried that she'd be upset. Fortunately, it was her favorite, and the chapter obviously felt the same way about her, since she got a bid there! I'm sure she would have had a full schedule for pref if she had attended round 3, but the end result would have been the same.

SthrnZeta 09-24-2007 04:27 PM

I want to say my chapter had some rule about missing certain rounds affecting your chances of getting a bid... not sure exactly but I remember it being pretty specific. Also, I agree with you, Violet, it's unfair to automatically give invites back to girls who missed rounds when those slots could go to girls you actually had time with.

OleMissGlitter 09-24-2007 05:25 PM

The Gamma Chi's (Rush Counselors) will give a list to each house of PNMs who will not be at a round because of class. Most houses aren't going to hold that against a PNM if she is in class. If her name is not on the list that's another story...so advice to PNMs tell your Gamma Chi's if you have class!

ETA: With the new release figures being used I guess a girl who couldn't make it to a house because of class....so I guess this is another reason why recs are important and making sure you know some active members in each house.

hottytoddychick 09-24-2007 11:52 PM

KSU is absolutely right! If we miss class because of a recruitment activity, we are automatically cut from recruitment, no questions asked. I did ask my lab teacher if I could switch to Tuesday, but I don't think she has a good attitude about Greek Life, and was very clear about how anything Greek related isn't a good enough excuse. So, I'm stuck in class. I did fill out an absentee form, and I just hope that the two or three houses I'm missing don't cut me just because I wasn't there, but if they do, I probably don't want to be there anyhow. I don't know. What happens, happens.

I met with my gamma chi's tonight and they looked at all my dresses and helped me pick. My roomie and I had already sort of decided, but I needed another opinion, and they picked the two we picked, so I am beyond ecstatic. Wednesday needs to hurry up and get here!

I'll keep y'all updated as best I can!

Afterthought- in addition to not being allowed to miss class, if we get caught with our cell phones during any recruitment activity, it's supposed to be confiscated until after bids are handed out.

violetpretty 09-25-2007 12:12 AM

HTC, how many parties are there for round 2 and how many can you see each day?

hottytoddychick 09-25-2007 12:27 AM

You can attend a maximum of 6 houses for round 2, which is Skit Round, and lasts one day. Round 3 is Pref Round; you can attend up to three parties and it is also a one day round. Round 1 (Philanthropy) is two days, and there are ten groups of girls. Some are going through with a 5/4 split, and some have a 6/3 split. There is a "break" house on either the five house day or the three house day, so everyone winds up with a 6/4 split with the break included. At least, that what I pieced together from everything we were told yesterday.

Oh silly me, I was thinking that philanthropy was round 2. Is there any way you could request to have a 6/3 split and have a party for the first party so you can at least go for 20 minutes (ie have your break at party 8, 9 or 10)? That way you'd only miss 2 parties.

I know that a girl in my Rho Gamma buddy's group had her schedule adjusted for class. She got 4 invites for round 2 (10 parties, 5 each night), but she couldn't be there on the first night, so PHA just moved all of her parties to the second night.

hottytoddychick 09-25-2007 08:31 AM

I don't think so. I think I'm only missing two anyhow. I want to say the rounds are about 30 minutes for Philanthropy, so I'm crossing my fingers that lab isn't too long. I just remembered I have a practical that day. And they are making us do an actual lab. I will probably just miss all of Thursday. I really hope not though. My new gamma chi's (not floor, but recruitment group) said to just pop in the first house, even if it is for only ten minutes, so I'll make it to one, guaranteed.
